Avila Beach Golf Resort is located right along the bay, giving it a scenic setting that has made it the most well known of the Central Coast golf courses. The layout offers plenty of variety with a hilly front nine that features small, often elevated, greens that are surrounded by oak-lined valleys and a back nine that that is routed across a tidal estuary. Golfers should be prepared for forced carries over water and multi-tiered greens on the backside. At first the course may seem short, but thanks to the dramatic elevation changes and numerous other challenges, it will begin to feel much longer. There are several severe doglegs throughout as well as tight approaches. Avila Beach Golf Resort is not a layout where you can easily "grip it and rip it." Rather, accuracy and good course-management are rewarded.

Poor Conditions, poorly managed, look elsewhere

It truly is a shame because of the location, this could be a gem of a course. Unfortunately, the owner who owns this and from what I hear also owns Black Lake does not take care of their courses. Literally, nothing has been done to improve let alone maintain this course. Greens are trashed, overgrown vegetation all around, some green cups were recut and just filled with dirt, fairways absolutely trashed with gopher holes and dirt mounds, trash overflowed in bins, I could go on and on. My buddy and I agreed we would never play this again even on a discount rate. No effort is put into this course and it shows. Look elsewhere.

Avila golf course

The course is in terrible shape! They don’t put any effort into making it better. I keep trying it on and off but have decided to not play here anymore. Driving the cart down the fairway is smoother than the cart paths. The only thing that is good here is the pro shop staff, starters, and mulligans. I remember playing this course when it was considered a jewel. But not anymore.

Bad value even for a hot deal

The golf cart was covered in spiderwebs and was littered sunflower seed shells.

The driving range was mats only which is fine but the mats were torn to shreds.

Unkept greens and fairways.

The 18th tee markers were two scorecards pinned to the ground with tees. Never seen that before, so that was kinda funny.

Disappointed

We used to LOVE this course but probably won’t come back. The conditions were poor. There were deep squirrel holes everywhere (watch where you step you could break an ankle), signs on some holes non-existent, (hole 10 - no sign, no markers, just a ball wash). Just generally poor repair. 😞

Course Conditions were nearly unplayable.

The greens were less than ideal with multiple mud spots and patch work dryness. I was lucky to be able to find the tee boxes at the beginning of certain holes. All most every part of the cart path was in disarray, disrepair that it felt like an off-road adventure where you would in an ATV to cross without experiencing every bump on the stiff suspension of a golf cart. Don’t bother coming here to play just because it’s a course near the beach and labels a “resort”. Spend the money elsewhere!

Good course for a hot deal

Some of these holes are laid out pretty weirdly. The greens are moderately well kept. The fairways are good.

The sand was just wet clay but what can you expect in the central coast. Overall positive experience will be back.

Also their driving range is just wedges and irons on broken down mats so don’t waste your money on extensive warmup at the course

The course has a great layout & design

Great course layout, however it needs to be maintained better. Tee boxes were not groomed, could not distinguish fairways from the rough.. Staff was very friendly.

Course in terrible Condition

Arrived to check in and was told that holes 10 and 18 were not in play due to a concert on the course. The cat paths are a mess with more large pot holes then Californias roads.

I remember 25 years ago this was a beautiful resort course. Now it is no better than a mowed pasture. It’s in sad shape. Very sad.

Believe the reviews!

Nice layout. Maintenance staff was working on the course, but, the reviews say that the course conditions gave only gotten worse. The fairways were not cut and lower than the rough. The ground was uneven so riding the golf cart was more than a bit bumpy. Sand traps were overgrown with weeds and not much sand. Greens didn’t look great, but, rolled well and held the balls when I hit the green. Great price as a GolfPass+ member and booked a Hit time.

A shamed

Not sure what’s going on, but when you lose three golf balls in the middle of the fairway, something’s wrong. Not sure when the last time they mowed the grass, but this was absolutely terrible. We normally play more than once on our vacation down there not this time. I hope the owner reads this message and takes matters seriously cause we will not be playing there again until it is fixed. Even the locals are talking about it and are very unhappy. I am glad that my course in my town takes pride in their golf course.
