Ballyowen Golf Club

About
Ballyowen Golf Club is an homage to the great Scottish links courses, the place where golf originated. The course sprawls across 250 acres of rolling farmland that overlooks the Walkill River. The layout tumbles through valleys and hills, staying as true as possible to the natural contours of the land. Much like a traditional links golf course, the virtually treeless landscape is accented with craggy knolls. The challenging layout features lush green fairways that contrast beautifully with the pristine white sand bunkers and golden patches of rough that border the greensides. There are also water hazards that come into play on five holes. Ballyowen has earned the title of New Jersey's top public course and Golfweek has even ranked it as one of the top 50 courses in the country.

Best public in NJ
Outstanding. Prices have increased steadily in recent years, but no more than anyone else in tristate. Amazing layout. Perfect conditions.
One of the best in NJ!
Just a great course with charm and character. Staff always the best!!
Needs GPS in carts
For $250 GPS needs to be added to carts to get accurate yardage
Also feels like pins are in same location every time I play
Course management needs improvement
Always love this course, but…. I had 2 major issues yesterday. 1, the greens had been micro plugged and there wasn’t a warning posted on golf now (aeration alert)
2, it took over 5 hours to complete the round due to an outing earlier in the day that brought the course to a standstill. I understand that these things happen but management needs to be forthcoming with this information so we know what to expect and can make a fair choice on where to play.
Excellent Links Layout
Greens had a slight dusting of sand which made them slower than usual, but playable
Had a 2.30 tee time just got in before sunset - pace of play could of been better and no rangers seen to push things along
Nice course but not worth the extra $$$
We were disappointed with the lack of gps in the cart, pace of play, $9.00 light beers, and that the beer cart needs to take your credit card to the clubhouse to open a tab. The only thing modernized here is the prices. The course was in good shape and challenging however the negatives didn’t make it feel worth double the fees of some nearby alternatives.
Premium greens fees, average experience
Course layout is great and and conditions were good despite the heavy rainfall of late, creating very wet conditions. Certain areas should have been roped off but were not resiulting in a lot of damage to the course. Half the ball washers are missing towels and those that had one were so dirty, torn, and tattered that they were unusable. Range doesn't have anything to clean your clubs off with. Just a lot of little things that they really miss the mark on for what they want to charge you in greens fees. Never feel like your getting your money's worth.
Premier Course, Horrific Pace of Play
Ballyowen is one of the best in NJ but Tuesday was just unacceptable.
Outing was scheduled from 9-1 which is absurd thinking four hours is sufficient time to clear the course for afternoon tee times. This led to a predictable delay to then experience 5 1/2 hour pace of play on a Tuesday afternoon. No cart restrictions either. Just a shame a beautiful course could allow that type of experience for its customers.
On the bright side, absolutely loved the thick rough which is rare on most courses. Wide fairways and thick rough is ideal and wish more courses were designed/maintained this way.
SLOW play
Course is nice, greens a bit beat up but thats on the dopes that dont fix ball marks. The main issue the day we played was SLOW play, at one point there was 4 groups on a par 5…after that hole a 2 skipped the par 3-we didnt see them for a while, that left a 4 and a 3 in front of us and it was hit, talk, look for a ball..front took 2.5 hrs-we skipped 10 (passing both groups) played 11-18 and then played 10 in less than 90 minutes, and that included catching the 2 that skipped the par 3 and waiting for them on 17, 18….we were a threesome and basically kept the ball in play….we played 2 extra holes and called it a day, packed the cars, had a beer at the bar, checked out the pro shop…as we were leaving the foursome was just finishing up….pathetic.
Perfect Fall Day
Invited my friend and financial advisor to join me for a round at Ballyowen. It was his first time at Ballyowen and he belongs to a private club. He raved about the course and the conditions and played a great round. I always look forward to playing the top public course in NJ. Well done to the staff and grounds keepers.
First Time at Ballyowen
Very impressed with the course. Absolutely beautiful and well maintained. Staff were helpful and polite. Cart girl Hannah was very pleasant and she makes a really nice Transfusion!
