Hard to follow holes
Cart was great with ice chest for drinks. It had on board guidence for where cart should not go. I wish it had guidence to next hole. The front and back holes run through each other. First restroom and water at hole 8. Course a real challenge with most tees over cactus and scrub. Some tees you had to go over or around large Saguaro cactus.
As Usual
The course and especially the staff were top notch. Always grab a tee time here if you can!
Solid Shape for Summer AZ Golf
Overall the course is in great shape. Greens all over Arizona are probably a little hairy due to aeration, but AZ National’s are as good as you’ll get right now. Smooth but slow. Give it 2-3 weeks and this course will be in top shape.
Great Course but the Weather !
Always play this course, don't let the straightforward layout fool you. RT Jones, Architect has you playing with elevated greens. I hoping that patchy fairways will grow right back. Still enjoy playing.
Az national
Course always fun. Greens were aerated likely 1-2 weeks prior but had only subtle impact on score. I’d go back for sure.
Very good for hot summer conditions
Fairways and tee boxes were surprisingly good for summer conditions. Some greens were a little bumpy from aeration but generally good. Stay out of the bumkers - some are ok and some are not (lack sand). Great layout! Holes have a lot of variety and plenty of challenges.
Hot summer golfing
I always enjoy the course for my practice time and actual play. Great staff, layout and the condition is always good. But right now the hot summer heat is ringing some challenges. All in all a fun golf course to play.
Not worth the price, even in the middle of the summer pricing
This was my second time playing. Typically I can't afford a course like this, but this time of year these courses are in my price range.
I played another top tier course on the west side on Tuesday, then this course on Wednesday. I’m not supposed to name other companies or courses in this review. But let’s say there’s a resort hotel nearby and they have 27 holes (3 9-hole courses). On Tuesday I paid about $35, then this course for $45. The course on the west side is in much better shape, not even close.
My issue with this course is only the condition of the course itself. The staff were very nice and it's a nice clubhouse. But the condition is horrendous. And not just the greens (aerating).
Yes, they are aerating and sanding the greens, but if so, then lower the price to $30. I guess if the rest of the course were not so bad then sure, $45. But it’s not only the greens. The rest of the course is in dire need of upkeep and repair. Especially the bunkers. They clearly are not maintained and haven’t been for a while. There’s definitely no daily raking being done, probably not weekly, possibly monthly, but doubtful. They just look ignored. No deeper dredging being done, they have not be replenished with actual sand. Let’s face it, it’s dirt, with rocks, pebble, stones. It’s Arizona dirt and it's neglected dirt. I am not exaggerating on this point. The city courses have better bunkers. The tee boxes, the fairways, also bad. The fairways have lots of black spots, not sure if that's death or disease or both. Lots of dry, hard patches. I expect better conditions from a top-tier course. Again, it was like at the city courses. And I’m not bashing the city courses. I love our city courses, a great value and resource for the community. But they get much more play and have a smaller budget, Arizona National is in no better shape.
I know it's no easy task to maintain a course, but the city courses are in better shape. It was a waste of time and money. Not a good value and that’s what it comes down to. You get more for your money at other courses in town. I wanted to try something different, big mistake. I will not return to this course, ever.
Tough but Fun Course
Amazing course layout and location. Staff was friendly and very helpful. A Robert Trent Jones designed course, I believe, challenging and loads of fun but you better have a game. This did not play like a beginner course. Picturesque views, elevated tee boxes, tight fairways well placed hazards make this course a whole lot of fun but will put your game to the test. The only issue was the punched fairways and they were reseeding as well, typical this time of year but we knew going in. Lift, clean and place rule made it better. I can’t wait to play it again when it’s in awesome condition! Definitely one of the best I’ve played in Arizona so far.
