Ironclad Golf and Beer Garden
About
Ironclad Golf and Beer Garden (formerly known as Belvedere Country Club) in Hampstead begins along the Intracoastal Waterway and then moves inland towards the clubhouse. The back nine is routed through tall forests that provide a home to grey heron and osprey. The golf course forms a large figure eight, which means you won't find any parallel fairways, but you will also be faced with wind whipping in every direction. The unique layout consists of six par 3s, seven par 4s, and five par 5s that all place a heavier emphasis on accuracy than distance. Many of the greens are elevated and the fairways are lined with trees. The par 3s are some of the most demanding holes due to their small, narrow greens. They are the toughest greens to hit in regulation but luckily if your placement isn't perfect there are still opportunities to save your score.

Beware.
Had read a few reviews about the course being in rough shape but they were fixing it up. Wasn’t our first choice but due to short notice all we could get. Wow!! This course needs a ton of work. I get that it may have been bad before but it doesn’t appear that they are actually fixing the course. There was an immense amount of sand on the greens. Clearly to try to fix them but man it was impossible to putt on them. Then the tee boxes had more undulations than the greens plus when I would tee off on a par three I had to use a 3 1/4” tee because the grass was so long. Then to pay $35 a round was ridiculously over priced. Monday played a course 20 miles from there at $27 and was in fantastic shape. Overall doesn’t look like there fixing up the place so be cautious booking here.

The course needs some attention, however it has potential that it could be a very nice course with some work.
25 handicapper
Course has new owners and is being renovated. Greens (5 or 6 of 18) in disrepair but playable. Tees need work too. But overall the layout is fair and play is fun. Really great to have fresh draft IPA after round! Terrific value if you can handle imperfections.
Restoring course
Enjoyed the round on a perfect day. They are in the process of bringing back a course that looks like had gotten run down a bit. Have played several times and the course is getting better so they are doing a good job. Couple of the greens are a little ragged but they are working on them and that's all you can ask. Overall I enjoy playing there.
Going through growing pains
Great course for the money if you can deal with a few hiccups as it gets off the ground. It’s been recently reopened and as such they are still working on some of the greens, there aren’t any 150 yardage markers on the holes so you’ll be guessing yardage if you don’t have a range finder on you. Layout is fun though, very laid back atmosphere, friendly staff. Looking forward to seeing what this course grows into down the road.
Doing great!
This course is really startingtocome together the greens are starting to look alot better and you gotta love good beer!
Laid-back range, solid course for the money with improvements on the way
We played Ironclad in early September 2021, and it was a solid course for the money ($30pp). I would pay double that to play it in a few months when they’re done with everything they’re working on. It looks like they’re going to have a really awesome beer garden and clubhouse, it’s just mid-build at the moment.
Would I take a prospect/client? Probably not
Would I take my father-in-law in an attempt to impress him? Absolutely not.
Would I take some friends for a round (of both beers and golf)? Abso-friggin-lutely.
The course is a fun layout but they’re definitely still working on refining some aspects (like the greens… don’t go if you’re actively trying to work on your putting).
The course has a lot of short, challenging par 3s and gettable par 5s mixed with some pretty straight-forward par 4s. Really good variety compared to some other courses, especially along the coast. Good undulation for a mostly flat landscape.
Just enough challenge and forgiveness to make it just the right amount of fun and frustrating for a solid round.
Definitely worth a trip, especially once they’re done with all of the awesome improvements!
Getting better!
The course still has some ways to go, but it was overall a great place to be. Tee box’s need love as well as some of the greens, but they are constantly working on this course. Can’t wait to see the final product!
Fun course
They are renovating and it needs work but still a great course! Great beer and staff couldn’t get any better
Good course
This course has made many positive strides in the right direction. Given that they’re bringing new life to an old course, it’s very good.
Poor Communication and Customer Service
Have played this course a half a dozen times this summer. Course is in good shape and getting better every week. The few greens with problems are even improving.
Unfortunately I can’t say the same for the check-in team. Would have been nice to tell me when I checked in that the back 9 is closed and we’d have to play the front nine twice. Grounds team chased us down on #10 after our tee shots. When we returned to #1 there were 4 groups waiting. Disappointing to say the least. The check in desk person then let’s me know the maintenance schedule for the week after I returned to ask. Thanks.
Recommend the course make it clear for online reservations if both front and back nine’s will be open or not.
Good course!
1st time I played this course a couple months back, the course is as in the process of being revived. There was some improvements that were made and very noticeable. IMO, for the price, it’s better than bear trail.
Fun golf/Great Beer!
We recently moved to the Topsail area and are avid golfers. We’ve played 3 other courses in the area so far, and this is our favorite. Great course layout. Good mix of different shots required. Fairways are in excellent condition. Yes, there are a couple of greens (2) that need serious repair, but this is an excellent public course overall. Beer was fresh and tasty. Overall value is excellent. We’ll be back many times.
