Golfer Reviews
Wow, What a Course
I’ll definitely return and given the current drought and heat conditions in the area, the course was amazing. Savanah was a great assistant in the shop, and we flew around the course. Great track for sure.
Nice course
Really nice course, difficult with lots of blind shots. Enjoy playing there, staff were nice and friendly. I recommend playing this course.
The greens were nice!
The peace to be able to play a 4 hour round on a very challenging course on weekend is well worth the price.
Legendary Mike Strantz layout needs a little more TLC
As a huge fan of Mike Strantz designs, I’ve played Caledonia three times, True Blue, and just hit Tot Hill Farm last week. After watching the Golf Channel and Bob Does Sports episodes, I was incredibly excited to finally tee it up at Royal New Kent. The layout itself did not disappoint. It is absolutely amazing, highly unique, and offers a fantastic challenge. To top it off, the staff was great and incredibly welcoming from the moment I arrived. However, I was surprised and a bit let down by the course conditions. Several greens and fairways were rough around the edges, and there were too many small, unattended maintenance details to mention. It's a bummer because the bones of this course are spectacular. I love the routing and will definitely come back, but I’ll wait until the conditioning improves to match the world-class design.
The Worst Value Course I’ve Ever Played
My foursome and I selected this course as the signature course of our 48hr trip of 72 holes. We were extremely excited to play a unique course alongside a few more traditional ones.
Before I continue, I will give the context that when we played, this area of the country was in an extreme drought. Even still, the greens were like putting across a braille page. Like playing plinko. The tee boxes were very bare and hard to find large patches of grass. The fairways would have 30 yards of barren grass, or be a minefield for small green tufts of grass.
In summation, this was the worst value for a round of golf I’ve ever played. I paid $90 for that round. I maybe would have paid $30 for fair value.
Difficult to putt on greens where it’s maintained.
Will not play again until they manage the fairways and greens.
Not worth it during the summer
The course has a great layout and super fun but the course was dead greens looked awful and the fairways were dead and patchy.
Very Disappointed
I played RNK 2 years ago and thought it was very nice but right now, This course is NOT worth the price they are charging. Fairways are lacking green grass in many areas: The greens have been recently sanded with bare spots on most of them: Tee boxes are also lackluster. No water, ball washers or trash cans on the course: In addition, no beverage cart. Staff is nice and friendly so thats a plus, but RNK should reduce their green fees until they fix these problems.
Great course!
The course was challenging but very enjoyable at the same time. The staff were all nice and very welcoming. Special shoutout to the starter, she topped us off with ice cold water at the turn. The greens had patches in them but it’s been very hot lately. The carts have course tracking in them and was very useful for yardage to the hazards.
Love This Course--Hate the Conditions Right Now
Royal New Kent is another Stranz masterpiece. It's extremely challenging with lots of ravines, carries, fescue, creeks, deep bunkers and blind shots. No hole is the same, and you really have to think your way around this course. Unfortunately, RNK took a beating from the cold, icy winter and the greens and many fairways are in rough shape. I recommend the course because of the layout and challenge, but you might want to wait until it recovers. Luckily, I had the Tee Time Pass so instead of paying $84, I paid $60.
Awesome Layout
Played RNK for the first time in 12 years. Layout is a blast if you like Strantz courses.
Staff extremely friendly. Unfortunately, VA has had a tough spring with little rain and the course conditions were marginal at best. The greens rolled pretty good but they have a lot of bare spots. The fairways were hit and miss....some were fine and some had a lot of winterkill. I hope they get some rain and cooler temps. If you know what you are walking into you'll enjoy it....if you are expecting pristine conditions then find another course to play.
6/3/26
Have played this course at least a couple times a year. First time this year in 2026. A crazy amount of fungus, dead grass, and painted green dirt on fairways and greens. Course is usually difficult with the amount of blind shots but the care for the course makes up for it. Sadly it was not the case this time. Placed food order at 8 tee box for the turn & when we went in, proceeded to be told that only two items were on the turn menu now and needed to be reordered. Posted menus and drinks were incorrect & a let down. A once fun course to drive to play is now not worth the time or $. Pace of play was great though for Thursday morning.
Rough
Greens are in terrible shape
Fairways and tee boxes are not much better
Very Challenging Course
This was rated one of the top "must plays" in the Richmond area. Teed off at 8:30 in the morning to avoid the rain that's coming around noon. The course layout is every difficult for the average gofer (I'm a 12 handicap), it gets frustrated after 9 holes. prepare to loose a few balls for the round. The course was not in very good condition especially the greens, very spotty, dead patches on every green, and putts are very jumpy.
Great layout
Great layout and a challenging course. Not sure if it was due to the drought here in the middle of May but the fairways were struggling and many of the greens looked very bad. Most of the cart paths give you the impression this course was forgotten about 10 years ago. If this place got a little money put into it it would be an amazing course.
Nice but very dry due to drought
The course layout is great. Greens were fast. Due to a severe drought in Va the course was pretty dry and brown. Hopefully we get some rain soon to green it up.
This course isn’t worth the $85.00 green fee. Fairways are mediocre with lots of bare spots, greens are in bad shape with large bare areas and some of the fairway bunkers have no sand. There was no water available on the course and no beverage cart, played this course 2 years ago and it was great. It has drastically gone downhill.
