Better hit it straight
Very nice course kinda hidden on 64
Value for dollar was good
No range or putting green a minus but otherwise very enjoyable experience
Awesome course
This is an incredible course. Beautiful views, Well maintained, friendly staff. It is not particularly easy, but that's mountain golf. It's important to enjoy the course while it beats you up a bit.
We had made a tee time in the afternoon and because of morning round went so quickly we arrived 2 hours early. They let us on anyway.
After go ahead and eat at the Brew Pub. I had the Salmon BLT.
NC Mtn Air is Great
Played Sapphire National. Weather was perfect, sunny, warm and slight breeze. The greens were sanded due to recent aeration but otherwise course was in excellent condition. I was surprised that the red tees were moved to closer locations and not always on a level tee box. Still shot my best round there of 102 not bad for a newbie.
This course is comparable to Smoky Mountain but more expensive
Hole #15 was the best.
Thought the playing prices was a bit high unless you got a discount thru GolfNow, then it is worth it.
Good Value Despite the Weather
My wife and I stayed right next door in a timeshare unit for a week, and watched it rain hard every afternoon for 4 days. When we finally played, it was cart path only, a demanding task for one with bad knees. This is a first class layout, unfortunately with an underfunded maintenance budget. Smartly, the money is being spent on the greens, which were excellent. The tees? Not so much. The fairways were behind in their mowing schedule, but were being mowed as we played through. The par 3s were exceptional, varied in length, challenging and picturesque. I am not a big fan of sharply elevated greens, and there were 3 or 4 to contend with. Overall, however, the course was a treat to play. I recommend it to most everyone, though it would probably be too much for a novice. What really would benefit this facility is an investor who'd be willing to fund the maintenance program. One last observation: the E-Z-Go electric golf carts had the best braking system I have ever experienced. That was money well spent.
Very disappointing.
I was looking forward to a great mountain course. Way over priced. This is a $30-$40 course max. It is normally $80, but I paid $60 thru Golfnow. Tee boxes were bare and the rough had not been cut for some time. Not well kept at all. No driving range or putting green. I will not be back.
Excellent Challenging Mountain Course
We played here 3 times and by the third we felt up to challenging the course. You have to take care to hit all the varied lies on this mountain course. The course elevation happily gave us about 10% more distance with higher shots than we were used to.The fairways, bunkers, and green were pretty good. I know the green side. Bunkers were good because I was able to easily get out of them!
The staffis friendly and helpful.
The only negative was the absence of a driving range and putting green.
BTW, they have the best hamburgers I've had in a long time!
A Great Mountain Course
This is a mountain course therefore lots of hills and valleys. Unbelievable views and beautiful course. Some challenging par 3's (lots of fun) and par 5's. Make sure you drink a 'Whisper Lake' lager after your round.
great mountain course
A great mountain course with super waterfall hole and a par three off the mountain with rock beside that is very challenging. In all fairness the course was having trouble with their mowers and the ruff was impossible 4 to 5 inches high and had not been cut in some time. Was US Open ruff or worse, could lose your ball 6 inches off the fairway. I've played it for 25 years and this was by far the most impossible situation I've ever encountered.
A new favorite
Truly the BEST hot deal I've ever scored on GN. Staff was helpful for a first time visitor. 8/10 for friendliness. (I always feel like the course workers resent GN hot deals). The course itself is mountain golf at it's best. The fairways are wide enough to where you do not feel pinched on every tee shot. Trees do line the entire course, but it isn't overwhelming to the eye and mind. Condition of the course could not have been better for the most part. Some fairways had longer grass on edges, but complaining about that is like complaining about the model with brown eyes instead of blue. Still a great course. Fairways 10/10, greens 10/10. Tee boxes 10/10. Bunkers were 10/10.
Quick hits: Par 3's are all beautiful. Most have elevation change to factor in on club selection. My son and I played a very slow pace for us and still finished in 4 hr 15 minute range. Honestly, we could've shave at least 30 minutes off but no one was behind us so we simply enjoyed the scenery and course.
