Best in the area
I am a member here, and I play regularly. For some reason, there are three golf courses in this tiny town, and none of them are amazing. Ironwood is the best one by far both in conditions, amenities, and everything else. The course is not that challenging, but presents a new challenge every play. There is a great mix of four par threes, five par fives (I may be wrong in that) and par fours. The fairways are not super well cut nor are the greens and the tee boxes are scratchy, but it still is the best around. The off course amenities include a fully stocked pro shop, restaurant, pool, tennis courts, and driving range. All in all, Ironwood is a good club with a nice course that could use better keeping. (If looking for a great course, try birdwood or boars head in Charlottesville)
Stinks!
Driving through Staunton, VA on our way to Charlotte, NC, I asked my wife if she would like to play this course since I saw on I-81 on our way to the hotel. Called before going and the lady indicated if you play quick, we would be delighted to play late in the afternoon. After getting there, we were surprised by how pour the conditions were. Tees were very rough, fairways were not cut at all, greens were in just OK shape. They were slow. Can't figure out why they were in such horrible condition. Was told by a member that they do not have a superintendent. But that is no excuse for such horrible conditions. Fairways were extremely high. Par 5 in front had water on the right side of the fairway which leads me to believe there was bad drainage. Now I also am trying to figure out why the signs on the holes say "Country Club of Staunton". Paying $26.00 for 9 holes is outrageous. The least they could have done was alert us to the bad conditions. I don't think the lady in the clubhouse knew enough about golf to understand that conditions sometimes will bring golfers back to their course. I would not recommend anyone playing this course until they explain all of the problems they are going through. Bad! Bad! Bad!
Fun course
I played here last year twice and I plan to go back. It was a really fun layout with beautiful scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The greens were average speed and in good shape, but if one got above the hole they could be very fast. It is not a super high-end course but it was just a really fun day in a great setting. My out-of-town friends from the Midwest still talk about it.
member guest
played Ironwoods member guest a few weeks ago and just loved the course. lots of challenging holes that require long irons and utility woods. The greens were awesome!!
shame I'm not younger, full family membership only $85 if you are < 40 years old???
Excellent Course and in Great Condition
Excellent layout and in almost perfect condition. The greens were in great shape and slopes in the greens are a challenge--stay below the hole!
Fairways, tees and bunkers all in great shape and just a fun course with excellent views of the mountains in the background. Pleanty of beautiful trees line the fairways so straight tee shots will be helpful.
The holes had good variety of up and down hill and with holes that go left and right--you will get some side hill lies. We played blue tees and a friendly challenge withs some longer holes and some shorter.
The Club is located just off of I 81 (adjacent to a hotel) and apparently a private club for many years and now accepts some limited outside play...enjoy!
Solid Valley Course
The Staunton Country Club, now called Ironwood is a solid test. The course is in good condition and greens run true. The par fives are all of a solid length to make scoring even more challenging and there are no gimick holes. If you havent played it yet, the circa $40 green fees is a fair price for a good local track.
