The Swan Golf & Country Club
About
Located just 5 minutes off of the New York State Thruway in Saugerties, The Swan Golf & Country Club (formerly known as The Lazy Swan Golf Course) is a championship 18-hole course designed by Golf Architect Barry Jordan. The course has been exquisitely crafted as “a series of linked passages of natural beauty” with each hole presenting its own unique character and challenges for players to overcome. Players will encounter several cascading and reflection ponds, rock outcroppings, dramatic elevation changes, an alpine garden, and beautiful views of the Catskill Mountains.

Nice course
Course was in fine condition, a fun and challenging layout, decently priced. Nice outdoor bar when weather cooperates. Swans were active, not so lazy.
DanKnows
Fun course to play with lots of water hazards. You don't need to hit it long to score well at this course. Me and my buddy both broke 90 and we are not heavy hitters. My only complaint is that a few of the bunkers are full of rocks. I went into the bunker on hole 4 and had to pick up my ball. It took me an hour to get to this course but I will return as it was worth the ride.
Glad to hear you enjoyed the course. The bunkers have been redone. We added 60 tons of sand to them.
Poorly Managed Course
Played on Sunday in the middle of the summer (July). Every single sand trap was unplayable either because there was standing water or because standing water had dried and no one on the grounds crew raked the traps. Not a single beverage cart on the course (in the middle of July) and only one water station on the entire back nine (3 for the course in total). It seems like management does not care or is not thinking much about the on course experience of the players.
The greens were in good shape and the pro seems like a great guy. Would definitely want to come back, but likely will not.
Ok. Makes sense. Thanks for responding. Look forward to playing again.
I apologize for the wet bunkers. We had over 4 inches of rain from that Wednesday night until Saturday morning. The bunkers that are full of water, have just had 60 tons of sand put in them and they take a few weeks to settle, the others will get sand put in them shortly. As for a beverage cart, you pass the bar and the snack shop 3 times alone on the front 9. If you remember our 6th hole, there is no possible way to have a beverage cart up that hill. Also, a beverage cart can not cross the road on holes 13-17, per county rules. So, we would have a cart driving around 5 holes.
Enjoyable day on the links
Despite a very wet spring, and torrential rain the day before our round, the course was in very good condition. There are some great holes here, and the greens were in fine shape. After moving nicely through the front 9, a slower group finished lunch and bogged things down for our group on the 10th tee. Within minutes, the slower group were spoken too by the staff. After that, they moved it! Kudo's to the staff - handled nicely and greatly appreciated. Will return.
Thanks for the great review. Hope your group comes again!
Course is in Poor Condition
I played this course over Memorial Day weekend and the course was in really poor shape. The bunkers had large rocks in them and hardly any sand at all. Some of the tee boxes had grass that hadn't been mowed in weeks, in fact we couldn't even get to some of the tee boxes without walking through grass that was over 12 inches long. The course is definitely not worth the money they charge for the condition it's in. It's a shame because my friends and I used to love coming to play this course. I hope they start maintaining the course again, because we won't be back until they do.
Read the comment from the day before, Champ
It's telling that the golf pro's response doesn't address the poor course conditions at all.
200+ rounds over Memorial Day Weekend and the only gripe comes from this group, he was in the group with the guy who commented below.
What happened?
I have played this course a number of times over the past three years. Three years ago, this course was a gem... good mix of holes, picturesque and well maintained. Two years ago... pretty much the same. In fact, I got my golf buddies to travel here to play some rounds. They complained about the drive but loved the golf! Last year, however, things took a turn for the worse. They aerated the greens early and I guess after they sanded them, the sand washed out and the greens never really grew back in. Additionally, it seemed as though some work was being done on the traps and there were major issues with sand play. Everybody complained and we just decided that the drive wasn't worth it anymore. Now, let's talk about this year... We played here yesterday (Sunday of Memorial day weekend) figuring the course should have recovered and that it would be in tip-top shape for the weekend. Wrong! It seems that they just stopped all work on the traps as they are at exactly the same stage of (in)completion as they were when we last played there which was august or so of last year. The traps also had weeds and rocks in them causing us to make our own local rules in order to play. Several tee boxes were completely overgrown as in no mowing for a few weeks? Greens were OK... not great but also not bad. The fairways were also OK. Nice in the middle but a bit unkempt around the edges. The rough wasn't mowed rough... it was just allowed to grow uncontested. Overall, the course just gave off the feeling that the owners and grounds crew had given up and were doing the bare minimum to be able to say that they are open so that they can charge greens fees. And about the greens fees? We paid $63 per man... not bad for golf on a holiday weekend but just way too much to play here. There are just too many quality courses to play instead.
No beverage cart and no water at the spots where water coolers were supposed to be didn't leave many options. I had asked about a beverage cart but the pro told me that we get to pass by the bar three times and could get something to drink then.
We have had issues before with the level of customer service... electric carts dying after 10 holes and being told that we shouldn't floor the pedal because it will drain the batteries quicker; being told that we can't play an additional 9 or 18 at 4:30 in the afternoon because the pro wanted to leave; no ranger on the course to prevent the 5 1/2 hour round; restaurant, bar and snack shop closed at 1:00 in the afternoon on a weekend; etc... Still, we tried to support the course and give them our business. No more. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, thrice, four times or more and you might as well call me an idiot.
