The Becky Baker Fountain and Plaque. Photo submitted by rglennbaker on 02/11/2018
The staff is super friendly and welcoming. The grounds crew is doing an excellent job. Even during the protection phase, when the greens get a little longer, the greens are in really good shape. They aren’t laser fast, but they are true and smooth. Course is in great shape.
Best Kept Secret
Thanks to the golf now app I found this course for my group of four to play! We’ve played the Tangelwood courses and all the other courses in the area but never Salem Gleen. We were pleasantly surprised. What a great find and an awesome course to play. One we’d love to play again sometime! Impressed!
great course great time
Course is in great shape, greens are rolling true. Sand traps are white and the fairways are plush. Staff is friendly. This is a must-play course if you are in the area.
Worst experience I’ve ever had on a golf course
I had the worst experience I have ever had at a golf course. The Assistant Superintendent was extremely aggressive towards me and my playing partner. He was using profanity and acted as if he wanted to have a physical altercation. My playing partner had to call the pro shop and request someone meet us on the 3rd hole to intervene. We were told to stop by the pro shop at the turn and we would be refunded for the round of golf. Once we got to the pro shop, one of the gentlemen seemed to think we had provoked this guy and should share some of the blame for his actions. I can't even wrap my head around what we experienced today. We elected to cut our round short after 9 holes as we were still shaken from our encounter on the 3rd hole and simply did not feel welcome at this point. Upon leaving the pro shop to return the golf cart a gentleman met us outside and seemed to be sincere and his apology for the Assistant Superintendent's behavior was appreciated. I don't want to say I will never return to this course as the facility seemed nice, but this experience will stick with me for a long time, and I do not plan to return in the foreseeable future.
Doing better
Although this course used to be one of my favorites, It has gone through some trying times.
As of the date I last played this course, they are doing much better.
Still the hazards remain poorly marked if marked at all, ground under repair is not marked at all, some holes ( other than par 3's) remain cart path only, which is a problem for some of us with mobility limitations, sand traps had not been raked for a couple of days. We were not made aware of any these conditions upon checking in, I thought you should be made aware of these problem areas.
All in all, I think they are doing better, yet could be doing much better.
Nice Course....Bad Drainage
This was a nice course for the money. Cart path only because of poor drainage all along the property.
Very friendly staff though. I would definately go back.
Excellent Course!
First impression : Very friendly and informative staff .
Course conditions were decent given the amount of rain we received earlier in the week.
Value for money was outstanding . Played 18h as a single , got done in 3.5h which was fantastic. They were smart to have completed the aerification a few weeks earlier than other courses in the area.
A great driving range and well stocked grill made it for a perfect golf outing on a Spring day in NC!
Great course - but...
Tail end of our Myrtle Beach trip - really looked forward to the course as reviews were great. Wow - pro shop staff didn't really care about their job. The course was in terrible condition (fairways and tees were in terrible shape - zero stars), why did they not tell us in advance. We would not have played. In front of us - a young family with Dad giving lessons on each hole, come on go to a range or play after twilight. We finally gave up and left 8 holes - really bad experience. However - the course layout was outstanding - right up there with the best we played at south Myrtle Beach. Terrific design that would challenge stronger players and allow mid to high handicappers to enjoy it.
I know the price was great - but disclosure of conditions would have helped a lot.
DISAPPOINTING
Had originally intended to play Oak Valley but they had an aeriation alert so paid $10 more a person to play here—mistake. Greens had been aerefied and no alert. Fairways soaked doesn’t drain well.
Too Wet
Despite being a beautiful spring like day , with blue skies and temps of 70, the course was a mess from previous nights rain. My mistake for not calling to check on conditions especially knowing the course doesn’t drain well .Fairways were good considering this late in winter season, but very sloppy, and some tees were in bad shape . A number of washout areas in the rough that will need attention. As you would expect, ponds in some traps and some of the greens were spotty . Carts on path made for very slow play but it was backed up all the way and over 4:45 was way too slow. Did have a ranger out one time which seemed to help for a few holes, but needed a follow up visit to move things along.Because of the weather, I’m giving the course a pass as we enjoy playing the course and the layout. Check recent reviews before you play to make sure things have improved
Too many walkers
Coarse was in good shape for this time of year but play was very slow due to too many players walking
Good Round Today
Hadn’t played here in awhile but I love the layout. After heavy rain the course responds pretty decent. Pack a lunch, hot dog is 10.00.
Salem Glen
We arrived at the course early and went to check into to prepare for our round. The gentleman at the desk was absolutely wonderful and provided all the information necessary to have a good time at the course. The course provided the right amount of challenge and is absolutely worth playing again. The only negative is the greens . They are not in the best of shape and could definitely use some work. That's my primary reason for the course condition rating.
