Winston lake
Winston lake...one of the nicest muni courses I've played. Fairways were nice...and the greens were smooth. Greens were slow...like incredibly slow but they did roll good. The rough is where they need to focus some time on. Whenever you lose balls rolling off the fairway into the rough is uncalled for. Literally took my dad and I more time to find our golf balls than to play the hole itself and it was the first cut. We each lost 3 balls each in the rough and came back out with around 30. 25 of the 30 we found were in the rough right off the fairway. Took 3 and half hrs for 2 people to play and we had the course to ourselves pretty much....and that was mainly trying to find our balls. You do have quite a few blind shots also so if you're not perfectly in middle...kiss your ball goodbye. The woman at the counter also washes the golf carts....holy smokes....I'd come there every day just to see her.
Highly Recommend
Great little public course. Well worth the money. Challenging and scoreable.
Hidden Gem!!
I typically play as a single and go out at any given moment. I discovered this hidden gem of a course about 6 months ago and it quickly became my favorite and go to course. Sometimes the pace is a little slow because so many people love to play there as well but when that is the case I’ll either play thru or join the group ahead of me. The folks who work there and the folks who play there are truly the best. I highly recommend Winston Lakes!
Shangrila
Loved it. Well kept, ppl were very nice. Manicured well.
Slow play and slow greens
The greens were super slow, the pace of play was awful. The foursome in front of us would not let us play through. There was no one in front of them. It took almost 4 hours to play the front nine. I will not be going back. I do not recommend this course.
Slow slow slow greens
I was paired with a great group. We had fun, however it took 3 1/2 hours to play the front 9. Slow play, the greens were like putting on Berber carpet. Slow and not true. I won’t be going back.
A hidden gem!
I played this course a lot 20 yrs ago...but hadn't played it recently. I was most pleasantly surprised! Layout is a bit tough (as I remembered); conditions were decent overall (rough was a little tall and in need of mowing...which they were doing on the day); but greens were the best I've seen in a good long while! And at this price point ($19), I can't imagine better.
Fine for the money
I like the course lay out. The price is among the lowest in town. It is a good place to practice.
The greens are very slow, which has been well documented. My only other complaint is the fringe grass is very high. You can actually lose a ball in the high grass, just a couple of feet off the fairway.
To be fair, it’s a cheap, public course, don’t expect it to be perfectly maintained. Once you gets past that, it’s a good value.
Over Grown
I know we have had a ton of rain lately. The greens were very fuzzy and slow . The rough was over grown with weeds etc. Still a good round and good value!
Slow slow slow
If you want to play slow greens then this is your course. Other than that course is in great condition. Try to stay in fairways though. You cannot hardly find it in the rough
Had to go play it again
So I don’t usually leave a review 2 weeks apart. But we played this course yesterday for the second time in 3 weeks. The greens and pace of play was my gripe. Well the greens were still slow but they are in good shape. They roll fairly true and the speed was much better. I went to the practice green and immediately was mad we came back. It was slower than last time. The course was not like this at all. I love the lay out of the course. Some tee shots need trees removed so you can get a better angle to hit. The driving range still has not opened but the people running it is super friendly! The guy at the grill was such a pleasure to talk to and food was not to bad either. This course does not get enough love. People should start playing it more and get this place back on the map. Well worth the price of green fees.
Mismanaged
I am sure this is a great course during the week day. I really enjoyed playing the course itself. It is horribly mismanaged though. Tee times are not respected. They had four groups waiting to tee off at once. Of course it was my tee time. Pace of play was awful. Every single hole had someone waiting on someone else. My brother and I played 9 holes in 3.5 hours. We paid for 18 but just couldn't stand waiting any longer and left. Really disappointing course during busy days
