Great golf experience
Great course design. Can be difficult if not accurate. Very rural but worth the trip. Greens were on the slow and rough side but will only get better. Course reminded me of Spyglass at Pebble Beach, CA at a small fraction of cost. Finishing hole, #18, will separate the "men from the boys" with par being a great score.
Cleghorn - great course
I was very pleased with the course knowing full well that the course has been closed for several years. I believe the new owners and staff have done an excellent job getting the course back to the level that they want it to be. I would certainly go back and play this course many times in the future.
Needs work
I know it has been closed for a few years but the fairways were thin and the greens were horrible for the amount they charge to play.
Needs about 6 more months
Overall the course was in good shape. The greens are still recovering and need about six more months in order to fill-in. We enjoyed around, and the course was challenging.
Cleghorn Plantation
This use to be one of the best courses in the mountains. It still could be but the greens are all dead and are terrible to putt on, I found myself missing Putts that I normally never miss. The fairways, rough, and tee boxes are in great shape, but that greens make it unbarable to plan on!
Good Potential but greens not there
This course actually has a very good layout. Several great holes especially on back 9. You can tell they are working hard to bring it back.
Problem is - Almost all the greens are terrible. Most are so bad that putting was a complete joke.
I would play it again but not until they get the greens back. Not worth the $38 until then.
nice layout
Course was in overall decent shape, though it was mid spring. Looks to be in rebuilding mode.
Liked the layout and has potential to be awesome.
Greens were in awful state but they looked to be improving them. Fairways and tee boxes were needing help too. Will see how irrigation helps come summer.
When the Greens Come Back
I've played Gleghorn for years. I am very glad they are open again after a short period of problems. The fairways are already in good shape. It is the greens that are not back yet. I believe by early June 2014 all will be up to standard. The terrain and course are both to my liking. It is somewhat hilly with large greens. Tee shots are fair and so are approaches. A good mix of flat and hilly lies makes for an interesting round of golf.....I;ll be back often when the greens recover.
Good fairways
Fairways and tee boxes were in good shape but the greens were terrible. Don't know if they will get those back this year. Otherwise, not bad for the money
Give it time
Cleghorn Plantation Golf Club is a superior, challenging lay out. The staff, facilities and food are all top notch. The course will be beautiful when the Bermuda grass comes in and the greens heal up. My son and I decided on a father-son day and picked Cleghorn on the recommendation from a friend. We live an hour from the course and the drive was worth it. We're both hackers ...my game has deteriorated and his is just getting good...we had a blast and connected with one of the local frequent flyers who was a fountain of information and welcome addition to our twosome. Be careful on # 12...I played Tin Cup golf on that hole, happy to have 20 "pre-owned" golf balls that went swimming. The kid had a big grin on his face watching me chunk one after another into opposing ponds. Our new found friend probably spent the weekend telling his buddies about the stubborn old man that wouldn't leave the tee box until he hit a ball over the water. I highly recommend the course, even in its current condition. In another week or two, it should be really good shape.
Definitely coming back
As of May 1, 2014, Cleghorn is playable. The greens will take awhile, but you can get a roll going and the ball stays pretty well on line. Slow...yes, and your pitch shots will stop on a dime, but there is grass. Just do not show up this spring/early summer expecting to play a money game with consistent conditions. The bunkers are pretty good, details not relevant to playability around the course have been tended to nicely. Fairways are playable and have a healthy look from the tee with some thin, sporadic growth when you actually get to the ball. Tees have grass and some crabgrass, and the rough is similar....grass/crabgrass blend. Staff was very friendly, and I am excited for Cleghorn's rejuvenation. Give it a chance...find out rates, show up with the right attitude, and just enjoy this wonderful layout! I always do...
In progress
Played here several years ah. I returned without knowing that the course had been closed down for two years and just reopened in March. All things considered it's coming along and will be in good shape before to long. A little rough right now. My wife enjoyed because it us very short from forward tees.
Needs some time
Course just needs some time to get into playing shape.
Greens were basically sand because Bermuda had not grown in. Fairways were hard so you got a good bit of roll.
By the fall of '14 this should be a jewel.
Brand new electric carts were great.
Poor Green conditions
I have played this course for over 30 years, and without a doubt, the worst greens I have EVER putted on. End of April, greens should be in good hope in the south, but these had no grass, only sand. Very disappointed. Would no
Teens theses recommend to play until summer around July.
Ratings based on current condition, loads of potential.
First off, don't use the directions linked to from GolfNow, they are worthless. Call the clubhouse! This course has just recently reopened on March 1, 2014. Prior to that it sat dormant for 2 plus years. It is not in prime condition at all. It is difficult to tell fairways from rough, but you can at least see that effort is being made by new owners. Greens, although they look horrible, rolled remarkably true. I gave it 5 stars for value because I paid $17 w/hot deal. Honestly, at this stage in the game, that would be the max I'd pay to play here, I'm also 40 minutes away from this course with many other options between me and Cleghorn. However, in a year, this should be a great place to play. The layout is challenging, lots of up and down and several holes with water. Despite it not being in the greatest condition, I enjoyed playing here and will visit again. The staff consisted of one young man checking people in at the clubhouse and he was very friendly and helpful when I called for directions. I only had a bottled water, that is why no rating for food.
Beautiful Course
It was our first time playing on this course and we really enjoyed it. The scenery was amazingly beautiful!!! We will definitely be back soon!!
Great course when it gets back to its former glory
Course only reopened about a month ago after a 18 month period of no maintainense. Greens are very soft and young feeling though they are not new. I player this golf course about two years ago and it was excellent I hope it returns to its former glory soon.
Doing well
The course has been shout down for a few years and has just recently reopened, the greens were sanded and you could tell they have done a lot to the fair ways and around the greens to get it going in the right direction again. this use to be one of the best courses in North Carolina, with that said ,we went there to play in support of there reopening, cant wait to go back in a month or so.
Course is under repair
I like the course layout. The course has been closed for over a year and not maintained. The greens are in poor condition due to lack of maintenance over the past year. I am glad that Clegman has reopened and look forward to playing it again when maintenance has brought it up to good condition.
Good to be back!
My buddies and I couldn't be more thrilled to be back at our favorite track.
It's clear the staff and ownership is committed to returning Cleghorn to its full potential. Every club in your bag matters as you wind through the classic NC terrain.
I brought the wife and kids and dropped them at the pool :) Everybody won!
