The Swan Golf & Country Club
About
Located just 5 minutes off of the New York State Thruway in Saugerties, The Swan Golf & Country Club (formerly known as The Lazy Swan Golf Course) is a championship 18-hole course designed by Golf Architect Barry Jordan. The course has been exquisitely crafted as “a series of linked passages of natural beauty” with each hole presenting its own unique character and challenges for players to overcome. Players will encounter several cascading and reflection ponds, rock outcroppings, dramatic elevation changes, an alpine garden, and beautiful views of the Catskill Mountains.

Horrible experience
I booked this tee time earlier in the week. 3 of my buddies and myself, all drove over an hour away to come play this course. We get there to find out the course is closed. It's a beautiful Sunday afternoon, and no way to get to play another course. Definitely the worse experience ever and I was charged the full amount right when my tee time was supposed to happen. I dont know if golf now or the golf course dropped the ball. But this was the worst experience ever.
Bad experience
Booked a tea time on Memorial Day, drove to the course and at 8:40 and it was closed. Not a great experience for my golf partners and myself.
Good
The course wasn’t in pretty good shape compared to previous weeks. The greens were cut the fairways were cut nice. Course was a little wet because of the rain. The course has gotten better in the last month or so. Always a good time player here.
Greens had improvements
Tee boxs had improvements
Fairways had improvements
Rough is a little thick but it’s almost November
Highly Recommended
Having played nearly every course in the hudson valley (and beyond), the Lazy Swan is up there with the best public courses. Not sure why they are currently off of GolfNow, but am hopeful for their return. While nearly every course struggles to maintain proper turf in their fairways, you can actually hit your irons properly,as their fairways rank up there with some private clubs. They had some issues with moss on some greens, but they held incoming shots, and rolled true.
Needs work
I played this course 2 years ago it was in better condition Sand traps were in bad shape then and they are now, my main complaint is the grass around the sand traps is a foot high. If you were lucky to find your ball you can hardly get it out of the grass never mind the conditions of the bunker. The other complaint is some crabgrass in the fairway and Tee boxes need some working on. But with all that I said I still like the course just needs a little work and I think it would be well worth going to
Needs work
I’ve played this course about 10 times over the past 3 years
This is the worst I’ve seen the greens, not all but at least 9 of them had punched spots that had turned into dirt no grass in spots around the greens
The bunkers were hard panned dirt and weeds in them.
The layout is fun to play some really difficult holes
I really hope this course gets the improvements it needs to bring it back to a 5 star course
We have had a rough summer. Unfortunately, our superintendent moved to a new course in the middle of season and a few workers left with him. We had to find a new guy and it was during the " growing season" for grass. Thankfully, the weather has cooled down and the heavy chemicals can now be applied to the grass. Give us a few weeks and it will return to the course it has been in the past. Trust me, it angers me, more than it does you!
Surprised how bad the cause maintenance has become.
Unfortunately the course conditions were terrible. All of the greens had bare patches. Tee boxes hadn’t been tended to for a while. Disappointing for a course we have enjoyed before.

Lazy Swan A+++
Great place to play, awesome fairways, friendly staff, and the pace of play was great,
I highly recommended this golf course
interesting course needs attention
the club is great, the course is interesting and challenging and fun, the grounds need attention. the bunkers were unplayable and tee boxes not great. fairways were in good shape. greens were varied with a lot of dead areas. didn’t see a groundskeeper all day.

Total golf experience
Every time I play Lazy Swan i have to remind myself multiple times that I am in the Catskills From the amazing restaurants, outside and rooftop bars, and the great course layout, we spend our day experiencing it all. After our early round we have lunch and then meet friends for drinks all within 20 yards of the first tee box. Can’t wait to return
Thanks for the great review! come visit us again!!
Gem of a course.
I golfed here in 7/14, upon arrival we were greeted with a friendly smile and welcomed to the course. We arrived ahead of our tee time, but were able to get out early. The pro gave us a quick orientation of how the course was laid out and advised drink lots of water, it is a hot one. Restroom were immaculate, clean, clean. You hit them 3 times on 18 holes.
The course itself was laid out nicely, doglegs here and there, uphill shots here and there., down hill shots. Fairways were well groomed, rough reasonable. As mentioned in previous reviews the bunkers are in need of some care. I lost a ball near one of them because of the growth of weeds on the backside, yes yes shouldn’t have been in there, but would have expected to find the ball. The views surrounding you are beautiful, mountains off in the distance.
Pace of play was as expected, not to slow or to fast, just right. We finished in under 4.5 hours with 3 of us and waiting in some holes as we were behind a 4 some. So that is great.
The ride from Albany was easy, but oopsie on google maps, took us past the course, we turned around as we had seen the course but thought maybe another entrance.
We all said must go back now that we know the where to hit and not to hit, yeah like the woods, the water. Haha
Anyway a good value, nice course, nice pro.
Thank you for the great review. Yes, the bunkers are the project for the summer, our staff is working daily to mold them back in shape. I hope to see you here again!!
Lazy Swan
Great course to play for the area. Conditions of the course was good and kept in good condition. Only complaint was after a great day of golf my wife and I was looking forward to a few cold drinks at the outdoor bar. A few other people were there also, we all waited 10-15 minutes but nobody came around, even after staff was notified. So we all left.
Glad to hear that you enjoyed the course. Unfortunately, there's not much I can do when it comes to the restaurant. Hope to see your group again.
Love it!
Lazy Swan is a great course, presents a challenge, always a great experience and a fun day. Best 19th hole anywhere!
Thanks for the great review!
A Worthy Introduction to New York Golf
After driving through the Hudson River Valley dozens of times en route to NH from VA, I finally decided to check the Empire State off my lists of states I’ve played and after reading several reviews, chose The Lazy Swan as my destination and I’m sure glad I did.
The aspect of this course that drew me to it and that I’ll most remember is the fantastic and unique layout. The signature par-5 7th hole is one of my favorite holes ever with a towering tee shot and nice risk-reward options from the fairway. Back-to-back par-3s on #9 and #10 is highly unusual but this course’s collection of par-3s is so good I didn’t mind in the least.
The diversity continues with driveable (but blind) par-4s, long par-5s, wide open holes and some narrow landing zones. The elevation changes will definitely test your club selection and distance control. Even though it was my first time out there, it was easy to see everything in front of me from the tee on most of the holes. The look and shape of the course made it an absolute joy to play.
The conditions were a bit of a mixed bag. Clearly the course is well-maintained and while the greens were still recovering from aeration that was probably well over a month ago, they rolled smoothly with good speed. It was obvious the course has been working on the bunkers with many of them having fresh sand that’s doing a better job of keeping the weeds out than those bunkers than haven’t been attended to. A couple bunkers were unplayable but properly marked as ground-under-repair.
Tee boxes, fairways, and rough were all in very good shape despite the overall wet conditions. There were two short downpours that came through during my round and the course drained quickly from them both.
The staff here is friendly enough and the facilities are ok but the lack of water on the course, drink cart, and no driving range were noticeable and missed. I got a Hot Deal for $25 on GolfNow, making this an excellent value. I would highly recommend you check out this fun course if you are in the area.
Thanks for the review! We are currently repairing the bunkers, the engineers did a horrible job with the drainage in them. As for a driving range, if we had the room, we would have one. Hope to see you again!

I have mentioned in some previous post that we had a change in our superintendent this summer, and also lost some employees with him. We hired a new " super" and he now has a full staff, the course has really improved the last 2 weeks.
