South Riding Golf Club
About
South Riding Golf Club is nestled in the gentle hills of northern Virginia, enjoying a landscape of hardwood forests and grassy meadows. The course offers a variety of challenges but the fairways are wide and player-friendly and the greens can be tough in spots but overall they offer some room for error. The layout requires both strategy and skill, it is definitely not a golf course where you will be able to just "grip and rip it." The course pinpoints your weaknesses but it is still a fair test. South Riding Golf Club's eighth hole is memorable for its difficulty but it's an interesting hole sine there are many ways to play it. At 351 yards, the hole is a short but intimidating dogleg left that will tempt you to go over the trees. The fairway is generous but the saddle-shaped green is flanked with bunkers.

tee box
the fairways were full of dirt the rough was uncut and the tee boxes were awful
Rough
I love this course. But the conditions right now are rough. Every single tee box is destroyed. All either burnt out or not well maintained. The fairways are also in bad condition. Greens are decent. Bunkers great condition. Overall right now it’s not worth the 90$ ish for the round.
Avoid at all costs
I am literally writing this review while on the course. How do I have time to do that? Because I'm currently on pace for a 6 hour round. Waiting 10 minutes on every tee box with no course marshall to be found anywhere.
The atrocious pace of play aside, the course is in awful shape. Tee boxes are just dirt ground with no grass, fairways are dirt, and greens have weeds growing through them.
I paid $65 to play here and that was about $60 more than it's worth with these conditions.
DO NOT PLAY HERE
Oof
Tee boxes were almost entirely dirt. Rough was far too long and filled weeds/crabgrass. Pace of play was terrible especially for a weekday
Pleasant exurban course but in bad shape
If not for the bad turf conditions, this would be a pretty nice course, despite being routed through a housing development (not my thing). It's pretty straightforward although with a couple of short doglegs and holes where a big hitter might have to pull less than driver, and a couple of forced carries over marshy areas which I'm not a fan of.
The turf conditions are terrible right now. A few fairways have big patches of dry, cracked mud with no grass, I'm sure from the hot, rainy summer, and some of the greens have dead patches around the edges too. A few tee boxes looked like they were undergoing maintenance, but some were also in poor shape.
South Riding is Hurting
South Riding has been s a local favorite of mine but it pains me to say it's in really, really bad shape. Diseased grass tee boxes almost on every hole. Greens overrun with weeds around the first cut. It's been getting worse the last several years. This last round was not enjoyable at all. I will not be coming back until they hopefully get it back to acceptable conditions. The staff was great as always however. Given the pandemic and the amount of money they'll need to fix the course, I hope they can survive.
Below Average
The pace of play was great once we let a twosome, that was hitting into us, play through. The pro shop had 1 brand of golf balls. The breakfast sandwich was decent.
The course was in the worse shape I have ever seen course of this price...Unfortunately they lost a lot of groundskeepers due to COVID but the tee boxes barely had any grass on them. The rough was over grown by many inches. The tee boxes on the par three were even worse.
I played this course as a recommendation of it being a nice course years ago but it is not now. The course needs A LOT of TLC! It had also rained a lot recently which did not help the situation at all!
Worst golf course ever
This place is trash, looks like trash. I’m a good golfer who shoots in the low 70’s and this place is legit horrible. The ball gets plugged and the fairways and tee boxes are in horrible shape
What a shame!
Really love this course and the layout but man its in pitiful shape. Between the sorry "golfers" there that dont feel the need to repair a divot or a ball mark.....ever have really ruined this course. Wont be back until maybe next spring but this course is not taken care of by grounds staff or the golfers playing it. What a shame as it could be a great course to play if it were in better shape. Worst Ive seen in a while.
Course is a disaster
Course was in horrible shape. A small portion of the issue related to prior rains, but the vast majority of the issues did not.
Vast majority of tee boxes were dirt. Rough was crabgrass that hadn't been mowed in a couple of weeks. Numerous pooling puddles. Smell of raw sewage in places.
Disappointed
Picked based on reviews. Both rating and number of reviews. Large clumps of grass everywhere. Pot holes all over the greens. Literally dead tee boxes. I mean start over dead. No grass dead. Left after 13 due to the ridiculously slow play. Will not return. Oh and $65?!?! Highway robbery. Hopefully they spend that money on grass seed.
Mostly Good with Some Challenges
The course is generally in good conditions with some notable exceptions. A large number of tee boxes are in really bad shape. No grass, many divots etc. Having said that, nobody in our group had their feel slip due to it. The fairways were mostly in good condition with some major wet areas (due to recent heavy rains) which required us to move our balls. The rain also meant that some of the rough couldn't be mowed for a while so it was thick. Again, I'm sure the course will catch up when it dries out a bit. The greens were receptive and rolled very nicely which in my opinion, was the most important thing. Drink cart came by about three times during the round. I'd go back again at the $58 rate I paid.
Good Round
I got teamed up with 2 other singles. None of us knew each other but we were all good golfers and enjoyed our round together. Staff was great!
Has potential
The course was in rough shape this past weekend. The fairways were green but there were a lot of swampy areas on them and around the greens. I had more than a few plugged balls during my round. The tee boxes were either completely dead or so swampy that it was tough to find a good area to tee off. One of the holes, number 2 I believe, had so many cicada killer hornets on the box that we moved to a different tee.
The bright spot for the course conditions were the greens. Although they have tons of ball marks (looks like not a single person fixes their marks when they hit the green), and were over-watered and soggy in many areas, they are green and rolled pretty true when you didn't have to putt through a ball mark.
Overall, this course is in bad shape compared to some of the others in the area. Especially when you consider that for $10 or $15 more per round you can play a really nice course.
Tee boxes are terrible
The tee boxes are terrible. Many of them are down to dirt and sand. Hard to find a good spot for tee shot. Wait till the Fall to play this course.
