Flanders Valley Golf Club - White/Blue Course
About
Flanders Valley Golf Course has received praise as not only one of the best public golf courses in New Jersey, but also as one of the best in the U.S. Flanders offers two 18-hole championship courses, White-to-Blue and Red-to-Gold. The courses are spread across over 400 acres of Morris County's idyllic countryside. The White-to-Blue Course has a more traditional layout that sprawls across mostly flat terrain. The golf course may lack elevation changes but there are an abundance of mature trees to contend with on either side of the course, making it very tight in some spots. One of the most memorable holes is the par-4 14th, nicknamed "Top and Right." This slight dogleg left hole has a pond bordering the entire left side of the fairway.

Ahh good old Flanders
Grew up close to here and played my high school golf matches here. Since joining a golf club and moving to Madison I don't get here as often and I actually live closer to both union county courses (Ash Brook and Galloping Hill). However, I have still probably played about 15 rounds since mid-summer. This is a review of current conditions in December. Got out sunday and walked the first 18 (since only White/Red were open) in three hours and 15 minutes. The course was empty in the morning and it was beautiful. Had a two-some two holes ahead of me and no one behind me. Since the greens don't get as beat up as they are in the summer, and they healed from aeration. They are quick, even after we got soaked with rain for two days. Course is going to stay open until they are completely logged with snow, even opening up after the thanksgiving snowstorm after a few days. Go play now, I also got out a second round for $20 for replay, and that was done in 3 hours and 15 minutes. Arrived at Flanders at 9 and was done at 3:30! best rounds of the year for me scorewise, 90 and 93.
Good municipal course
This golf course remains equal to itself over the years. Well managed but certainly not sterling in terms of course conditions: poorly mowed fairways, wet areas and torn up tee boxes. Lack of ranger to assure steady acceptable pace of play. Greens were in good condition.
course maintenance not good
fairways and roughs were in bad condition, and some of the greens were full of leaves and seeds making it impossible to putt.
Great Track that has gone down hill
Great layout but conditions have slid dramatically from where they were 20 to 30 years ago.
Still a good value for Morris County residents but not for non residents especially with cart that you need on the hilly Gold nine. The Blue/White is a nice walk.
No discernible improvement with Billy Casper Mgt takeover from County this spring.
Frustrating Pace of Play
I played Red/Gold on consecutive days Labor Day weekend, going out as a single both days. Due to lack of rain over the past couple weeks, the grounds, from tees to greens, are very fast, meaning you need one less club everywhere. Overall, these are two good nines, best played from the tips (blues) both because of the hard ground and because it's fairly short.
The staff in the clubhouse was very friendly, a departure from the Flanders I remember from years ago. The greatest drawback, and it IS a drawback, is the pace of play. It was a 4:40 round the first day, and just around 5:00 yesterday, with waits at many tee boxes. They need rangers who will speed things along, because that pace makes what should be a great round very frustrating.
I'll give it another shot, but if the experience is the same, it's back to Neshanic or another muni where they take pace of play more seriously.
Good day of golf
The red 9 holes are flat and fairly easy. The gold is like a different course with hills and sharp dog legs. My only complaint was when I asked in the golf shop how walkable the red gold was he said no problem. That was true for the red and totally wrong for the gold. The facility is simple but functional. This is all about the golf. The greens were huge and good share. The tees boxes were worn and hard to find decent grass. Some parts of the fairway were burned but it really didn't affect play. Definitely would return. Friendly and professional staff.
Nice course, nice people
Above average county golf course. excellent greens and fairways. tee boxes a little chewed up but not bad for late August.
Nice Job
The staff at the course is extremely friendly, the condition were excellent, the course is very well maintained, within the boundaries of the fairway.
Well worth the money.
Flanders Red to Gold
While the Re to Gold is not my favorite combination at Flanders I have to say the course itself was in excellent condition. I have to give a nod to the Caser folks as the course looked and played beautifully. Certainly worth the money. Red course is wide open with only a couple of really challenging holes. The gold smacks you from the first hole, a tough par 5 up a hill that would challenge any bunny slope a ski resort to a small sloped green. The second hole begins your trek into the woods and it gets tighter from there.
Ok course but extremely slow round
5 plus hours on a Saturday at 12. Rangers could so a better job enforcing pace of play. Good price for residents ($59). Would consider it too pricey for a nonresident (approx. $85 w cart).
Very walkable so cart is not a must have.
Two Different Nines-Long from white tees
The two nines on the red-gold course are very different. The red course is mostly long and straight and is pretty wide open with limited places to get in trouble. The gold course is very mixed, lots of elevation changes and lots of OB with woods on both sides. Greens are in good condition but usually run a little slower than most. I would not recommend walking as it can be very tiring on the gold course. The greens look they break more than they actually do. Very good price if you go after 4, and you can get 18 holes in for a 9 hole rate.
Very good shape
Have played here for a few years. Course has dramatically improved.
Could cost a bit less for a muni course, but overall good value.
I'll be back...
Very nice for the money
We paid $62 per person for a Saturday at 11am. I think this is a very good deal for a Morris County course. It was in very good shape and the round took around 4:15, which on a weekend is not bad. They have 2 18's. There is not a 19th hole unfortunately, but there are several sports bars within a few hours drive after the round.
Great Hot Deal!
Picked up a hot deal and played for $65 total with tax. Saved about $15~ compared to the normal out of county fees and I love this course! Long holes, short holes, and just a great enjoyable experience overall.
Long rounds on holidays and weekends
Course was in good shape, just the pace of play was painfully slow. No one was hurrying the problem groups along. Front nine was over 3 hours teeing off in the very late afternoon!
Slow Day
Pace of play was slow and they were 30 minutes behind on tee times. For those people who wanted to ride I heard they ran out of carts.
I haven't been here in a few years because the conditions were so bad. They've come a VERY long way. Especially the greens. Very solid.
First Timer
Great conditions, greens just aerated but course is very good for a piblic county course. Good bunkers. Fast pace.
Awesome Course I've Played Many Times
A Morris County resident can walk here for $23. A real bargain. As many already know this is the first year under Billy Casper Golf. Casper seems to be putting more money into the course as conditions are better in April than I can ever remember them being. They seem to be having problems from a logistical end though. I have never waited so long in my life to pay for a round of golf. Maybe if you hired people under the age of 106 that would help.
I love the Red and Gold 9 especially. The red is pretty flat and sits low in the valley. 7 is a long par 4 that requires a long straight tee shot and a 200+ yard approach for most players. A great hole. The Gold 9 is my favorite of the four 9s. It snakes its way through the side of a large hill. Trees line just about every fairway. If you can't hit a straight tee shot you will lose golf balls. 13 is a fun hole. A 220 yard tee shot is needed to get to a landing area where the hole turns left at a 90 degree angle. Then its about 300 yards downhill to a well guarded green. The hilliness of the gold 9 makes it a difficult, but not impossible walk.
Super county course, great value
I have played Flanders many times and it is always a great round. It can get crowded on weekends (>4.5hrs) but during the week you can have very little pressure with just under 4 hour rounds and sometimes close to a 3 hour round.
For a county course it is usually in great shape. The greens can be slow so take time on the putting area prior to the round. Morris County has decided to outsource the management and staffing on the 3 remaining Morris County courses for 2014 as the 4th course Berkshire Valley, changed over a few years ago. Hopefully this does not have a negative impact on the experience.
Nicest folks you could ever meet!
Never been to this course before and the people treated me like family. I will definitely come back and I hope that Larry and Joe will be there!
