The Swan Golf & Country Club
About
Located just 5 minutes off of the New York State Thruway in Saugerties, The Swan Golf & Country Club (formerly known as The Lazy Swan Golf Course) is a championship 18-hole course designed by Golf Architect Barry Jordan. The course has been exquisitely crafted as “a series of linked passages of natural beauty” with each hole presenting its own unique character and challenges for players to overcome. Players will encounter several cascading and reflection ponds, rock outcroppings, dramatic elevation changes, an alpine garden, and beautiful views of the Catskill Mountains.

Lazy Swan
Great course to play for the area. Conditions of the course was good and kept in good condition. Only complaint was after a great day of golf my wife and I was looking forward to a few cold drinks at the outdoor bar. A few other people were there also, we all waited 10-15 minutes but nobody came around, even after staff was notified. So we all left.
Love it!
Lazy Swan is a great course, presents a challenge, always a great experience and a fun day. Best 19th hole anywhere!
Thanks for the great review!
A Worthy Introduction to New York Golf
After driving through the Hudson River Valley dozens of times en route to NH from VA, I finally decided to check the Empire State off my lists of states I’ve played and after reading several reviews, chose The Lazy Swan as my destination and I’m sure glad I did.
The aspect of this course that drew me to it and that I’ll most remember is the fantastic and unique layout. The signature par-5 7th hole is one of my favorite holes ever with a towering tee shot and nice risk-reward options from the fairway. Back-to-back par-3s on #9 and #10 is highly unusual but this course’s collection of par-3s is so good I didn’t mind in the least.
The diversity continues with driveable (but blind) par-4s, long par-5s, wide open holes and some narrow landing zones. The elevation changes will definitely test your club selection and distance control. Even though it was my first time out there, it was easy to see everything in front of me from the tee on most of the holes. The look and shape of the course made it an absolute joy to play.
The conditions were a bit of a mixed bag. Clearly the course is well-maintained and while the greens were still recovering from aeration that was probably well over a month ago, they rolled smoothly with good speed. It was obvious the course has been working on the bunkers with many of them having fresh sand that’s doing a better job of keeping the weeds out than those bunkers than haven’t been attended to. A couple bunkers were unplayable but properly marked as ground-under-repair.
Tee boxes, fairways, and rough were all in very good shape despite the overall wet conditions. There were two short downpours that came through during my round and the course drained quickly from them both.
The staff here is friendly enough and the facilities are ok but the lack of water on the course, drink cart, and no driving range were noticeable and missed. I got a Hot Deal for $25 on GolfNow, making this an excellent value. I would highly recommend you check out this fun course if you are in the area.
Thanks for the review! We are currently repairing the bunkers, the engineers did a horrible job with the drainage in them. As for a driving range, if we had the room, we would have one. Hope to see you again!
great price on sale
my wife and i play here as often as we are able. The course is always in good condition and the greens are excellent.
Thanks for the great review!
Excellent course with great views
The Lazy Swan course will provide many fun challenges to golfers of any level. The course is in very good shape and the views are excellent. The greens well maintained and roll true. Definitely a fun round.
Thanks for the great review! Come visit us again!
worth the drive
Course was in great shape considering the wet spring in NY. Greens rolled true, tees, fairways in great shape. Nice variety of holes, with some difficulty and diversity. Shout out to the greenskeeper and staff.
Thanks for the great review! Hope to see you again!
Decent Course.
The course photos are a little deceiving. The online photos make it appear as if it's a very well manicured course. But that's not the case. The course layout was fine. Fairways were fine. Greens were fine, but a bit inconsistent.
Bunkers were the biggest downside for me since they were lacking sand. They were just dirt. Luckily I only ended up in one bunker (sort of). Also, the bunkers were not cut around the edges, so there were weeds growing all around them, and in them. I had one drive that landed just shy of a bunker, rolled to the bunker, and came to rest on the wall of the bunker on a weed that was protruding from the side of said bunker. Like, literally resting on a plant growing out of the edge of a bunker.
Cart paths (where there were paths) were pretty rough as well. Hang onto your gear. You could easily lose things rolling over some of the rocky paths.
I was the first person on the course, so the pace of play was great. I can't comment on whether or not that is the case for most people.
I would definitely recommend playing this if you're in the area. But for me, I traveled about 1.5 hours to play. I wouldn't do that again unless I heard about a few improvements. But if you live in the area, or are traveling through the area, by all means check this place out. Price is right.
Overall, not a bad course. I've played worse courses, but I've definitely played better courses as well. The bunkers, rough cart paths, and lack of a drink cart made this a 3 star review instead of a 4 star review. Change a few things and you have a great facility.
