Sugar Creek Golf Course
About
Sugar Creek Golf Course offers some of the best scenery of any course in the St. Louis area. Golfers can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from the course's elevated tees. The course opened in 1990 with several improvements made in the following years. The layout is a manageable length at just under 6,100 yards. It is player-friendly enough for beginners to approach with confidence but there are also challenges in store for more advanced players. Water only comes into play on one hole but there are stands of trees lining the narrow fairways. The golf course will generously reward accuracy and good strategy though it is not overly punishing if you are slightly errant. In addition to the course, Sugar Creek G.C. also boasts an expansive practice range with 35 hitting stations.

not sure how to make slide rule work
Course had a lot of construction on it. The greens were in better shape than early in 2012.
Good value for January
Given a lot of rain the day before and temps in the upper 60's with some wind, the course was in decent shape for mid January in St Louis. Course was a little squishy in places, but no visible standing water. Some construction along the side of the first two holes but after that, clear sailing. A great deal for $10!
great December day
The course was as you might expect in December.. It is very sloping with not many flat lies. Greens are challenging with cups set in difficult placements (again due to the contours of the geography). I played with 3 members who were hospitable and helpful. Would have been a different round without local knowledge
Great Fun at Sugar Creek
I went there to play the day before Thanksgiving and found a very nice course with great staff. Lot of fun before Thanksgiving.
Great Elevation Changes
All in all we had a good time. There are some really great elevation changes on this course. The greens were in pretty good shape for Nov. (except for the 18th, it really needs work)
Had a great afternoon
I'm not the greatest golfer and still had a great time , we did not have to rush
Great elevation changes
For a shorter course (6100 from the back), it is pretty challenging. Lots of dog-legs and a few blind tee shots. Also very impressive elevation changes and slopes in fairway. Many places to loose a ball so hit it straight. Most of the greens were very very good. Pretty quick pace and firm. There are a few on the back that are much softer and slower, but overall, above average pace and roll.
Greens are in really good shape for this time of year but the golf carts aren't. I had two break down on me on the course!
The par 3's are interesting. Huge cliff down on one hole and a big hill up to a blind one. Another 3 has water in front of it. For the most part, you have to hit off the tee pretty firm and straight. Greens are challenging but fair.
Fun coursre to play some straight fairways and some doglegs as well, as well as a few hills to play.
It starts out as a straight course and the incorporates some challenging shots as you go on. Fairways were in good shape, as were the greens except the 17 &18 greens could have used some work. Otherwise it was an enjoyable day.
This course needs a lot of work
There is a lot of things on the course undone. Steps are unrepaired on some holes as they are a danger to golfers walking up and down them. Fairways are hard as concrete. A lot of the greens have a lot of crab grass and water grass in them unattended too. And lets not mention the absolute horrid 18th hole green which has not been fixed in 10 years, if you can even call that a green. Not justifiable to charge those rates.
Needs Maintenance, but not too too bad.
At this point in the season, my expectations are low as far as course maintenance after the dry summer that we've had. This is the same across the board. But honestly, Sugar Creek was a huge dissapointment for me. We booked it knowing full well that for $30 on a weekend morning, you have to have tapered expectations. We went in knowing that it may be a bit of a dog track... and it was.
The layout isn't too bad. It's short and not terribly challenging, but that means that if you are going for speed (we wanted to be done in time to watch football), this is a good course for you. There are a couple of par 4's that are reachable if you hit the ball pretty far.
The good:
-It's a quick play
-Cheap
-On the MO side of the river (no bridge traffic)
The Bad:
-Groundkeeping staff was overly obnoxious and didn't try to make themselves scarce like normal grounds crews do.
-course condition was not the best
The Ugly:
-Tee Boxes and greens were a travesty
-Our cart was also janky, it only turned one direction.
Basically, if you want to go play 18 and are concerned mostly about saving money and getting done quickly, this is a good course to play. If you're looking for a place to go have a morning or afternoon of good golf on a pristine course, look elsewhere, but expect to pay for it.
I definitely WILL play there again, but maybe not this season.
overall a pretty good experience
The course itself was in pretty good condition. I went towards the end of summer, and we all know how hot it was in the summer this year. The tee boxes, fairways, and roughs were plush, the only problem were the greens. I understand that greens had to be very difficult to maintain in the scorching heat over a two month period. Other than that, I truly enjoyed the course.
The biggest downfall that I have with this course is its lack of consistent distance markers. Also, tee box distances on par-3's seemed iffy as well. When I hit a ball down the center of the fairway on a par-4 or par-5, I want to know exactly my distance to the green. This could be done by placing blue, white, and then red stakes in the middle of the fairway. Some holes had stakes, some holes did not. Some had markings on the cart paths, others did not. Thus, it was very difficult to get a proper club selection without proper distance markers.
To be honest, the course was nice and price was right, but until I am told that they have consistent distance markers out there, I probably will not go back.
Thanks for reading and go low.
Course has some easy and difficult holes. Well balanced.
The course is well balanced between difficult and less difficult holes. Some holes are flat and some are quite hilly, which breaks it up nicely. Number eight is difficult to know if the group in front has moved ahead enough to tee off. Number 16, 17 & 18 are good finishing holes (challenging to keep it in play). The heat of this summer took its toll on hole 17 and 18 green but the grounds crew is already bringing them back. Should be in fine shape for 2013.
