Sugar Mountain Golf Course
Nice course for iron play. Short but enjoyable. Tee boxes need attention. Greens are challenging. Pace of play is slow.
Super hard fast greens
This course challenges your short game. Green are great but super difficult.
Some bunkers had no sand.
If you are in the mood for a tight, tough executive course, it’s great.
Can be slow.
Fun Course
I have read good reviews about this course and was looking forward to my round. I knew in advance the layout was different in that it has mostly par 3's and par 4's but wanted to take my dad to a course that would not be too long. When checking in the staff was extremely friendly and welcoming and we were off to the first tee.
The tee boxes were a little rough due to divots but the fairways and greens were in much better condition than I expected. They were in a condition that was just as good as a high-end club that I played earlier in the week. The fairways were lush and the greens were fast and true. The bunkers were considered ground under repair so it was lift clean and drop at the nearest point of relief.
The layout is narrow and misses are penalized. The greens are full size as well as most of the par threes. My only recommendation is to shorten some of the par 3's to make them a little more fun. The par fours are short but still a test. The mountain scenery is beautiful.
Adjust your mind and give this place a try. It is still golf, just a little different. The course conditions are worth it.

Fun Course
Sugar Mountain is a fun little course. Conditions were very good. As with many courses these days, the bunkers are marked “Ground Under Repair”, and obviously haven’t been maintained since the beginning of COVID. Other than that, everything else was in very good shape. The course is great for beginners, because of its length, and it is quite fun for experienced players, because birdies are more accessible than on most other courses. I would highly recommend this course for a “fun” mountain round.
While just a par 64 this place will kick your tail! Slick greens and in fabulous condition! All you big hitters that can only hit a driver may be disappointed, requires finesse to shoot a good score! Wonderful course!
Beautiful course
Beautiful course. I love to play this course because I’m from Texas and The weather here is so beautiful. Course is very beautiful but very difficult. This course rewards accuracy. I lost a lot of balls. :-)
Summer round
Course is a lot of fun. Come expecting to work on accuracy and course management. This is not a tee it high, and let it fly type course. There are probably only 3-4 holes where you can hit driver, and non where you really need to. Had a blast though, greens are perfect, and views are spectacular.
Not worth it
Short, narrow course, super hard fast greens but zero sand in bunkers. Rocks and clay only For what they charge, it’s expensive.
Weekend Starter Needed ASAP
Played on a Sunday that was cart path only due to week’s worth of heavy rain. Even with path only conditions, 4500 yards should never take 5 hours to play. I was in a foursome with a twosome in front of us, a single in in front of them & a twosome in front on him. A packed weekend day demands mandatory pairing up to foursomes...no discussion. Course conditions were great with the exception of washed out bunkers. Will happily play again during a weekday, but will probably skip playing another weekend round here.
Excellent Condition
Tom, was a great ambassador and made us feel welcome. Course in very good shape, and greens excellent. Interesting layout. We will return.
Did not realize this was going to be an executive course. Mostly par 3s.
Excellent executive course.
Very nice challenging course. Some long par 3s from back tees. Course was in excellent shape
Great course
Had a wonderful time, and round , Tstorms cut it short , all the Staff as very approachable and easy to speak with.. even the kitchen staff.. will definitely play again once I'm a local. Wouldn't recommend walking the course tho.. you are in the mountains of NC after all..
Fun and interesting.
Sugar Mountain is an interesting Par 64 Executive with nine par threes, eight par fours and a single par five. Long hitters have a chance of hitting the P5 in two and a couple of the P4s from the tee. The P3s vary in length from a short 105 yards to 207 yards and there are a couple of dramatic elevation changes.
I always had a good lie in the fairways and the greens were in great shape and very receptive.
The course is laid out for walkers, but the pace was slow as it was full of golfers of all abilities.
I really enjoyed the round and saw some beautiful vistas.
Fun and Interesting!
Sugar Mountain is a fun executive course with 9 par threes, eight fours and a single five. Long hitters have a very good chance of hitting the P5 in two and a couple of the P4s in one. The par threes vary from a short 105 yards to a 207 yards creating unique challenges from every tee shot including a couple of dramatic elevation changes.
The pace of play is slow as the course was crowded, but it is laid ideally for walkers.
Club house and grounds staff are friendly. I did not enter the snack bar, so I’m not qualified to speak to its amenities.
Last point: Sugar Mountain sets in a valley and provides some beautiful vistas.