When you contrast this round and the round we played just the day before (Saturday) at a different course that's a bit closer to us, it's almost laughable. They have a driving range and practice area. They have a beverage cart (with a friendly and cute cart girl). They have a full pro shop with a friendly pro and staff. They have a restaurant that was open. And best of all... the course was in great shape with playable sand traps and rough that was mowed to three or four inches! The cost? It was actually a dollar less! I can't imagine that the Lazy Swan will be in the golf business much longer without a significant change in how they conduct their business. From what I have been told, the course is owned by a retired doctor who had been hoping to host an LPGA tour event within a few years of opening. Perhaps the good doctor has been a bit distracted as he is seeking a re-zoning of his latest acquisition - the former Dutchess Golf Club in Poughkeepsie. I have read that the doctor is not a golfer but that shouldn't stop him from taking a tour of his course. I would think that, should he do so, he would be taken aback by the state of the product that is being sold in his name.
Sorry, we don't meet your expectations.
Handled like a true professional. It seems that you don't handle criticism well. Why do you feel the need to disparage anyone who takes the time to post that they found their experience to be less than awesome? Negative comments must invalid and a sign of deeper character flaws? I am not the first person that you've employed this tactic with and, if you don't do something to address the issues with the course, it's very likely that I won't be the last. You should not assume that, just because people have not taken the time to write a review, that everyone thinks the course is in wonderful condition and that it is staffed by friendly courteous people. Not everyone feels that it is worth the time to call attention to ongoing deficiencies with the course. I decided that it was worth the time so that other golfers would know what to expect when they planned a day of golf at your facility. My question to you would be: "If you truly did have over 200 rounds played during Memorial Day weekend and have hosted other golfers in the weeks since, where are the positive reviews?"
I have learned that different people have different expectations. Some are happy with less and everyone has their own criteria on what makes a great round of golf. I'm sure that not everyone is as disappointed with the decline in the conditions at the course just as I'm sure that there are others who are not bothered by the surly "professional" in the pro shop. I just wanted to give an accurate description of current course conditions that has been echoed by others I have spoken with besides the members of my group that day.
As for keeping crats on the path of the par 3's, I'm not really sure what you are referring to as I do my best to respect the course... even if the staff does not.
Great! please keep your $ 63.00. We like golfers that keep their carts on the paths on par 3's.
nice course, a lot of par3',s easy to get there.
Played this course late last year. Played again early this year, would like to get another round in this year. Was wet early spring. you could tell with ground under repair. Grass in rough is high because of wet weather. Greens were in nice shape and fast for me.. Ran bye with a lot of my putts.. Love this course..Want to play again later in season when everything grows in..
Thanks for the great review! This has been a wet spring.
Nice
Coursewas in excellent condition even with all the rain lately . kudos to grounds crew. Had freinds from North Carolina with me they we're very impressed
Thanks for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed the course.
Lazy swan
The course was in pretty good condition considering all the rain this spring. We enjoy the layout which includes long shots and enough water to make it interesting. None of the amenities were open when we were there but it looks like it could be interesting to have a drink at the outside bar after a round.
Thanks for the nice feedback. All the facilities will open ( full time) on May 19th.
Lazy Swan
This is a well designed course with plenty of water and bunkers to keep you alert. Nice mix of short and long holes give the full bag of clubs a workout. The 4 star for condition is simply a matter of the time of year, early spring. The greens rolled beautifully. In no time it will be a 5. The views of the Catskills are fantastic. Played here several times last year, I shall return.
Thanks for the positive feedback. The course should be top notch in a few weeks.
Nice layout but appears to not have the budget for proper maintenance.
Greens are in good shape but the fairways are beat up in places.
Its's mid April! Great review 3 days later. What an improvement in 3 days???
great outing
Played on election day and had a wonderful time. weather was great and course was in good condition.
Get to use all your clubs
Course is nicely laid out and there are bunkers on every hole and a lot of water hazards. Bunkers don't drain very well but at the time of play, there was some construction to put new or repaired drainage systems in many of them, should help immensely.
Unfortunately, the greens were aerated recently prior to play so there was some bumpiness.
The course can be difficult at times so hitting the fairways is well rewarding.
Windy Day
Played today in the wind. Greens were nice but the fairways are really bad. This is sad because it was a nice course in the past. Fortunately, we got a bargain basement rate through Golf Now, but there was confusion in the office. Bring your receipt because they don't have a clue what is going on and would have turned me away. Fortunately, they got us out - but it's always something with these guys.
I have no clue what she is talking about. The course is in great shape, with the exception of the aerification, which is needed. This isn't the 1st negative post from this golfer, but she's here all the time????
Worth the trip
A little off of the beaten track, but fun layout. Excellent greens, fun elevation changes, and nicely conditioned. Some wet lies, but it had rained the night before. Would definitely play again.
Nickie was a pleasure
So I have played Lazy Swan a few times a year. The Layout is fun and plays more difficult then the slope rating. Greens were fast but the Sand Traps were terrible. No sand just packed down mud. Not much rain to make them that way... Nickie the Bartender was great with a nice smile and personality. Food was very good. Great out door Bar!
Thanks for playing! Sorry you are unhappy about the sand conditions, but the course had .7 inches of rain the previous night.
Much better than the previous reviews
I don't know what people expect when arriving at a golf course, I was treated very well by the staff. They didn't open bottles of champagne upon my arrival but got me out in a reasonable amount of time, which is what I appreciate. The course is a little tight in some places but the fairways, and greens are in good shape. Some tee boxes are little banged up, but if you don't repair your divots this is what happens. Pace of play was good 3:30 hrs. 18 holes is pretty good.
There is a nice outdoor restaurant and bar at the course, plus several other facilities.
All in All is was very pleased after driving an hour to play at this course.
Golf Course NOT #1 prioirty
Course was obviously not being maintained at the level one would expect. Greens slow. Traps not groomed. Looks like the course is being abandoned.
Focus at this establishment is the catering and outside bar. Golf course is not the #1 priority.
good but needs work
Nice round of golf. Greens and tee boxes were in very good shape. Fairways need some work. Looks they were beat up from dry weather and lot of play. Works on them and it would be a awesome round of golf
