Bunker Troubles
Public course so lots of footprints some many days old leaving you with shots in heal marks. Bunkers also need to be refurbish with more sand as most only have about 1/2" then hard underneath. We knew the greens were just aerated, top-dressed and fertilized so putting was a challenge.
Still one of the best course around!
Pro Shop is rude
Show up half hour early for our 7am tee time, no one there to open the facilities, restaurant staff locked out as well. Billy from the pro shop shows up at 6:55 to open up. We walk in and he said he wasn't going to honor our tee time through golfnow.com because they always mess up and he has a shot gun start at 7:30 and a outing at noon. I asked why would you allow us to book it online if you knew we weren't going to able to play. He proceeds to yell at us and tells us to take it up with golfnow and to get out of his club house. Needless to say we didn't stay because Billy is such a class act. Ended up playing a course down the road. Save your money and play The Ledges instead.
Called Golfnow when I got home they completely handled the situation and provided me with a refund of my booking fee,
Excellent Course
The only negative is there is no "normal" tees at 6000-6200 yards it's either 6700 (whites) of 5400 golds. Forget the blues unless you're a big hitter. This is still one of my favorites no matter the length.
First golf course review
Westover,
We golf at your course probably 5-6 times a year. This week the greens were in terrible shape on almost every hole. If we compared to Franconia or vets those places are in much better shape, a round is less money and 5 minutes from home.
We called on the 9th hole to order food and nobody answered so I called again, same thing. We stopped in to get food and was told we didn't hear the phone ring. You guys lost a few bucks there as only two people ordered food, we didn't have time to wait for something to be cooked other than a hot dog. No smile behind the bar either.
Wanted to leave some feedback for you guys not a complaint, there's a ton of competition these days as you know. Also saw some denim on the course, kind of surprised by that.
Unfortunately we probably won't be coming back, thanks for your time.
Always one of the best courses around Western Mass including private courses. The only negative is the white tees are to long for most average golfers while the golds are to short. There should be a set of tees in the 6000 yard range.
Good course worth the ride.
This course is fairly flat, generous fairways, in great shape. It is located next to the airforce base, so expect to see lots of aircraft flying low overhead, great view and sound., holes 11, 12, 13 are best for the aircraft. The pace was a bit slow for us, we had several groups ahead, the greens are very nice. I would play again, for me it is worth the drive to get there.
Long with punishing rough
Westover has a couple very long par 4's and a few par 5's, so long hitters have some advantages. The rough could use a medium cut to transition from fairway to long rough. If you're off the fairway, you're hitting a flyer or chunk every time. It's always busy but efficient at getting you on the course. Beverage cart is great. Staff is good, conditions are good. Great course to walk as it is basically two plateaus so no up/down.
Course conditions
The course is in excellent condition . Greens are the best I have seen them can't wait to play there again
course is long and awesome
this course is user friendly for average golfers as well as advanced golfers. it is a long course, but flat, so it is good for walkers also.
loved our day here.
VERY good golf course...
This course has back tees that will challenge the best golfers and closer tees so everyone can enjoy. This is a true golf course - no rinky dink holes. Conditions are always good and the greens are immaculate for a public course with alot of play.
Great course for $25
If you're from the Boston area and getting sick of the muni scene within I-95, I'd recommend making a trip out here to check out Westover. The course was entertaining without being difficult. Lots of approachable greens, and the greens were in good shape. Front 9 was pretty slow, but we moved along nicely at the back 9 (I think a good number of people only play 9 here).
Where's the teeth?
This is a course with the potential of being one of the best tests of golf in the area. Unfortunately, little effort has been put into it, other than routine maintenance. What work has been done, has been primarily to emphasize pace of play. This includes removal of several strategically placed fairway bunkers on holes 7 and 14. What bunkers remain could use work including adding sand. The good news is staff is always friendly and helpful and the prices are comparable, if not slightly lower than other munis in the area. We will continue to play here, while knowing that the course's glory days are behind it.
A Must Play
All around fantastic shape. Greens, fairways and bunkers. Great staff, very accommodating.
Same goes for the bar and restaurant staff.
