Colonial Heritage Club

About
Colonial Heritage Golf Club offers the only Arthur Hills-designed layout in Williamsburg, and it is also the city's only gated golf community. Golfers looking for a place where they can just 'grip it and rip it' will be out of luck on this course, which requires skill and strategy. It is a thought-provoking design where golfers will want to weigh all of the risk and reward options first. The layout plays through deep ravines that provide interesting changes in elevation. The golf course also features undulating fairways and large, fast greens that are bordered by strategically placed bunkers as well as water hazards that come into play on several holes. Colonial Heritage G.C. definitely provides a good challenge, even for a seasoned player, but beginners shouldn't feel too intimidated. The golf course offers some room for error and the risk-reward opportunities appeal to low and high handicappers alike.

It's not easy to get on the green on the par-3 14th but if you do, you've got a great birdie opportunity. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 03/11/2020

Look at this, where do I hit the ball Photo submitted by Douglas5507193 on 10/16/2013
Very hard course
This is a very well kept course, but it is extremely difficult. Lots of blind shots and very small landing areas. Lots of trouble for being offline at all. Best suited for very good golfers.
May be the most difficult course on the peninsula.
I played this course as a guest. Did not know what to expect. The staff and facilities are very good, the course is near pristine. We played on a day of cart path only. This course is not easy and cart path only made it tougher. Plan to climb to the greens on many holes. The amount of elevation changes is extreme. Several tees are to blind layups. Ravines are unforgiving. Any thing other than in the fairway is very challenging. Course is not designed for walking, though I don't believe it is an option. If you have any endurance challenges or disabilities be prepared.
Very Solid Track, Challenging! Put it on your list!
Awesome course, awesome layout. Really great layout.
Conditions I would say are slightly above average - everywhere I’ve gone this year with Bermuda grass seems to be having a tough time during this transition from spring to the summer months - no exception here.
Greens are solid.
It’s a place you’ll want to play a few times before you feel as though you have a handle on it. I’ll certainly be back for a second visit just to see what I can do with a little more knowledge of the course.
Only complaint - for the price of a round, range balls should be included. Already paying $85+ for a round of golf, no one wants to pay that much and then be nickel and dimed over a small bucket of balls. I get it though, the range doesn’t take care of itself.
Friendly
The staff was very friendly, the course was in great shape, affordable, and it was a fantastic day to play.
This course is not for sissies!
Arthur Hills took a piece of land largely unsuitable for golf and turned it into a mind-bending challenge for shot makers. Raw distance isn’t what is asked for. You have to it it to targets, many of which aren’t obvious. The fairways aren’t very wide, and the terrain is extremely unforgiving. Every hole provides a different challenge: doglegs, small greens, deep greenside bunkers, gulleys and barrancas, water hazards, and ultimately, the highly contoured greens.
Several shorter par fours tempt you to hit driver from the tee, but it’s almost always a bad choice. You want to hit it to where you can see it, not into the wooded surroundings.
When we finished, I looked at my scorecard and was surprised that I only had two double bogeys.
I look forward to returning for another go at the course, especially now that I have some badly needed local knowledge
Challenging Course
The course is a very challenging course. If you are not familiar with the layout you can add a few strokes to your card by then end of 18.
Beautiful course.
Staff was very friendly and helpful, especially the young man in the pro shop! It was very windy and okay was pretty slow but everyone was patient and pleasant. The course was beautiful with wood bridges over deep ravines. Tee boxes were strategically placed to accommodate all levels of play but it’s challenging! Would definitely go again!
Was fun
5 hour round. Like a little faster pace. It was fun to play.
Great Day on a great course!
Booked my round the day before on Golf Now app for $50 and found a 70 degree day where my threesome finished in 4 hours. Course conditions were terrific.
Great course
Colonial Heritage Golf Club has a great layout with many options for players of all skill levels. Greens are well kept and course is in great condition. Would recommend to everyone for the price. Layout features a good combination of tight and wide open holes with elevation changes. Other than not have the hole layout on the scorecard, I have no complaints!
Challenging Course, But Great Fun
I haven't played this course in several years, and wanted to try it again. It is very challenging--you need to think your way around this course and course management is extremely important. Just gripping it and ripping it will only get you into trouble. There are lots of carries over ravines, narrowing of fairways, slopes and unfavorable bounces, and strategically placed bunkers...unless you think your way through each shot. There are two holes that are brutal--#5 and #16. Take your time and work through where you want to land your shots--it probably isn't a driver and probably includes a lay up. The course was in great condition for late November. The rough was not too terrible, and the fairways and greens were in good shape. I joined a group at 11:30 and we were done in plenty of time before it got dark at 4:30. Even though it was fairly busy (on a 65 degree November day), the pace was good. If you like a challenge but playable course, Colonial Heritage will give you both.
