Chardon Lakes Golf Course
About
Chardon Lakes Golf Course opened as a nine-hole course in 1931. The original layout was designed by Bert Way, the same creative mind behind two of the popular golf courses in Ohio: Firestone North in Akron and Mayfield C.C. in Lyndhurst. The second nine was added in 1963. The golf course has a traditional layout with challenges that have withstood the test of the time. It has hosted several qualifiers for the Cleveland Open, most recently in 2001. Many famous players have tested their luck on the golf course, including Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, whose score of 67 from the back tees is still the course record. Mature trees line Chardon Lakes Golf Course's fairways and there are more than 40 bunkers strategically placed along the large, undulating greens. There are also water hazards on 11 holes.

A Nice Sunday Stroll
Though the course boasts that it has the three toughest finishing holes which is a bit of a stretch, Chardon Lakes is worth playing. Te course is tight with smallish greens. Holes are challenging and require some thought about club choice. The greens weren't rolling as fast as the could (it had rained the previous day) but when fast, being above the hole could prove disastrous.
The final three holes are challenging -- a long dogleg left par 4, a very long par 5 with a green tucked up on a little hill, and a dogleg right par 4 which requires a precise second shot.
This course is designed so that the player who wants to walk can do so. After all, nine holes of it were designed before carts were an option.
Great Course!
Chardon Lakes was in great shape. The greens held and rolled true. I was people would repair ballmarks. The staff is great here. I was a single and played the front. The back nine was crowded so the marshal let me play the front again. Very playable from the middle tees but still very challenging layout.
Very well maintained course
Loved it. would recommend this course to others. the greens were challenging and well maintained. Surprising for the course fees.
Great old style course
A true isk/reward course. The rough will hurt you and the greens are fast. Good test of ability...
Good course to play. Fun short holes. Plenty sand traps to challenge.
Enjoy the course, nice par threes fun. Fairly good shape of course. Some paths rough terrain. Would play again with golf now prices.
Well maintained, kinda wish the greens were better though.
Tee to green this is a really pretty course and its in pretty good shape as well, The greens though leave something to be desired. When its firm and dry like it was the last time i played here they are not too bad. but when its wet and soft you see footprints everywhere and putts dont roll well at all. This can be attributed to not having any sand under the greens. I was here when they punched the greens in April and they did not topdress the greens when they punched, they put holes in the greens but didnt sand em which i was puzzled by, if the greens were better this would be a great course but the greens hold this place back.
Consistantly in good shape! A real test
Chardon Lakes is a mature golf course that is well maintained. It offers a variety of challenges for intermediate to advanced players – This is no place for newbies or high handicap golfers! The greens are normally lightning fast and coupled with the black tees, it’s truly a test for even the best players. I love everything about Chardon Lakes except slow play on the weekends. I strongly recommend this course!
Excellent Value for the Money
Very well maintained golf course...scenic, challenging course...very good pace of play...friendly staff...will come back again.
nice but slow
First the good.Course was in beautiful condition, even with recent heavy rains.Challenging but fair layout. Now the bad.It took an hour to play first three holes and close to five hours for 18,not sure why.Maybe they need a ranger to speed up slow groups. Will definitely play here again, hopefully pace of play will be improved.
Great course, overbooked.
I love this course, but slow play can be an issue. This most recent time was really bad. They completely overbooked the course or something, and it took us 1.5 hours to get through he first 2 holes. Every tee box there were 2 foursomes in front of us. We were on pace for a 9 hour round. Finally things started moving, but then stalled again around hole 15. On the par 5 number 17, there were 4 groups playing the hole at the same time - 1 on the green, one waiting for green to clear, 1 sitting at their drives, and us at the tee box. The total round was around 6 hours.
Barring these issues, it is a wonderful course. They keep it in great shape, its challenging, beautiful, and I will play there again. I just hope they fix the slow play issues for the future.
Great course all around
The pace was pretty slow on the front nine but picked up by the back. Overall the course was in great shape just wish that it would have been a little quicker.
Great course with challenging holes.
A few easy holes, but many with narrow fairways. You can use every club in your bag. It is a sometimes fun and sometimes frustrating course.
Well kept and a nice staff
Never played before, and would go back again. Course was in good shape. Greens rolled well but were very slow. This was probably because of the rain that came through over night. Course doesn't drain all that well, but it was maintained. Staff was very friendly. Pace of play was slow, but only because we had a group of duffers in front of us. Layout was varied; some open holes, tight holes, short holes, long holes. Not a huge variety but wouldn't call it one-note. Though the course is called Chardon Lakes, there is not a lake on the entire course, which I found odd. Rough was hard to hit through when wet. A good challenge without being overly difficult.
Tough from the back tees!
Very challenging from the black tees, but playable. Regular tees still very good. Very Nice course!
Will be happy to play there again.
Although there was nothing spectacular about this course, it was a very pleasant afternoon . Conditions were very good, long enough to be a challenge to me and flowed nicely from hole to hole.
One of the nicest courses in the Cleveland area.
I would put this course in the top 5 in the Cleveland area. It is very well maintained, not extremely difficult but definitely challenging and the green fees are very reasonable.
makes for interresting play if not hitting straight
The day started with a 2 hour frost delay,So play was slow.
None the less,The course was fun,And worth the time.
