River Vale Country Club
About
River Vale Country Club (formerly known as Bergen Hills Country Club.) sprawls across the gently rolling hills of northeast New Jersey. It has been ranked on Golf Digest's list of "Best Places to Play," but it still manages to remain one of Bergen County's most well kept secrets. You'll hardly ever run into crowds on this golf course. The layout has a classic design that incorporates a variety of elevation changes. Tricky uphill and downhill lies will be your biggest challenge on this layout. Strategically placed bunkers lurk beside the greensides and there are several holes where water hazards come into play, including the par-5 fifth, which has a lake on either side of the green. River Vale a tight golf course that demands accuracy and while it's not overly formidable, your skills will definitely be put to the test.

Golfer Reviews
River Vale Country Club
I had a very enjoyable round at this golf course. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming from the moment I arrived, which set the tone for a great day. The course conditions were very good overall, with well-maintained fairways and greens that played true.
The layout is enjoyable and offers a nice mix of holes that keep the round interesting and challenging. Pace of play was fair, allowing us to move around the course comfortably without significant delays.
Overall, it’s a well-kept course with a great atmosphere, friendly service, and an enjoyable layout. I would definitely return and recommend it to others looking for a pleasant day of golf.
Best course around
I play here at least twice a week and always in great shape.
solid value w golf now. Lots of hackers tho. Hitting ball
The ball all over the place
Great shape
The course is in great shape considering where we are in the season. Ruff is very long, though, and needs trimming. Going forward, I’d like to see a first and second cut, Almost all holes are second cut only, which makes the course much more difficult and leaves no real margin for error or recovery. If you miss the fairway (or the green off the par e3s), you are toast.
Slightly overrated
I saw some great reviews so I booked the tee time. The course was pretty average. There is nothing wrong but nothing great either. The day before my tee time I tried to call the pro shop to ask some questions. No one answered the phone the entire day nor did anyone answer the following day.
Mixed Review
This is a great course but I was disappointed that we barely got 9 holes done in 2 hours. The group in front of us was not keeping up pace. We replayed a par 5, added someone to our foursome and still caught up to them on the preceding hole. They either had a league and should not have accepted anymore tee times or they need a ranger pushing people to play faster.
Well maintained. Gorgeous and fun course
Came as a solo for an afternoon and got paired with 3 others. Very enjoyable day. Decent pace. Well manicured and maintenance. Good greens. Lots of wildlife and water features. Didn’t lose too many balls!!
Alway good.
Favorite course open to the public in Northern NJ.
Slow
Staff is very nice. That’s rare for public courses especially in NJ. Greens are the best in NJ. Maybe the best in the tristate area. Tee boxes are in really good shape. No issues with the conditions. Very nice.

Big sign saying no outside food or beverages. Is that even legal? Maybe it’s rare but we don’t drink alcohol While playing. I know that’s become a huge part of the game the past 4-5 years with all the newcomers that prioritize booze over skill. I glanced at the healthy food drink options- didn’t see any. “Semi-Private club” that sells low end public course food and beverages not for me. You ban my small cooler and demand I eat and drink nothing for 5+ hours or my only option is for you to sell me gross poison food and beverages ??? I would never drink anything this course sells and I’m not allowed to bring my own? Sorry I don’t drink alcohol while playing nor do I drink Red Bull, Gatorade or soda etc. . I take offense to that.
Just because you have a sign doesn’t mean I’m buying your garbage food and beers. I drink Homemade Icetea with homemade organic lemonade in it, you don’t sell that. I eat hard boiled organic pasture raised naturally foraging chicken eggs that are NON grain or soy fed from a farm in New Jersey. You sell gross hotdogs on trash buns and canola oil chips. No thanks. I’ll pass on your options. And I’ll stick to my own food and drink.

it’s Another slow play 5 hour + day at a public course in NJ. Ranger did nothing to move it along. Fouursome in front of us had at lease 1 hole open in front of them all day. Other courses would have made them skip ahead, that would have perhaps helped bring the round to under 5 hours. So we Missed dinner reservation because of slowwwwwwweew play. That 30-45 mins would have helped.
Would play again but mid week, likely not during summer months though.
They do have a green tee box for players that are absolutely horrible, but playing from there isn’t enforced lol so they play from the blues and whites and cause the same issues as other NJ public courses- errant shots into other fairways and lots of people yelling FOUR!!!!!!! all day.

We were ready at least 10-15 mins early and went out over 10 mins late. Starter and ranger hurt the pace of play. Anything more than 4 hours on a course like this is due to over selling/course congestion and poor time management. for over $100 greens fees not worth it.
Again, mid week non summer is the better time to book here.
