The Schuss Mountain at Shanty Creek

About
In the colder months, Shanty Creek is a winter wonderland complete with more than 50 ski runs, but in the summer it offers 72 holes of championship golf. Shanty Creek's four golf courses are all distinct. The Schuss Mountain Course was ranked as one of the top public courses in the state. The layout offers a two-in-one package with a front nine that is mostly flat and a back nine that features dramatic elevation changes. The fairways are generous but bordered by dense forests. The layout also features abundant wetlands that come into play. The greens are lightning fast and there are many that are open in front, allowing easier approaches. It is no wonder this scenic and challenging course is one of northern Michigan's most popular golf courses.

what a treat!
The course layout is challenging, many elevation changes, yet fair. Greens are difficult, very moundy, hard to read, quick, but rewarding. Can't say enough wonderful things about the staff. Our only problem was that on the back nine, it appeared a foursome started on 10, old coots, didn't much care if they held anybody up, apparently thought they owned the course themselves. This is our second time playing this course and loved it twice as much as we did the first time. Would highly recommend to golfers of every type. Look forward to playing it again next summer on vacation.
Average layout, but near perfect condition
Played here because we didn't want a crowded, difficult course for my wife to play. We were scheduled to be paired with two others, but the very nice starter got us off by ourselves, and we were able to play through two other groups.
First off, the day was perfect, and the course in near perfect conditions.....smooth, fast greens, perfect fairways, raked bunkers.
For guys, it is difficult to pick a tee to play. The white tees are over 6,500 yards, which is long for most players, while the silver tees are only 5,600. I picked the silver, and on the front nine it was difficult to pick a club and line off the tee.......dog legs at 160-200 yards, worry about hitting it too far, but could not see what was around the corner in most cases.....and then after hitting less than driver, you had a 150+ second shot. Front was tight and kind of confining, and flat. Back nice opened up a bit, and was more playable...more hills, prettier and more fun.
Overall an ok resort course for couples.
Course has maintained grass
If you can't hit a draw, I would not recommend this course. A lot of dog leg lefts! Overall gorgeous course!
Saturday afternoon
Course was in very good condition. Round went smoothly and it was a beautiful day at Shanty Creek!
Golf Outing
It rained hard the day before our tee time, but course was in great shape. Course wad booked heavy but pace was good.
Fun to play
Great shape and offers varying levels of difficulty!
OFF-Season play was perfect
Nothing fancy here, you get what you see. The front 9 moves along the gently rolling terrain with no real significant elevation changes. Alot of doglegs, nestled between the Michigan hardwoods and pines.
The Back 9 really speeds up with a short par 4 and then much more seclusion to follow with scenic lookouts and drastic elevation change. For the month of May conditions were excellent. Fairways were mighty green and the greens were luscious, as if it were July. If you want a more challenging layout, head over to The Legend or Cedar River, but this course will definitely make you feel good.
Very Nice Course in Beautiful Condition
Our first time playing the course and it was in beautiful condition. Challenging but fair course with pleasant wooded views everywhere. Pace of play was slow because of a group of an outing four foursomes in front of us.
Schuss is the beginning not the end
Very nice Shanty resort course to start your outing. Playable but pay attention to the tee boxes. There is a big difference. Make sure egos do not get in the way when choosing. Some challenging holes mixed with some very good scoring holes. Conditions were excellent for June.
Pace of play was impacted by a slow group but the ranger had them leave the course! That was a winner for us. I would recommend this as your first course to play ahead of Cedar River and Legend if you play multiple days.
Nice Course
This is a really nice golf course. The fairways are kept up beautifully. The greens are large and well manicured. It was fun golfing here. The trees were just starting to turn for fall and it was quite cool and breezy, but we enjoyed it none-the-less.
Nice Course - A little long from the whites
Greens were fair and in good condition. Fairways and tee boxes were fine. 6,300 yards from the whites is a little long for us seniors -- need another tee box, maybe golds -- 5,800 to 6,000 yards.
Great Course, slow pace of play
Great course, but pace of play was too slow on this particular day, causing us to quit our round.
GREAT COURSE
THE COURSE HAD SOME GREAT HOLES THE SCENIC VIEWS FUN TO PLAY
Very good layout with premium on accuracu
A fun challenging golf course where you can use all the clubs in your bag. Greens in fair condition. Wide variety in tolo
Best value in michigan
$29 everyday after 1pm the green speed is a good warmup for the legend, the sand is pure and the fairways are better then the legend. What a steal of a deal best course around
Deceptive length, outstanding greens...
Fairly "Driver" friendly, with many lengthy second shots. Water was not an issue on more than two or three holes. Ample bunkers. Greens were awesome! Long course, with a many options...
Very nice course
I really liked this course, it was a great price for how nice it is. The only thing I didn't like is I barely got to use my driver, it has alot of dog legs or spots to layup. It has a lot of really nice holes though. Overall I will probably play this course every time I go up north.
