Golf Advisor: Top 25 Courses for Pace of Play in the U.S. (2025 #20)

Cattails GC is a good track for the money!
Course was in great shape, pace of play excellent on the front 9, and painfully slow on the back 9.
The pin placements were brutal the day we played, they added 10 strokes to my score, lol!
All in all, a good time.
Tough
Very tough course. Hole 1 should be a par 4 instead of a 360 yard par 5 from the white tees.
nice day for 18
course was in good shape, challenging pin placements with lots of sloping greens
Great Track, Slow Dry Play
We've played here many times before, and Cattails remains one of the areas most scenic courses. It is in great condition, and the greens were pretty fast as usual. This layout makes you think!
Two downsides to Cattails. One is that the difficulty tends to create slow play, and on the weekend day we played most recently not a ranger was in sight. A fivesome was observed ahead of us, and the back nine was a slog.
The second nit is an old one. I know they discontinued the water coolers some time ago, but it still seems cheap. Especially when we only saw the cart girl once, from a distance, on a Saturday afternoon. Bring your own beverages
Ok course, poor management
Prior to tee off, we specifically asked the course manager if there were any events that day since we had a beginner in our group and we were going to play a little slower than normal. He said there wasn't anything going on that day, so we played the front nine (while letting other groups play through) and stopped for lunch in the clubhouse instead of just grabbing it and continuing. We spent a good amount of money on drinks in the bar (8 beers and 4 shots plus food), then bought $60 worth of beer for the back nine. Before we could start the back nine, the front desk told us there is a golf league that night (apparently there are leagues every night of the week) and they told us we couldn't resume for another 2 hours, or they would write us vouchers for 9 holes. The fairways and tee boxes were good, the greens were only ok, the staff were apologetic but uninformed, and the course manager blatantly lied to us and was apparently unaware about leagues that happen every weeknight at his course. I will never be returning to this course.
First Time
This was our first time at Cattails, we certainly were not sure what to expect. The greens, fairways and tee boxes were will taken care of. The cart paths are slightly confusing but can be navigated. Certainly would return for another round!
Slow Play!
Was disappointed with the pace of play and helpfulness of the staff. We were put behind a 5-some that was extremely slow. At one point, i could see the group in front of them clearing the next green while they were putting on the prior green. I could count 5 groups (we were the first) behind them waiting. We finally found a ranger (only saw 1 out there the entire day) that we flagged down and said something. He indicated he told them they had to split up on the 8th hole. They didn't. When we made the turn I said something to the pro shop. His comment was "they are not playing slow." My jaw dropped and i told him that there were 5 groups behind them. He told me that we should pair up with someone to slow us down. They were "members" so they didn't want to make them mad. It was ridiculous. We had to tell the group to split up and the back 9 went much faster. Never saw another ranger on the course the rest of the day. Too bad too, since this was a very nice course but i wouldn't go back just because of the staff's indifference.
Diasappointing Pace and Service
We were extremely disappointed playing on Sunday February 19th at Cattails Golf Course. After 1.5hr and 4 holes in we called it a day. The club did not want to give us a rain check as they said they don't do that on busy days. Unfortunately they don't have a Ranger out there either on busy days to ensure a proper pace. Very disappointing answer too. The flights in front of us ( and not only one) were playing multiple balls and no one cared. Don't plan to play there again.
Great first round of year
Can't ask for much when it's still February! Packed day so we were late to tee off despite being there early. The fairways and rough weren't too mucky/wet but a few sand traps had remnants of water from the off season. Greens are still in process of aerotation but they are a playable two putt. Regardless of course conditions and pace of play off tee box, we still had a good time and enjoyed playing this tough course.
Nice course and layout...overbooked and slow
Must be an area gathering place...I was impressed with layout and conditions, minus the unfixed ball marks. A challenging and beautiful course that brought out all clubs. Had to play back 9 twice because they allowed the others in my time slot to tee off without me despite being on time (they let them out early) so I paid the price
For staff letting them go early. I was suppose to Golf front but when making turn they had 5 groups waiting...poorly managed! Won't tolerate as time is precious! So I was disappointed and may not visit again given options available elsewhere and management not making right what they wronged.
November 27 Golf - Course Looks Great
For the end of November, in Michigan, the course was in great shape. Very impressed.
Entrance Road Is Awful!
First time at Cattails. I liked the layout and condition of course. We played on a day where it rained the whole time so it was mandatory cart paths. Big negative was the very poor (third world) condition of dirt road the last half mile to the course entrance. As much as I liked the course I will not come back to play again until road improvements are done. I'm not screwing up my tires, wheels and suspension for a round of golf. If you must go...drive your off-road vehicle.
GOOD ROUND OF GOLF ON A HOT HUMID DAY
WE PLAYED 18 ON A BEAUTIFUL COURSE. ON PROBLEM WAS THAT THERE WAS NO WATER ON COURSE. WE DID GET WATER AT THE TURN. HOLE 10 IS EXTREMELY CHALLENGING.. LOVED THE COURSE.
Thank you so much! We appreciate you playing with us and hope to see you again soon!
