Chesapeake Golf Club
About
Chesapeake Golf Club sits tucked away in the idyllic village of Las Gaviotas, conveniently situated just 15 minutes from downtown Norfolk. Boasting some of the best greens in the Tidewater area, the club offers the amenities of a private club with the fees of a public golf course. The layout will challenge you with rolling fairways and tricky doglegs. Water hazards come into play frequently so be prepared for a few intimidating blind shots over water. Mature trees line the rolling fairways and there are also strategically placed bunkers lurking along the greensides. The manageable 6,278-yard length is approachable for beginners yet there are still holes that long hitters will enjoy. Chesapeake Golf Club is a course that will test your skills but it's not overly punishing for the high handicapper.

Come back course of the year!
Haven’t played this course in a few years due to the course conditions. Mix up with the chemicals I heard. Greens were unplayable on most holes.
Currently, greens are in great shape considering where they were. Tee boxes are clean and thick on par 3’s. Staff is beyond friendly and accommodating. Course is tight and will make you plan for your next shot. Miss the fairway and you’re dropping. But it makes up for it being a little short.
Carts are still a little weathered but they put covers over the seats that are a little rough. And “the turn” is inconveniently placed. It’s after hole 7 or 8. Not a big deal.
It’s no big club establishment, but it’s worth giving them another shot if you’ve passed on them over the last two years. And for $25-40 a round depending on what deal you score, it’s WORTH it. Also on a weekday, there was maybe 20 people playing.
Course is in good condition overall and is often an overlooked one. Never busy and always worth the price! Will be coming back
Improved greens
Stopped playing here last year when the condition of the greens became horrible. The greens are now in pretty good shape although there is still one temporary green. This course is challenging - lots of water requiring accurate layups. I’m not sure why the holes have been renumbered as neither Hole 9 nor Hole 18 put you at the clubhouse. Not a fan of back to back par 5’s early in the round on Holes 3 & 4. Nonetheless I’ll be back.
Getting better
Ever since I started playing golf in the Hampton roads area, I had hear horror stories of Chesapeake GC. I’ve played it 3 times this year and it is one of my favorite affordable courses when I want to get out on short notice.
You can tell the team is putting in the effort to make the course better, and the layout is fun.
Come along ways.
This course was in terrible shape several years ago. They have done allot of work and it is improving !¡ one green is out of play due renovation but looks like it's almost ready! great value for the money
But wait….
I gave rate of play a 3, not because we were being held up by other golfers, but because of trying to find the balls. The rough (and some fairways) are quite shaggy and the leaves are everywhere and in some places, very thick. I play at another course that is built around housing and has just as many trees. There, daily, they run big blowers and run them everyday to keep the fairways clear.
There is one very bad green that looks like it has a fungus. Bad enough that our foursome agreed when we got on it that we wouldn’t count any more than 1 putt.
And then there’s the golfers. EVERY green was riddled with ball marks!! Every green (except the the one with the fungus) I fixed no less than 3 ball marks aside from mine. Never hit a bunker so I can’t remark on them. Nicely designed water holes.
The carts are gas and a bit long in the tooth. Many with tears in the seats and bald tires. They are gas carts.
On a positive note, the staff is very friendly and the cost of a round is very reasonable.
Huge Potential
Fun course and great staff. Course needs work, but most the greens were nice. The clubhouse had a good vibe and everything was clean. Some greens looked like they were being repaired. The rough is DEEP and you'll likely spend a lot of time looking for a ball. Dont lay your club down because it'll disappear as well. The fairways on the back 9 need some love too, but overall a lot better than I expected. We'll be back and look forward to seeing the course develop.
Some improvements but still more to be done
The course conditions have improved some since the last time I played here 1 year ago. However there are still some holes where the greens need improvement along with the fairways.
They are turning it around
Not gonna lie last year and start of this year i swore this place off. They really have been putting the work in. Course is in much better shape, not amazing but good. Definitely worth the money, they even have a little bar and grill now thats good
Needs Work
Course needs better management. Gave this course another chance after 6 months, but this has to be one of the worst maintained courses in the area. Greens and tee boxes are horrific. Some greens under repair so putting on make shift fairway greens. Geese and goose crap everywhere. Play somewhere else. Course could be fantastic, but I won’t pay the current rates to play this course again in its current condition.
Ball Eater
I would've rated the course much better had there not been two temporary greens that were unmarked. Anything off he fairway and good luck finding your ball. two feet off the fairway and we were searching for 3-4 minutes, the ball just buries in that grass,
Course has potential
I booked a group of three and we invited an elderly gentleman to join us on the first tee. We hadn’t played there in a year because the greens had gotten so bad. The greens are improving but still need more time. Also there are 2 temporary greens which are nothing more than a hole in the fairway. For whatever reason the course holes have been re-numbered so you have back to back par 5’s on holes 3 & 4. The pace of play was okay but there are were far too many singles and doubles. We let a few play through but after the front nine we stayed in position - never saw another foursome. I would not pay full price to play this course in its current condition. I do like the challenge and layout of the course. I’ll give it a couple of months and try the course again if I can get a deal through GolfNow.
Great day
Great course…. They are working on greens… rough is a little long… makes missing fairway very challenging…
