Cleghorn Plantation
We played as a twosome on a Wed. pm. Staff was super friendly. Course was in pretty good shape on a wet front 9, very good shape on the back 9. The greens were very nice and rolled true. There were several challenging holes that put a premium on landing zones. Beautiful vistas on many holes. It was a fun round of golf. I would recommend this course to anyone who enjoys a challenge.
Challenging but Fun
The course is well maintained and has many beautiful views. Although the course is hilly, the fairways are wide and forgiving. Overall a great value.
Nice course to play
great day -- pace of play was very good. finished up in 4 hours. No two holes look the same --
cleghorn
staff was friendly...got the prepay rate for 17 a person. you cant beat the price. i dont think id pay the full price that they charge at the course cause its an hr away from me. $17 id play it every weekend. course was in great shape. rain held off for us. greens were a lil slow from what i was expecting.
Nice layout, bad fairways and greens
Course went into chapter11 and closed for several yrs..reopened 2 yrs ago and has a way to go...Loved the layout but the grass was full of weeds and the greens were not good.
Course coming in to old self again
Greens are coming in well. Much better than earlier on in the season. As challenging as ever. Beautiful course. Get out there ASAP for one of the best courses in western NC.
Worth the drive
The course has wide, sweeping fairways, generous gently sloping greens, and several elevation changes, to test your skill at adding or subtracting yardage as required. Add in some risk-reward holes & good putting greens, and its easy to say; "I'll be back!!".
Cleghorn is back
Played this course several months ago, about 2 weeks after it reopened and again 8/5. The difference is night and day. Tee Boxes 10/10 Fairway 7/10, needed mowing on the front. Greens 7/10, still recovering from being "punched' and had not been mowed thus the greens were super slow. My son and I used a hot time and were able to play for $17. WELL WORTH IT. If I lived closer (30-40 minutes) I'd play this course weekly. Has a mixture of dog legs, straight shots, short par 3's and at least one that played 190 from the whites. Hilly terrain but still plenty of flat lies. Sand in bunkers was in good shape, unfortunately for me I can attest first hand to both fairway and greenside. Enjoyed the round and will most definitely be back. Oddly enough, ran into a couple of guys that lived further away then I live, I remarked to one of the workers and she laughed and commented, "Yes, we don't see many locals." Either locals don't play or fear that it hasn't recovered from 2 yrs of dormancy. IT has recovered admirably and will only continue to get better if the 3 months between playing it is any indication. Kudo's to the owners and staff. Beautiful property with more then adequate practice space. Do yourself a favor and play Cleghorn.
Nice course
We really enjoyed the course. We had drove 1-1/2 hours to play the course. It was worth the drive!
We were disappointed to find they had just punched the greens. All in all they were pretty smooth considering. I could see where the greens would be very nice in a few weeks.
Fairways and the rest of the course were very nice. Above average. Beautiful layout. Tight fairways and mountainous.
I'd call the course a hidden gem. If you haven't ever played the course it is a must play. We will defiantly go back.
beautiful course
This is a gorgeous and challenging course. The views are incredible; I spent quite a bit of time taking photos (I was playing as an single).
There is a ton of elevation change and variety in the course. Quite a few great doglegs and fairly long holes too, with opportunity to try and carry hazards. Lots of opportunity for strategy.
The fairways were in great condition. Unfortunately they had just aerated the greens the day before, so I couldn't putt for anything.
Staff is extremely friendly. I can't wait to play this course again!
Nice Mountain Course
Beautiful course. Very friendly staff. Reasonably priced.
They are aerating the greens next week so I won't be playing there for a few weeks.
The course is no pushover
Haven't played there in a few yrs, and we decided to play from the tips which made it more of a challenge, but still fun. I will definitely be back for another round or 2 or 3. Great course to test your game and hit EVERY shot you can imagine
Great Design
This course sports an excellent layout. Beautiful views and elevation changes. The greens on a scale of 1 to 10 were about a 5. There are bad spots in the greens (that are being repaired) will get better with time. The greens were rolling true but were slow. The fairways, rough, bunkers and other course features were an 8. Overall this course was a great find and provided an enjoyable round of golf. I hope to play here again.
Great Layout Making a Comeback
If you haven't played this course in a while, it is well worth the trip. I last played it in March just after it re-opened and it was in really rough shape then. Now, except for some rough spots on the greens, it is in excellent condition and the fairways have come back really well. The staff is very friendly, especially the lady working in the grill. She was even giving away some home-made brownies. These folks are really trying to do things the right way, so hope everyone will support them. It is located a little out of the way, but it is worth the drive.
Great golf experience
Great course design. Can be difficult if not accurate. Very rural but worth the trip. Greens were on the slow and rough side but will only get better. Course reminded me of Spyglass at Pebble Beach, CA at a small fraction of cost. Finishing hole, #18, will separate the "men from the boys" with par being a great score.
Cleghorn - great course
I was very pleased with the course knowing full well that the course has been closed for several years. I believe the new owners and staff have done an excellent job getting the course back to the level that they want it to be. I would certainly go back and play this course many times in the future.
Needs work
I know it has been closed for a few years but the fairways were thin and the greens were horrible for the amount they charge to play.
Needs about 6 more months
Overall the course was in good shape. The greens are still recovering and need about six more months in order to fill-in. We enjoyed around, and the course was challenging.
Cleghorn Plantation
This use to be one of the best courses in the mountains. It still could be but the greens are all dead and are terrible to putt on, I found myself missing Putts that I normally never miss. The fairways, rough, and tee boxes are in great shape, but that greens make it unbarable to plan on!
Good Potential but greens not there
This course actually has a very good layout. Several great holes especially on back 9. You can tell they are working hard to bring it back.
Problem is - Almost all the greens are terrible. Most are so bad that putting was a complete joke.
I would play it again but not until they get the greens back. Not worth the $38 until then.
