Lexington Golf Club
Lexington Golf Club is a great municipal facility in Lexington, NC. It's location in town does prevent it from having a driving range. The course itself is well maintained all the way around. Greens are always in good shape from tee to green. The course isn't overly long, 6100 yards from the tips, but the rolling terrain, elevation changes, and doglegs make for challenging holes. You will hit different clubs off the tee; a 14 driver course it is not. The rates can't be beaten for a course of this stature in the area.
It actually is a hidden gem
Lexington Golf Club is the old Lexington Country Club, now run as a public course by the city. It's tucked away in a quaint setting -- the clubhouse and pro shop is across the street from the 1st and 10th tees. There are (at least) 3 different parking lots. It's different from a lot of more modern courses ... and for most golfers that's a good thing.
Because of its former life, it doesn't feel much like a muni. It is tucked inside a neighborhood, but most of the holes border other golf holes, not real estate. It's architecture and its length -- it's a very short course -- will give golfers who never played at an old-style club a feel for yesteryear. Break out your persimmon-head clubs and your balata balls and go at it.
It is a clever layout. Like a lot of old courses, it's cut through some rough ground -- creeks, hills, etc. They best land was left to the neighboring homes. This makes sense both for home and golf course. Yes, those dang creeks keeping popping up, eating golf balls, but really, who wants to play on boring, flat pieces of ground? Nearly all the fairways at LGC have some pitch and roll, both sideways and up and down. Some are quite dramatic. Tee shots require some thought. Driveable par-4's -- and there are a few -- demand a certain amount of precision.
The small-is greens are cool, too, with lots of slope and roll. Approach shots won't be long on most holes, but hitting greens, or hitting greens near the pin, isn't easy. The course is short, but it's harder than it looks. "Little" golf is fun. A typical quirky layout -- back-to-back par'3's for instance -- add to the interest.
We played on a hot summer day. The tees and fairways were in good shape.. The bent grass (?) greens were surprisingly. Hot, humid weather usually isn't their friend, but they were fairly soft (the area was in the beginnings of a drought), putted true, albeit not super fast, and were a delight.
The facilities are kind of spartan. The clubhouse, underneath the old clubhouse building beside the cart shed, is small. Don't go here expecting a big meal at the club. But the people were cordial, and no one will starve in these parts. If you're playing here you're in Lexington, N.C., home of the world famous Lexington-style barbecue. A half dozen superb barbecue dinners await, just minutes away.
Lots of courses are tagged as "hidden gems." This one really is. It's an old Carolina country club that anyone can play for a municipal course price. That's a pretty good deal. Try it out some time.
7.6.21
Course was in good shape. Pace of play was about 4 hours 15 minutes. Should be a lot faster out here but a few slow groups ruined the pace.
Course is in great shape
I played Lexington Golf Club twice in the past couple of weeks and it is in great shape. The greens are true and soft and the fairways are in good shape too. I played on a Wednesday and Sunday, both times at 8:20 am. Both rounds finished in under 4 hours. This is by far the best course in the area for the money. It’s shorter than some other courses but it is fun to play.
Great Value !!!
Nice course for the money. First time playing here & will be back. 18 holes in 3 hrs. Fairways & greens in great shape.
Nice course—great value!
Normally would not expect too much when green fees are only $35, but was pleasantly surprised by the condition of this course and the greens.. For the most part the course was in great shape. I enjoyed the course quite a bit as it was challenging but not overlly difficult. After not having played for quite some time it was the perfect course to get back at it! The Round was a little slow, but not excessively so. We waited a few minutes to tee off on most holes. Will def be back though!!
Great conditions
Course was playing absolutely pure. Fairways and greens are in great condition and very few spots that need work. Course layout is scorable yet challenging at the same time. Great value for the money!
Why allow 5somes?
Had a tee time for 11 a.m. on Thursday. As our threesome approached the first tee, we observed that the group on front of us was a 5some of seniors. One member of our group who is a member at LGC, said something about it, to which one from the group stated "That's only on weekends, we know the rules". The 5some stayed pretty much in range behind the 4some in front of them, but the pace of play was horrendous. As we came off the green at 13, I saw another 5some of seniors on the 15th green. They were at least 1.5 holes behind as there were no groups on 16 and none on the tee at 17. This group was 3 in front of us, and held up at least 5 groups, as the two groups behind us were also stuck. I very much enjoy playing LGC, but am seriously considering not going back as this Thursday round took almost 4.75 hours which is completely unacceptable. I've seen Rangers out there before, but did not notice any yesterday. Or, as I suspect, these two groups of 5some are members who nothing would have been said to anyway as their support of the course is more important than daily fee players
Great find, perfect price
Course is beautiful, challenging in places, forgiving in others. Affordable price too!
Great Value for the Money
Course has greened up well. Excellent layout and great value for the money. One of my go to courses.
