Group of 7 men did the "links on the lake" golf" package, playing, staying & eating (food at lodge good & reasonably priced) at the state park. Also played 2 other courses included with the package, Tara @ Monticello @ Savannah lakes village nearby. Jan, traci, joy & Jamie (Jamie especially helpful with weather concerns) all good to work with concerning details & questions. Course above average for a public state park course. Only issue is cart paths conditions because of tree roots. Recommend & hope to do again
Excellent couse
A state park owned course that is excellent. My only complaint would be that the greens were a little slow.
Great course
You may have to drive a little distance to get here but it is well worth it. The course is in great shape. The staff is very friendly. If there is one drawback it would be the cart paths. Very bumpy and broken asphalt. Could use some maintenance on them.
Fun course
Great course always in awesome shape .pace of play slow had 2 groups of 8 in front of me
Loud
They were running a tractor to mow on P5 #2. It was loud from anywhere on the front nine. Could hardly focus! Would have been real peaceful otherwise. It was so loud you could hear it from anywhere on course.
Hidden gem
Great golf course located on the lake. Good layout and hilly. Well worth the drive. The staff is always friendly and helpful.
Rude Course Marshal
We have played this course several times over the years, but the last time we played, an middle-aged man in a maintenance cart kept following us on the front nine. We thought it was strange he was following me and my wife and our friend. We had no clue who he was. When we tee-off the 10th hole, he came by and was very obnoxious saying "Don't you know the 10th hole cart path only." Since there was no sign on the Tee Box, we didn't know what he was talking about. He then gives us a hard time for apparently not reading a small sign in the club house that stated that. He then says we aren't allowed to hit any golf balls from the pine straw in the woods, we can have free drops back on the fairway if we hot a ball into the pine straw. Sorry, that's not Real Golf! The man never identified himself as to what his job title was....we assumed he was maintenance worker, but I guess he was a course marshal. The funny thing was, the two-some behind us had their golf carts on the fairway too....he just drove by them without saying a word! The course was completely dry and the fairways firm, it made no sense for any holes to be cart path only...but if you do that...put a sign on the tee-box! The greens were horribly slow and needed to be cut down considerably!
golf at the knob
had a great time-staff was nice and helpful-course was in great shape-have not played here since the 1990's-i am a senior and the course was set up well for us oldtimers=will definitely play here more often-
Road trip
I play this course two or three times a year. It's a beautiful course and play as well when it is not wet. Fairways and greens Or very nice when the course has not had too much rain.
fun course
First time there for me and my son and we will go again .We enjoyed the course and the people working there could not have been nicer
Course is in beautiful condition
Hickory Knob State Park Golf Course is a hidden treasure. It is very peaceful with no homes in site, no road noise, just thed sounds of nature and your club hitting the ball, and maybe your partner about his last shot.
Course is in superior condition and a real bargain pricewise, especially with GolfNow.
Great Course
Loved the course, layout was unique and lot of natural beauty. The greens were a little slower due to maintenance but still rolled well.
Awesome Scenery
This is a SC State Park golf course. The workers are mostly volunteers and extremely cordial. The course is next to the lake with plenty of trees, therefore during hot days the temp in the shade is cool. Most courses out in the open can get very hot.
Shaping up nicely
Grounds are in decent shape. Greens had been aerated in last few weeks which caused many issues with putting. Only issue I have with the course is the greens. Aeration not withstanding, the last two rounds we played here, the greens were exceptionally slow and spongy. They did reduce size of the greens within the last couple years, so I assume they did this to help hold approach shots, but it has caused the greens to be way to slow. Other than that, all good and we will be back to play in the future.
Nice Layout,
I enjoyed the round. The course was in good condition with the exceptions of the greens. Very rough. Very nice setting. Hope the greens improve, I would like to play it again.
First time I have ever left a golf course before finishing.
This used to be one of my favorite courses. It has gone down hill tremendously. The layout is absolutely perfect but the greens were garbage. They we like sponges I've never seen a green that felt like that. They over booked the course with tee times 8 minutes apart and pace of play was horrible. It took us 3 hours to play the front and played number 10 and waited 15 minutes on number 11 tee box. So needless to say we left. It's a shame because this course has so much potential
Hickory Knob State Park, SC
I have periodically played this course since the 1980s, and it is a beautiful and challenging layout. However, cutbacks in maintenance funding over the last two decades have really hurt the course's condition. In all fairness the Golfnow review did say the greens were aerated on 4/11, but normally a week later they're not too bad. Very little sand was used in top dressing them, thus the holes were very pronounced. Essentially, the greens were unplayable. Recommend you wait a full month after aerating greens before playing this course.