Thanks for all your great ideas, but here are a few reasons that we can not do some of them. First of all, you pass the restaurant 3 times during your round. If you remember holes 6-9, a beverage cart would never fit on those paths, neither would a truck, so paving them would be extremely difficult. If you remember going to holes 13-17, a beverage cart can not cross that road with alcohol, per County rules, so therefore a beverage cart would ride around the same 6 holes all day and you go to the bar after 3 of those holes.
I totally agree with the bunkers, the groundscrew knew that was their project this summer and they got relaxed with them. We have 75 tons of sand and they are being redone as we speak. Thankfully, you only went in 1 of the bunkers that you spoke of! Glad to hear the fairways and greens were good, that's what most golfers care about. Hopefully, you give us another shot.
Great golf course, well maintained and not too busy
We had a great time and love the golf course. Pace of play was good eventhough we got stuck behind 2 slow players and ended up grouping for the 9 front holes, 9 back were just us and was fun and fast. Well maintained golf course. Staff could be friendlier with non members though. Also driving range is 2 net and just a practice green. Great value for money and well maintained and fun golf course. We will come back.
Glad to hear that you enjoyed the round. I apologize if you feel we were not friendly enough, we were a little busy with a County Championship and your group showed 1.5 hours before your tee time. As for the range,if we had the room, there would be a full practice facility.
great price on sale
Had things to do but my wife said lets play golf so i went on Golfnow and was happy to see Lazy Swam at 10:50 booked it and had a great .
Thanks for the great review, hope to see your group again.
Decent track
Fun course to play. Unfortunately due to rain lately course has not been cut enough and it shows. Bunkers were in good shape and greens recently aerated. Overall still nice and staff are great.
Glad to hear that you enjoyed the course. As you know, it was a very wet Spring. Our staff is catching up on the mowing. Hope to see your group again.
The Swan
Played the course early Sunday and it was wet....if they had cart paths it would have been paths only. Course was very wet and rough pretty high due to lack of mowing. Still a great day, can’t wait for it to dry up so i can come back. Had lunch at bar and it was excellent.
Conditions were good, rough and traps were rough but expected due to recent heavy rains ,
Lovin The. Swan
Course was in excellent shape with all thevrai. Greens were pretty bumpy due to a golf outing. Many bunkers still unplayable due to rain and bunker edges not trimmef.
Thanks for the review. Yes, the rain has been plentiful the last month, when the course dries out, everything will be back to the norm.
Bunkers washed out. Some has gravel with no surface sand. Clumps of cut grass in the rough made it difficult to find balls. Bunkers do not have enough sand and not setup by personal to play fairly. Took a nice gouge out of the bottom of my sand wedge.
Sorry to hear about your wedge, I haven't heard anything like that before. With all the rain the bunkers were washed out. Unfortunately, you can not do anything to the sand until it dries, wet sand becomes mud if you groom them while they are wet.
Great set up, but tough conditions
This course is beautiful and I will return again and again. It seems though that this course has received far too much rain, and they have not been able to keep up with the condition of the grass, especially in the rough. The fairway and greens were pretty soft, but very playable, but the rough was completely unmanageable. The rough was at least 6” deep almost the moment you go off the fairway. This would be fine if there were not so many bunkers and so much water. The result was a video game course which was extremely penal today. I think it would be fabulous and extremely fair with the rough cut to an inch or the course to be completely dried out.
Thanks for the review! Yes, the rain has not stopped the past 2 weeks. Our rough is generally fair and very playable. Unfortunately, the wet grass is impossible to cut, as soon as we can cut, we will.
Great Setting/Needs Some Love
Beautiful setting on the edge of the Catskill Mountains. Atmosphere at the outdoor raw bar is without compare, and the delicious ceviche was made with red snapper and shrimp, not tilapia!
Staff were cordial, but certainly not engaging in the least. While fairways were groomed, the perifial rough was in need of better maintenance. Some quirkiness in the layout, it was still both challenging and enjoyable with the exception of the #16 par 3 hole that had a blind green and seemed forced into the landscape (I made a 3.) Cart trails, not cart paths, no cart beverage service provided, and very limited access to potable water was extremely taxing on a hot and humid day. No excuse for a course not to provide ready access to water for their clients in the heat of the summer! I recommend the course if your in the area, but would not travel 1 1/2 hours to get to it as I did! I will however recommend that outdoor raw bar setting to anyone traveling in the vecinity.
Unfortunately, we had over 5 inches of rain the few days before you played, with 2.5 inches on that Friday. The day before you played, Saturday, we didn't allow carts. Sorry, but you can't cut wet grass.
Great day!
The course is in great shape considering the midsummer heat. The greens are in amazing condition and roll fast and true. Not a long course, but does require different shots to manage your way around. Fun layout and reasonable price. They have a great restaurant and raw bar too! I will be back very soon!
Thanks for the great review, come play again!
