About
Designed by Clyde Johnston and popular PGA Tour star Fuzzy Zoeller, the Island West Golf Club is a course built around natural marshland and follows the landscape presenting a rolling, tree-lined course.
As one would imagine a course with Zoeller's fingerprints, Island West in Bluffton was built to be a fun, entertaining play, and has succeeded in its mission. Playing to 6,803 with a 129 slope rating from the tips, it's a solid test for the skillful yet playable for the not-so skillful.
Water comes in to play on 10 holes here, so the bold will have many risk-reward opportunities. Accuracy off the tee is a must on many of the tree-lined holes, yet other holes feature wide fairways. Island West is exactly the type of course you'd imagine Zoeller being a part of, but Johnston's expertise also shines through.

Enjoyable 9 holes
Played a 9 hole warm up on the way into Hilton Head. Enjoyed it.
Nice course
One of the nicer budget friendly courses in the area. The greens need some work, but overall we loved it. It’s going into our rotation.
Challenging
Nice course layout with a good challenge. Needs more love. Greens were slow and bumpy. Tee offs need seeding. That being said, it was good value for money as we paid the twilight rate at 13:00.
Much Improved Course.
I had a very good experience playing Island West. Course conditions were much improved since I last played it a couple years prior to its closure. The staff was great. Course conditions very good. The new management has made some needed improvement with some more to come. Greens were rolling very well. I plan to return for more play in the future. Excited to see what the future brings. Glad to see the comeback as the course offers some challenging and fun play. .
Rough
We played after 2 days of rain so we expected the course to be wet. That did not have an impact of my review. There were many bare spots on the fairways and the greens. T boxes were rough and uneven with bare spots.
This comment was made almost 2 years ago. The course was closed for almost 3 years and has reopened under new management.. The Course is in great shape with all the work that has been done. Should give it a try.
Muddy Mess
Course should have been closed. Very poor drainage on many holes. Even the cart paths were impassable in some areas. Played it once three years ago after Hurricane Mathew and wasn’t impressed. Thought I’d give it another chance. Save your money.
Goat Farm
Played this facility in the past. Thought we would give it one more try. Totally disappointed. If Fuzzy Zoelller ever came back to look at his layout he would pull his name off of it. Never again....
very disappointed ,just top dressed over watered greens. cart paths, club house and most everything else needs some tender loving care!!! wound not recommend. left after 9 holes.
Horrible conditions. Worst bunkers I’ve ever seen. What do you expect for $28? Can’t believe this is a Brown property. Should have warning signs for bumpy cart paths.
Decent value for the money
We played today, staff were great, course in in Ok condition. There needs to be some money spent on the cart paths & club house. We liked the layout. Challenging but fair. Great lunch deal.
Course is in really rough shape
Have played here many times in past years. I took a group here today and was totally embarrassed. Greens are slow and not being maintained. Some tees have almost no grass. First cut rough is long and nearly impossible to find balls. Fairways are rough with lots of dead or dormant grass. Really surprised that the Brown group has let this course go downhill to this extent.
The only good news is that my group won’t ask me to make tee times or pick a course again.
Thanks for your review. Course is just now transitioning from Winter to Spring playing conditions with turf coming out of dormancy. Expect major improvements in playing conditions over the next several weeks. Not familiar with a seeding program for tees in warm climate grass.
