Whispering Firs Golf Club
About
Whispering Firs Golf Club is one of two courses operated by Joint Base Lewis McChord. The other course, Eagles Pride, is located southwest of Whispering Firs. Designed by Bob Baldock in 1962, Whispering Firs opened on what was then McChord Air Force Base and later became part of Joint Base Lewis McChord. Though it's a military golf course, it's open to the public but don't forget to check in with security at the visitor's center. The layout features well manicured fairways lined with mature trees and challenging rough. The small greens demand accuracy and are made even more difficult with strategically placed bunkers framing the edges. There are some tough doglegs that require conservative play, and water hazards come into play as well. Whispering Firs Golf Club will test a variety of skills but it's not an overly punishing course. Players of all skill levels will be able to enjoy a round here.

Tight Fairways!!!! Photo submitted by stanfordbstallings on 04/03/2013
the courrse is ok
would go there and play the next time I would recommend this course to anyone wants to have good time. Course is on McCord base take a while to get in if you don't have pass.
Nice course
Had fun.. Played quickly..remember that you will need to get a visitor pass to get on the base and play
Course is very player friendly
Very enjoyable experience. Greens were taken care of. Course was very clean and rivals some of the more expensive in the are. Restaurant was Mexican and the food was excellent.
lots of trees if you miss hit
always enjoy playing whispering firs. It is a moderately hard course with a few challenges such as No 11
some hole is very differcult to get a par!
great value for the money,
very easy to work with staff,
green's are bit slow, some area in fairway's are needing some attention. some area is lot softer than some areas.
good practical course.
Great course for the cost of green fees!
For an average player, it's a great course! I wished if there were more hazards and OB's, which I didn't see any! And greens, it could be little, actually much faster than they are!
Great course
Enjoy playing this course. Some challenging holes.
Nice round, but long.
We enjoyed our round here a lot. Challenging but playable for even us high handicappers. Be advised! If you book a round here remember two things: First, its a military base. You MUST stop at the visitor center to get a daily pass onto McCord. Secondly you MUST tell the staff at the visitor center that you are a GolfNow reservation. We almost didn't get on base because the golf shop wasn't told we had a time thru GN and they said they had no tee time reserved. Also we played on Father's Day and the course had a couple of tournaments booked which is why our pace was so slow. I'm sure the normal pace would be 4:15-4;30. Go...enjoy the course and their very reasonable cost.
The greens used to be true like Ft Lewis but they seem to cater to the muni hackers now.
Very disappointing, this WAS a wonderful course years ago but now marginal at best. Fairways undistinguished, greens slooow & bumpy, tee boxes hairy. Base Commander must not be a golfer. The course played the same last year.
course was in great shape
one of the more challenging courses I have played so far this year.
Went as a single, staff and group that I played with were very friendly. Weather was super!!!!!Will surely book another tee time to play again soon. Never had to wait on any holes, good 4 hr round.
Great course but bad timing.
I reserved a tee time but when i got there there was a mens group teeing off. I eventually had to start on the back nine 20 minutes later. Call course before you reserve a tee time, women's group on Tuesday and men's group on Wednesday. They should block off these times from being reserved if they know they have events scheduled. Management issues. Will go back. Enjoyed course as always.
Great bang for the bucks
the course is very pretty and challenging, excellent staff. The only problem is that the greens were not cleaned off, lots of pine needles on the greens, impossible to make accurate putts. I hope that this is a one time oversite!
good course for money
the course was in good shap overall ,but greens need a little work. But was fun time.
Some Questions
I haven't played this course since "98. Today I played poorly, so I'm not sure if my criticism are reflective of my poor play or course conditions or maybe course playability? Lots of dog legs, mostly right to left making slicing a big no no. Greens with a little attention could be very good. 18 green is in bad shape with lots of dead spots. Fairways were a bit thin. Overall course is just barely good. Staff could be better as "starters" and maybe a smile or two. I would recommend, but not a top ten fav.
Tight fairways, relaxed atmosphere
Make sure to get there early. You have to go to the visitors center outside the gate to register your vehicle and a background check. It took about 20 minutes. So if you have warrants pick a different course:)! Course was very cool! Lots of huge trees and traps, wicked dog legs. Greens were just sanded so in a month it will be scary!!!!
great deal, dry course
the day we played 1/8/13 it was wide open. Nobody there, maybe because if the minor hassle of getting a security clearance. The course was dry and in great condition. The drive from North Snohomish county was a pain but well worth it.
Thanks,
Gary M.
for the $$ nice course very nice staff
Nice course, pace of play is good. Course holds up well for winter time will be back
One of the best courses in Western Washing
The only negative about playinjg Whispering Firs golf course is having to stop at the main gate to get an entrance pass. But that is a plus because when the Air Force controlled the gate, no one got on but military. This course is one of my favorites in Western WA. It is not as difficult as Eagle's Pride (Ft. Lewis) but it is still vey challenging as I found out when I got an "11" on holes #5 and 6. Course was in fantastic shape given all the rain we have had this month. I am really glad they joined the Golf Now program.
what a joke!
