Castle Bay Country Club
About
Although it is tucked away just north of Hampstead, Castle Bay Country Club will make you feel as though you've been transported to the British Isles. The golf course offers an authentic Scottish-links design that incorporates the natural wetlands of its coastal Carolina location, giving it a truly unique character. The landscape of rolling dunes is covered with native grasses but completely devoid of trees. Tall sand bunkers are strategically placed throughout and there are also expansive waste areas, both characteristics that are true to its links nature. Water hazards come into play on several holes as well. Accurate shot placement is the key to doing well on this course and just like any seaside links layout, the coastal breezes play a prominent role. Much of the difficulty of the golf course comes from negotiating with the prevailing winds.

Really nice course
First time playing. The layout was fun, a few of the greens were struggling but overall it was in good shape. Follow the GPS as it has some targeted landing areas. I would play again if I’m in the area.
First timer @ Castle bay!
I can not wait to go back.
Everything on our outing was perfect.
Still in spring conditions but think the course would be even better come summer play.
If it was a bit closer to Carolina Beach I would be playing here regularly!
We arrived early to hit balls and warm up. We were among three groups who DID NOT HAVE A CART available. Most disturbing to me was that THERE WERE NO APOLOGIES heard regarding the situation.
The staff was nice otherwise. Course was thin, not greening up yet in early spring. Like hitting on green dirt. Greens were firm/hard. Suspect conditions should improve with warmer weather.
April 2022 Cart Issues
Cart availability is an ongoing problem at this course when teeing off between 12–1:30. The slow turn-around of carts results in delays in teeing off. Example: I was slated for 1:24 and ended up walking and teeing off at 1:40 then slow play for 9 holes. Passing 18th green, I noticed no one on green, fairway or tee box which is unheard of for this hole (short par 4). Mgmt needs to buy more carts or expand the gap between tee times. Rangers need to do better monitoring speed of play.
Slow Play
What can you do? I've played this course a few times, maybe once a month, based on close to where I live.
It is always windy at this course. The staff is great, very friendly. Carts have new GPS systems.
But the last few times I've played here, play is very slow. The GPS keeps informing you that you are 24 minutes behind, 32 minutes behind, but what can you do? You are stuck behind probably the slowest group on the course and there are 2 holes open ahead of them.
I enjoy playing the course, and always the people I get paired with, but every round has become at least 4.5 hours and usually closer to 5.
Frustrating when you get those messages, but there's nothing you can do about them, and they don't do anything about them.
Great course!
This was a beautiful and well maintained course. It plays difficult on some holes, but definitely worth the challenge. With it being within a neighborhood, it was a little nerve racking driving off the tee sometimes (I have a slice from time to time) and the possibility of hitting a house is there. I would give the course a 10/10!!
I’ll be back
Great layout, good pace.
When we arrived the range was closed
When we made the turn the restaurant was not open yet.
Looking forward to returning
Surprisingly good for the $
Staff wasn’t the friendliest, but that is fairly normal when 2 female golfers show up. Course was in good condition for the time of year. Greens rolled nicely and were pretty fast. Pace of play wasn’t great, but 445 hrs is not too bad for a weekend.
Great Links Course
Overall course condition was good. Greens were in very good shape. Pin placement was challenging and with 15-20 mph winds, it made the course challenging, especially holes directly into the wind for a real Scottish links experience!
Love Castle Bay
I love this course. Staff is friendly. Course is in good shape and should only get better as it continues to green up. I hope that more people will take advantage of the restaurant so that they can extend their hours.