I will play this course often. It is an hour away and well worth the drive. If you are in the mountains, you need to play this course. Definitely the best course I've played on GN and the best course I've played in North or South Carolina (including Myrtle Beach!)
Beautiful Mountain Course
This was the fourth time playing this course. It is a hour and forty five minute drive for us to get there. If it was closer we would probably play it at least once or twice a month. The course has challenging par threes ( island green fifteenth), slick greens and lots of elevation changes from tee to green. The Sapphire Brewing company is a great place to eat after your round. It's right in the club house and has great food and they brew there own beer.
Go play this course!
Wastn't going to play on this particular day. Found a hot time ($20!!!!!!) and read reviews. Jumped on the time and could not have been happier. Tee boxes 10/10 Fairways 9/10 some high spots on a FEW fairways, Greens 10/10, incredibly fast and undulating, not for the faint of heart! Rough is thick and punishing, better play smart and go with at least one club more when in the rough. Sand traps are very playable and much easier to get out of because of higher grade used. Holes 13 and 15 are fun and beautiful holes. Water fall on 13 splits fairway. Played to the right, not good enough to pin point a shot on the left. 15's island green is fun and challenging with elevation changes. The par 3's offer incredible scenery and most have extreme elevation changes to deal with, #2 yardage is 196 from whites, but plays 170. Only one par 3 is flat and it is across a large pond. The rest of the course plays up and down and is a very nice set up. We played in 4 hours and 15 minutes, could've pushed ourselves and played under 4 easily. I will play this course often and it is an hour away from me. If you are in the mountains of western North Carolina, you must add this public course to your list. Best course I've played from the beach to the piedmont to the moutnains, easily the best.
Perfect mountain course
This is exactly what you want from a mountain golf experience. Great use of terrain for challenge and views. All of the par 3s would be signature holes elsewhere. Even after three straight days of rain, the greens were quick. Only downside is lack of practice facilities. The brewing company on-site is a great option for 19th hole activities.
Better than it needs to be.
Sapphire National is one of the very few eighteen hole courses open to the public in the area. Ownership could get by with less and still have a money maker. Fortunately, SN has chosen to be far from ordinary.
The staff is friendly and accommodating. Course conditions are excellent. Some tee boxes showed wear and tear, but the fairways and particularly the greens were in excellent condition.
Our pace of play was acceptable. However, be aware that this is a course in a resort area and some inexperienced or infrequent golfers may be accepting the challenge of this difficult layout.
SN's Par 3's are the highlight of the course design. There are no cookie cutter holes. The elevation changes on this mountainside course are significant, but not severe. My tip: Try to stay below the hole. Putts from above the hole are dicey.
The restaurant attached to the pro shop offers an excellent view of the course. The staff is friendly and efficient. The menu sufficiently varied.
In my view, SN is easily a four star experience with an additional 1/2 star easily awarded. The ownership is to be commended for developing an extraordinary golf experience.
Awesome experience
Beautiful course. Very challenging and great beers and pizza after round.
Difficult but beautiful mountain course.
The course was in excellent condition. There had been 2 inches of rain the previous day, so it was cart path only, so had to do a bit more walking, but that was OK. The greens were tough to read, but receptive to incoming iron shots. Being in the mountains, there were of course a lot of ups and downs to the fairways, but to be expected. The views were beautiful. Overall, if you enjoy mountain courses, this one will not disappoint.
A tough course
Sapphire National is a very tough course. The greens are extremely sloped. The conditioning is okay.
Since it's one of just a few "public" courses in the area, it's not a "choice", but a "must play" if you want to play golf around here.
Nice mountain course
Very scenic views. Great shape. We will be back again.
Nice course, poor drainage
Cart paths only on a sprawling mountain course makes playing golf very difficult. Probably added 30 minutes to the round. Bad news if you have achy knees. Nevertheless, it's a very fun course with beautiful views. Very nice staff.
Nice Mountain Course
Course was in fairly good shape. Fairways were great, greens were a bit slow, but rolled true. Sand traps need more sand. Pace of play was slow, but not unexpected on a resort course in season.
