Mattawang Golf Club
About
Mattawang Golf Club has changed very little since it first opened in 1960. The traditional layout has withstood the test of time as a challenging but playable layout. The course was designed to blend seamlessly into the natural setting while still testing your shot-making skills. You won’t find any man-made water hazards or artificial mounding on this golf course, instead you’ll be challenged by natural streams and ponds and mature evergreens. At first glance, the layout is seemingly wide open, but don’t let your guard down because the fairways are actually quite tight and many of them are strategically lined with trees. In keeping with the time it was built, the greens are smaller than those you would find on most modern golf courses and heavily protected by sand traps. Over the years, Mattawang Golf Club has built a reputation for having some of the well maintained putting surfaces in the area.

Always in really good shape
Course is always in really good shape. Most times the pace of play is good, yesterday was bad. No ranger on the course to keep things moving and there was a super slow 4some. My past experiences though have been great. Just one of those days....
Dano, glad to see you are back for another season. I know you enjoy fast rounds but there was a ranger on the course Wednesday. The golf course was playing difficult and the ranger was focusing on those that needed more attention then the quicker players.
Terrible Fairways
Fairways are in terrible shape. Most you can’t find a grass spot to place your ball. Greens are ok but clearly haven’t been cut yet.
Peter, sorry to see your unhappiness after all the rounds you have played here.
We were under water restrictions the end of last summer and could only water Greens and Tees. At this point we can only wait until Mother Nature warms to grow all the seeding that was done over the fall.
An fyi - the greens have been cut and rolled since the March 24 and 90% of our golfers have commented on how exceptional they are rolling for the first week of April.
Mattawang needs some work….
Many tee boxes are under repair. Many fairways are under repair too, and the ones that aren’t under repair, need to be. Hard to find a decent lie on the entire course. I realize it’s March, but this course isn’t going to be much better once it warms up. 60 for this course is highway robbery. Neshanic is 60 and it’s playing great right now. So are the rest of the county courses in Somerset county. Will not be coming back.
Thank you for playing Mattawang this winter. We are glad to see you enjoyed your round.
Early season conditions
Course has some tee boxes under repair and some of the fairways were patchy but that’s typical this early in the year. By April I expect the course to be where it normally is
Thanks Dan, glad to see you got in some golf in February. We have a new tee coming on #11 and we did a lot of fairway repair heading into the winter. So we are hoping for a nice grow in season coming this Spring.
Enjoy the coming season!
Thanks for playing some Thanksgiving Weekend Golf with us! Glad to see you enjoyed the round.
Not worth the money
For what you can get at other courses in the area, including food, drinks and purely just way better conditions, I believe it’s way overpriced..
Thank you for joining us for a nice day of fall golf. Glad to see you enjoyed the round.
We appreciate you playing Mattawang for some fall weekend golf and taking the time to leave a review.

Too expensive
This course is a nice course (early in the season) but what we saw today was pretty bad. Fairways in really rough shape and the rough was so deep your gall is gone forever if you don’t keep it on the fairway. Pace of play was very slow due to a frost delay that morning. Still allowed walkers. As a way to “catch up” they could’ve given everybody a cart but there were still a ton of walkers. Bunkers were in great shape. No bev cart or hot food here either. Not a lot of amenities for the $79 price they get.
Padamo, sorry to see some of your comments. Hope you will come back for another try.
Just a fyi, we have found over many years that walkers average 16 minutes a round faster then cart riders. Sometimes things are what they seem.
Glad to see you enjoyed a nice day, thanks for taking the time to leave a review.
Fun Friday morning.
The course was in great condition. The greens were if top shape, well maintained and true rolling. The pace of play was great, 18 in 3.5 hrs. There were not many player's in the morning but we took our time playing. Great course. Will be back.
We appreciate you making the trip from the Jersey Shore! Hope to see you again soon!
Easy Tee Times, fairways damaged
My friends and I play here because we can usually get a tee time for our preferred time. Course has extensive damage due to drought in NJ over the summer. Some of the fairways are in terrible shape. No one to blame, but it is an issue. I like the layout and the greens were very good; receptive and rolling very nicely. Pace was excellent, we clocked in right at 4 hrs. I saw a ranger who informed us we were on pace but to be mindful of the group behind us. We had fallen a bit behind the group in from of us but caught back up. This was my first time interacting with a ranger on this course and I appreciate the effort to keep things moving. I think this course is pricey compared to alternatives in the area, such as Heron Glen which is vastly superior in every aspect for about the same price. Although Mattawang does allow walkers and Heron forces you to pay for a cart on weekends. I'll be back and hopefully the conditions will improve.
Hank, thanks for taking the time to leave such a thorough review. I see you already booked again for this coming Sunday, we appreciate your support while we battle back from the tough summer.
