Whispering Firs Golf Club
About
Whispering Firs Golf Club is one of two courses operated by Joint Base Lewis McChord. The other course, Eagles Pride, is located southwest of Whispering Firs. Designed by Bob Baldock in 1962, Whispering Firs opened on what was then McChord Air Force Base and later became part of Joint Base Lewis McChord. Though it's a military golf course, it's open to the public but don't forget to check in with security at the visitor's center. The layout features well manicured fairways lined with mature trees and challenging rough. The small greens demand accuracy and are made even more difficult with strategically placed bunkers framing the edges. There are some tough doglegs that require conservative play, and water hazards come into play as well. Whispering Firs Golf Club will test a variety of skills but it's not an overly punishing course. Players of all skill levels will be able to enjoy a round here.

Great course
I always enjoy playing this challenging course. The par three's are great, and the finishing hole par 5 is beautiful , viewing the club house from the top of the hill after a good drive! I will play it again and again! Lovely course!
Poor over all
Rough was to high. Lost ball 2" to 5 ft first cut. Greens fast, bumpy, lots of holes all greens. Will not play again this year. Manager seemed not to care. Very slow play.
This course has superb value
Nice weather, superb value, a game of golf with someone you love to play with, what more can you ask?
great course well worth playing had a great time
this is a great course I would recommend this Course to anyone; it has great features and fairways were in great condition. management was very helpful in allowing us to have a great day thank you.
This course HAS SOME LONG P4S
LIKED THE COURSE LAY OUT AND I WILL PLAY IT MORE TIMES
Views of Mt. Rainier and faster greens for the winter/fall season.
The course has been fighting bumpy and slower greens all year but punched about a month ago and they came back beautifully. They are rolling fast and true and the course is playing tough in this weather with the wind, cold, etc. The restaurant, Habeneros, is still one of the best meals you will find at any golf course and they have a very good Pro Shop. Jeff Clark manages the course as Director of Golf.
Great course for the money
Course very well maintained even with weather issues
Great challenging course.
Old school course cut amongst the towering firs. Ball placement of the tee is paramount on several holes. Several doglegs, mostly left. Great course especially for the price. Be sure to bring your ID and if driving yourself proof of car insurance and registration. Its on the military base, no exceptions.
Long with a lot of trees. It can be a challenge,
Play it during the summer.
Played it on a cold, windy, fall day which made a challenging course even more difficult. Greens were buried in leaves & pine needles. Rough was LONG. Shots wandered in the wind. Survival golf. Yardage lost to the cold made long holes play longer.
I want to go back during the summer...it'll be an entirely different experience and still challenging.
Awesome staff!!
Have played this course for over 15 years. Never fails to impress. Even with a packed schedule, the time spent was well worth the money. Would continue to play Whispering Firs for years to come.
nice course, lots of trees, snack bar and range
this course has some long par 4s and some short par 4s. It is well kept. Amenities are good.
Requires check in at the main gate of McChord AFB for a pass onto the base.
I would like to try this course again, under better playing conditions.
I played this course when it was fogged in. Was very difficult to see even 50 yards down the fairway. Unless you could hid your ball exactly down the middle of the fairway and the fairway did not bend you would have problems finding your ball. The rough was very deep, up to 6 or 8 inches in some places, making it very hard to locate your shot if you were off line. Not being able to see the green if you were more than 50 yards off, made it difficult to pick your shot.
solid military course. must be aware of the military base restrictions
Nice, but rather long, playing course. Greens were well maintained as were the bunkers. Two holes not my favorites. Number 9 and number 16 are doglegs that feel like that they have a more than 90 degree dogleg.
Pleasant old style golf
Your typical old school golfing with no memorable holes. Greens are very slow. Fairways lined with trees and a few holes next to roads, which I absolutely dislike on a golf course! From blue tees, 6700 yds is a little challenging, but better players will find it lacking. I played with a 3 wood and shot 81, due to greens being sanded. No water holes or any interesting features. Guess that's why I saw no one playing and a 3-1/2 hr round walking was brisk. If you live nearby, don't like crowded courses, pay less than $20/round, and don't care for scenic, exciting holes, give it a try. Better players will be bored after 2 holes. This has to be the most boring course around! So if you have a few hours to kill, and just want to work on your game, it's a good "practice" course...
Fun course
The course was in great shape. Fast but fair greens.
Beautiful tree lined course. Nice greens
I have played this course about 10 times previously and my golf partners and I love the course. Huge trees, nice fairways and greens. Course is a flat layout so easy to walk. Recommend this one to all.
Wildlife and big trees, very fun and quick Saturday play.
New course for me. It's got lots of big trees (hence the name) but most of the brush has been removed in areas where an errant shot might fall so you can find and hit your ball. Still it pays to stay in the fairways. Plenty of distance and lots of dog legs make it interesting, decent sand in the traps. There is a fair bit of shade so some of the greens had some moss and the recent rains left a few soggy areas but all in all, very enjoyable and easily walkable. You'll need to stop at the visitor center to get a pass to get onto McChord so bring ID for everyone and registration and insurance for the driver.
Course has large fareways and greens
Getting through base security took some time. Staff at the course did not have a record of our prepaid tee time. If I didn't have a printed copy of my online booking we may have had to pay at the course too. The printed copy of the email from Golf Now with a confirmation number was not acceptable proof of online payment to the course staff. I have never had this problem at other courses I have prepaid through Golf Now.
This course has great staff.
Nice, older course on post at JBLM, adequately maintained, best feature is friendly staff!
