Golfer Reviews
Wonderful!
Have played this course a few times in the past. Had a friend visiting and thought he would enjoy this course. Staff was super friendly and helpful. We did not encounter anyone in front of us that impacted our pace and on the back 9 let a single play through.
Love the layout. Course was in excellent condition. #17 had some work being done around the green, but did not impact our play. The sand traps were not recently raked, but we had some heavy rains recently. Normally they are excellent.
Had a great time and definitely will return,.
Fun Mountain Course
Many elevation changes and tee shots that require different club selections. Pace of play was somewhat slow but it was 4th of July weekend and busy. Overall course was in great condition. Would play again if in area.
Course was great
Beautiful golf course. Every lie in the fairway was perfect, greens were in great shape. Glad we found this mountain course.
Beautiful mountain design course
This course is absolutely beautiful the design is terrific mountain course you will enjoy the course conditions are terrific greens road very nice fairways quite lush staff very friendly we were the only ones on the course in the afternoon so we played at our own pace
Short and Straight
That's the kind of game you need to have out at Cleghorn. Almost every fairway is tree-lined and you really have to keep the ball in the fairway. Driver is not needed on more than half the holes out there. Surprisingly you can find your ball down in the woods, but it doesn't take much for your ball to find them. If your hitting fairways at Cleghorn, you're going to have a good round.
Nice find....
Got a great rate and decided to ride over from Brevard and give it a try. We will be back, the Golf Coarse was in great shape and the staff very friendly.
Not quiet there yet
Today was the first time that I have went back to Cleghorn since it reopened again. The course is coming back and you can tell the management is trying to get the course back to what it used to be, but its not quiet there yet. I'd love to play it towards the end of the growing season, and I bet it would be wonderful. The layout is still great and the scenery is beautiful. The tea boxes are still growing in, and there are large bare spots on many of them. Same thing with the fairways, the grass hadnt grown in all the way, and there were some bare spots, and the ground was extremely hard. The greens were in nice shape and were soft and rolled great. Speed was about average to a touch on the slow side but rolled straight and true. Overall a nice course that can be a great course with a little more time and TLC.
Grass is growing!
The grass is really starting to come in on the fairways. I played on Thursday when the fairways were freshly cut, and the greens double mowed. They were rolling at the perfect speed. I'd say about a ten. The course has only gotten two or three nights of rain in the last few weeks, but the rain is really setting off the fertilizer. The progression is noticeable.
Amazing as always
This course never ceases to amaze me! From the staff to the golf course to the beverage counter! It's always been great this course never ceases to amaze me! From the staff to the golf course to the beverage counter. This course is amazing! Play it!
This course has a lot of sand!
The course was very clean and well maintained. Each green has an ample amount of sand traps that really challenge the average golfer. Each green does have a fair opening to the putting surface so there is a reward for a good clean shot onto the green. Several winding streams create challenges for fairway shots as do the several well placed lakes. Greens were in excellent condition and very smooth.
Very Enjoyable Round!
Played course this past weekend while I was in the area, really good course with a great staff!
Great day for golf
I noticed the reviews and rebuttals from the course staff before I made my reservation but for $12 I decided to give it a whirl. I am a 5 handicap and shot 78 so my statements are not because "I was having a bad day". I understand that the course is coming back from financial issues so it will take some time and dedication by the golf staff (which appears to be happening).
Pace - Slow on front due to several elderly groups playing ahead
Layout - Outstanding with elevation changes and a creek dissecting holes on the back nine
Greens - Decent turf but slow...hole edges very jagged which is the norm for Bermuda greens so holes may not have been moved in a while
Fairways and Tees - Grass very sparse...yes I know the difference between no grass and dormant grass (see attached picture from middle of #13 fairway)
Traps - Maintained with good sand consistency
Facilities - Water and Bathrooms after 4 and 14 which my wife always appreciates!
Course maintenance is my top priority in recommending a course...perhaps in a year with a major grass growing effort this course could be what it once was.
Mountain Course
I had not played Cleghorn in 15 yrs maybe. The course has not come in yet for the spring, but you can see that this is going to be a great course once the fairways come in...Great Value.
dont belive mjedwards
i played the same day as mjedwards. I personally thought the course was in good shape considering the area has had rain the last 3 days. the fairways overall in good shape however the burmuda grass is still dormant. The (few ) bare spots in the fairways appear to be where weeds were and are now gone, which is a good sign that the owner is spending money to correct issues. I played the course early in 2014 and the difference between now and then is amazing. The greens are in great shape and a decent speed. However i know the greens are burmuda and are just coming out of dormancy. I have a strong belief that when the weather warms up they'll be in great shape and up to speed.I see the changes the course is making and looking forward to returning. And for the bunkers the looked like any other course thats had rain. mjedwards must've needed something to blame a bad round on. To the others interested in this course i urge you to try it and not judge it or write reviews on a rainy day. tks.
Don't believe previous reviews
After playing Cleghorn today, I'm 99% sure the ownership is writing the previous positive reviews. The course was in awful condition. Tee boxes were not level with a mixture of bare dirt/mud and crabgrass. Fairway was just red mud with occasional patches of grass. Greens looked decent but were incredibly slow. Bunkers were unplayable for the most part. Pace of play was good only because we were the only group on the course today. Food counter was closed, but enjoy paying $8 for a tuna salad sandwich or ham and cheese. Brutally bad overall, which is a shame because it really seems like a fun layout.
Great place to play
Top notch. A great place to play. Nice course, great club house
Love Cleghorn Plantation!
Always fun out here, some interesting holes and history on the property. Par 3's can be brutal! Previous owner repurchased it and is slowly returning it to it's former stature. Good roast beef sandwich!
On of favorite courses in the area
If we didn't live quite so far away, would play here almost all of the time. Beautiful views, course is in great shape and its never quite as crowded as some of the other public courses.
Character
This course has great character. If the winds blowing it can make it hard
Thanks for your comments on your recent play at Cleghorn. While we welcome all opinions, positive and negative, we hope that reviewers will base their opinions on facts, not fiction. First, did you explain to the reader that you played on a rainy day (Friday March 27)? Any golfer knows that when it rains, fairways tend to get muddy, bunkers become unplayable, and greens putt slowly, especially if there's standing water. Most golfers also know that fairway grass in the south, including NC, SC, and GA, is 419 Bermuda which is dormant until the weather warms up. When temps hit 70 degrees and higher, our fairways will be as green as Augusta. Regarding our Champion Bermuda greens, this grass is also designed for warm weather play vs. bent grass which is a cool season grass. Come back when the weather warms up and you will see a huge difference. In summary, we appreciate your comments but suggest you learn more about golf course agronomy before expressing your misplaced opinions. Thank you. --Cleghorn Plantation
