Glendoveer - West
My buddies and I played Fri afternoon and the course was busy so it took us a little longer to play but not too bad. The course is in pretty good shape, not tight but decent. The greens are slower but that is good for the people just starting to play this wonderful game. I would play again.
What happened to Glendoveer?
we used to play this course A LOT then moved to a nearby suburban city. Played it for the first time in years. New electric carts were a HUGE upgrade over the old gas carts but everything else was a disappointment. 2" weeds on the tee boxes, every tee box. Poor conditioning, poor maintenance. This is why I play Stone Creek week in and week out. Great price and excellent conditions.
The Great Wide Open
I played the East Glendoveer course with a couple of friends. It's a great course for an average golfer because it's wide open so if you spray the ball right or left on most holes you won't lose it. Had a great time and would go back and play the East again or try the harder West course.
Green in great shape
Overall the course played nicely. The greens were in great condition, with nice speed. It was fun to set up for a certain break and speed and know that the green would be rolling true.
this course is in great shape!
would it be possible to put some real yardage markers out.like a pole for the 150 some thing i can see with out looking all over for markers!
Disappointment at Glendoveer
Slow play with no marshal to speed up the 4-some of slow ladies a couple groups ahead of us. The drink cart girl NEVER was seen once during our whole round. We had to run to the pro shop to get beverages. We eventually spotted her tucked away, parked hidden from players near holes 11 and 12 talking on her cell phone. Could have sold more cold drinks if she was doing her job!
Overpriced
If ya gotta pay 37.00 for 18 holes. The green sleepers (keepers) should at least change holes each day. It seemed that the cups had been in the same location for at least 3 days. Over a weekend I imagine that course is heavily played, and each cup was battered, bruised, and heavily walked on near the holes obviously.
I watched at least 20 putts in our group bounce out of their line as they approached the hole, as well as putts that would normally drop, lip out due to them being so worn out.
Don't charge that much if your not gonna maintain decent playing conditions.
A nice afternoon
We had never played the West before. We had played the East once. The west is rated much lower and is much shorter. Perfect course for the wife, especially the front nine. The greens are very large and were in very nice shape, especially considering the play they receive. A bit bumpy and need to be rolled, but not bad at all. The bunkers were in poor shape and inconsistent in sand, some were literally hardpan. We played as a threesome with two walkers, played 19 holes in 3.5 hours…. not bad at all. Yes, 19. We screwed up on 12 and skipped to 17 and replayed 12 and found our way. The back 9 is quite hilly, you will burn some calories if walking. A metro course and is quite noisy, something we rural golfers are not used too.. sirens and such. We had a nice time though. I recommend the course for beginners and couples.
A good course for practice
A fairly easy course, especially front 9. A good place for beginners to practice.
Glendoveer improving
This is the first time that I have played since the new management took over and the course has much improved. There is still work to do but it is getting there.
Nice course to play
Enjoyed the course and would go back another time.
Great shape
The course is in beautiful shape - the best I've ever seen it - especially for a public course. I haven't played here for a few years and had forgotten how steep the hills are, especially on the front 9 of the East Course. The hills are not a problem to play, but are challenging to walk, especially if you are over 50 or so. (Or younger and in less than good shape.) That's the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Play here, but get a cart. Unsure about the West Course, haven't played it for some time.
Always enjoy Glendoveer East
A beautiful Sunday Afternoon. This course has fairways lined with Huge Trees. there are a few hills which make walking a bit of a challenge or very good exercise. The greens could be a bit faster but I am going to do it again this week at Glendo East!
Not a very long course - par 71
Very nice all-around course, just a little short on the distance. We played as a four-some with no one in front of us on a Saturday at 2:30pm. The course was in good shape and the greens were even nicer. You do have to compete with a few soccer-golf players, but typical if they were regular golfers. I would recomend this course for just a nice, relax outting of gold and dont expect to be overly challenged.
Slow payers everywhere
The marshals need to be more agressive with slow groups and make them let faster groups play through. Someone should teach novice players how to fix a ball mark.
This course has been improved.
Now that Glendoveer has new management, they have invested money into the facility. New carts, updated driving range, new outdoor patio, new signs on the course. The greens were in excellent shape. Still a little construction going on in certain places but no issue.
Glendo West
Great value. Hardly anyone there day we played. Fairways nice enough to play it down. Greens in good shape. Tee boxes could use improvement. Joked around with staff and starters. GREAT restaurant, obviously W/ Ringside
Course has improved but still needs more
I've played Glendoveer East several times throughout the years, when it has been a City of Portland course, and now that it is under new management for the past couple years. All of the old mature trees, and steep uphill holes can make the course a lot more challenging than the course rating makes it seem. I have noticed that the condition of the fairways and rough have gotten much better, but the tee boxes and greens leave a lot to be desired. For the greens, the biggest complaint (and it's a big one) I have is that the holes seem to be really small. The regulation golf hole is 4.25" in diameter. The holes on this course seem to have the edges pushed in towards the hole on every single green, with the hole diameter seemingly about 3.5". I don't know if that's because of the rainy conditions, players before me messing up the holes, or the greens keeper doing a poor job cutting the holes. Maybe it's my imagination; I'm not sure. But golf is hard enough with regulation-size holes and this doesn't help the enjoyment of the average golfer. I would've given it 4 stars overall if it weren't for this issue.
two great courses have seen better days
Glen is facing challenges. Changes in management. Greens in poor condition(player abuse), ball marks, bad repairs if any. Dandilions everywhere on the West Side. I hope new management can address these issues and return Glendoveer to its previous glory days.
