Flanders Valley Golf Club - White/Blue Course
About
Flanders Valley Golf Course has received praise as not only one of the best public golf courses in New Jersey, but also as one of the best in the U.S. Flanders offers two 18-hole championship courses, White-to-Blue and Red-to-Gold. The courses are spread across over 400 acres of Morris County's idyllic countryside. The White-to-Blue Course has a more traditional layout that sprawls across mostly flat terrain. The golf course may lack elevation changes but there are an abundance of mature trees to contend with on either side of the course, making it very tight in some spots. One of the most memorable holes is the par-4 14th, nicknamed "Top and Right." This slight dogleg left hole has a pond bordering the entire left side of the fairway.

Drizzling but a great day
We played the gold/red in mild rain as a twosome on individual carts in 3 hours. The course was in excellent condition!
Enjoyed the course. Very challenging. Nice layout. Would definitely play here again would love to try the other 2 nines at the course. Played gold to red.
Great track - Challenging greens
Not too much trouble as long as you keep in the fairway. Not many flat putts to be had! Course was in great condition .
Good course
I played for the first time
Good layout and very clean course
Challenging reasonably
Course in good shape. Due to covid 19 concerns, walking only allowed and no flags on greens. So we just aimed for center of green and found cup when we got there. Glad courses are still open.

Excellent Layout - Could be Even Better
I've been coming to Flanders Valley since 1979. Back then it was on the list of Golf Digest's Top 100 Public Golf Courses in the country. Over the years conditions began to decline and 6 or 7 years ago maintenance was so bad the grass on many fairways just died. How that could happen is a mystery but in any case the county then saw the light and Billy Casper Golf took over management of the course at which point things slowly began to improve. Conditions are not as good as they were 30 years ago but given the amount of play the two 18 hole courses get, things could be a lot worse too. The course has been dumbed down a bit. Fairways are wide and the rough has been cut back. They want to increase the pace of play so many trees have been cut down, ostensibly to give the greens more air but still the place is wide open and you really have to hit a lousy shot to lose your ball. Despite efforts to speed things up, an average round is still 4:20 on a good day.
The layout itself, designed originally by Rees Jones, is pretty good and you'll find yourself, after completing 18 holes, having used just about every club in your bag, which is something that can't be said for a lot of golf courses. Each 18 hole course, consists of a tough hilly front nine and a relatively flat and easier back nine. There are a wide variety of holes, some where you really need to have a good long game and others that are more strategic and need some thought to play well. Greens are large, not too undulating or too fast and mostly smooth and in good condition although last year a couple got some kind of disease, I think from too much rain, and had to be reseeded. It's not an easy course by any means even though the fairways have been widened over the years. Some of the bunkers need new sand and it appears, or at least we're hoping, that there is some kind of rolling schedule where a certain number of them get reworked each season.
The clubhouse sucks. Bathrooms/showers are horrid. You're better off peeing in the woods. There is a nice outdoor Tiki Bar though with a barbecue for hotdogs and burgers and you can get a cold beer so at the end of a round on a warm day it's rather nice to sit under an umbrella and relax.
Thank you so much for your detailed review. We greatly appreciate your comments and take everything seriously. We hope you join us again soon!
Good time
Wound up finding a tee time after getting cancelled by another course. The weather was ideal. It was a nice sunny day with very little wind. For this time of year it did seam perfect. The course was in good shape with the fairways and greens rolling alright. I've played here a number of times and usually enjoyed the course. With the weather, they did switch us up playing red and white with blue used to pick up any overflow to try and keep things moving and gold was closed. Removing the trees around the course has helped it dry out quicker so that was a good thing. The deal prices from the golf booking sites make it a worthwhile play. Just make sure the cart is included as flanders tends to be one of the few that offers a lot of walking prices.

What happened to this place
Used to be worth the 30 minute drive. Why has it gone downhill ?
It’s not horrible but nowhere near as good. Not maintained the same way. Not worth going out of your way to play it.

Tricky course
The greens were in a great condition. Some of the pin placements were really tough, I saw balls rolling back after missing a cup. May want to add more sand to the bunkers. I’m ok with it as I know how the hit on thin sand but some people were frustrated. Overall, well maintained tricky course that I would be happy to go back.
Thanks for your 4 star review. We're glad that you enjoyed your first round out with us and hope to see you back again soon.
