River Vale Country Club

About
River Vale Country Club (formerly known as Bergen Hills Country Club.) sprawls across the gently rolling hills of northeast New Jersey. It has been ranked on Golf Digest's list of "Best Places to Play," but it still manages to remain one of Bergen County's most well kept secrets. You'll hardly ever run into crowds on this golf course. The layout has a classic design that incorporates a variety of elevation changes. Tricky uphill and downhill lies will be your biggest challenge on this layout. Strategically placed bunkers lurk beside the greensides and there are several holes where water hazards come into play, including the par-5 fifth, which has a lake on either side of the green. River Vale a tight golf course that demands accuracy and while it's not overly formidable, your skills will definitely be put to the test.

Good old Rivervale
It is very difficult to get a tee time here and one opened up based on the expected bad weather. We managed to clear the rain after getting drenched on the first hole. I’ve been playing here for 20 years several rounds per year but this was the first in 2024-25. The course was in excellent condition and I’ve never seen the greens and fairways better. The only complaint is that several of the holes run very close together which makes for some errant ball dangers. It’s a forgiving course if you stay in the fairway and good for golfers of all levels. I hope to get back again soon if I can get a tee time by lunch as the morning times are all pre booked. The alternative is Mansion Ridge which is beautiful but very difficult and much more expensive.
We tee’d off early on a beautiful morning and had a good round at River Vale Country Club. The course is in great condition—lush fairways, pristine bunkers, thick rough, and fast greens. Every hole offers a fun and fair challenge with a mix of tight fairways, elevation changes, and well-placed hazards.
The pace of play was decent—minor delays on the back 9 due to the groups ahead of us - it would be good for the club to nudge some groups that are visibly slower and take their time. The carts were standard fare—nothing fancy—but had functional GPS screens that made navigating the course easy and efficient.
River Vale Review
Had an excellent time at River Vale CC.Everything was great. The only negatives is there are a ton of sand traps. Practically surrounding most greens. Unfortunately I was in the sand a lot and noticed that players did not rake after themselves which is not on the course but the players before us. I would definately play here again.
Amazing course/ fun & challenging … nothing bad to say about this place. ..super appealing to the eye…first time but definitely a favorite now…
Great layout
Hard but fair, conditions are good and green complex’s are super fun.
Perfect condition
The course is so well maintained. I love this course. It’s my favorite in Bergen County
Nice course
Course was in very good shape. Staff very friendly. Pace of play too slow. 5 hour round.
Solid beautiful course
Just the pace was really slow .. Didn’t see the Marshall at all.. Other than that this golf course was spectacular
Only played 6 holes
The six holes I played I was 3 over but then the lightning came and I took a raincheck
