DeBary Golf & Country Club

About
DeBary Golf & Country Club, a Lloyd Clifton-designed course sits on hilly land. The layout is fascinating. No two holes feel similar. Only two holes have water, but there is significant sand. Dense woods of pine and evergreen border the fairways. The rolling fairways and natural layout give the golf course a Carolinas feel. The par 5s are all in the 500- to 550-yard range. The par 3s are all approximately the same distance, running 180 to 190 yards from the back tees, and 150 to 160 yards from the white tees. DeBary is one of the few Clifton golf courses that do not top out at more than 7,000 yards.

Course was a good condition
We enjoyed playing the course. Greens were great and so was the course
Recovering Nicely
The course has had to recover from recent storms, but has done so nicely. It’s a good mature layout with its challenges, but is fair. They are currently refurbishing the traps and areas of the fairways. Worth the play.
Upgrades!
The course has a lot of work going on, but it doesn't interfere with your round. Let's hope they don't price us out after the improvements are finished.
Nice course, if…
I really loved the layout, it was fun to play. However, the irrigation left course conditions quite swampy with several holes being cart path only, they left this fact out after we paid. Also, the pace of play was probably the worst I have ever experienced, with several groups in front and behind us. What normally would have been a 3 hour round for a 2-some turned into a 5 hour round.
Poor Conditions & Rude Staff Member
I’ve played this course many times and have always had a great experience with both the staff and course quality, however the current conditions (due to flooding and replacement of bunkers on Holes 1-9) really make it difficult to enjoy playing, especially with no price reduction. Also, one rude staff member ruined our round by accusing us of hitting someone’s vehicle with a wayward drive off the 18th and telling us that ‘somebody was lying to him’ despite none of our group being responsible.
Things we didn't know detracted from our experience
To start, let me say this is a good course and the upkeep is first class for the price range.
The fairways were consistent and 99% filled in with grass. The greens were very good, especially if you like very fast.
There were two aspects that should be (1) reflected in the price and (2) explicitly warned about/explained at check in or by the starter.
(1) is that there was significant flooding on the iconic holes 9 and 18, which pretty much ruined the second shots on these holes. We played the water as casual, but we should have been told about it.
(2) Also, on several holes on the front there was bunker renovation going on, including large areas around the bunkers (which also created a large new "pond" on #1.
We weren't sure what to do with these but treated them as ground under repair.
For someone who often likes to run balls up to the greens, these two problems forced me to change my game and hit shots I don't normally hit. Definitely affected my score, while not being reflected in the course ratings.
Coarse going thru renovations plus water damage from storms. Working on it which is good and better than other courses.
Poor Starter/Course Management
Course layout was good but that’s about the only thing positive. Came in and paid for 18 and the range got to the range and was told by the starter we had to go out and play by ourselves or had to wait an hour to go out after a 4 some and a 5 some, said we would go out and then as we are teeing off starter sent an older gentleman who while was fun to chat with significantly slowed down pace of play. Ended up waiting for a majority of shots. I had called to get a gauge of course conditions before going and was told it was a little wet but completely playable. In reality 6-7 holes had spots completely unplayable due to water and a majority of holes had sand pits being completely redo Ethan . Not worth 60$ to play 18 maybe 30$. Tried to get a refund for the range for being essentially forced to go out early and got a paper stub for a free bucket. Will not be back.
Still wet
Great course but still a lot of standing water from hurricane
Course conditions
The greens and fairways were in good condition where there was no flooding. Understandably the course was still under water from the hurricane in several places that had an impact on play. With the current water issue course fees should be reduced until the water recedes and the course gets back to “normal” conditions.
Shouldn’t be Open Yet
The first hole is basically a lake. 5-10 holes are completely unplayable because they are still under water. They didn’t mention it at all online or when I checked in. No discount was given.
Don’t waste your money.
Bring your bathing suit
The overall condition of the course is fair and I would return during the dry season, however the back 9 was closed entirely due to flooding (which is not reflected on golf now) and majority of the holes had substantial flooding on the front 9 rendering parts of the fairway unplayable and completely saturated.
Great Layout
Debary has a great layout and very friendly staff. The green were recently airiated to promote news growth. There was some minor flooding which did not interfere with normal play.
Worth a visit
First time playing DeBary CC. The staff were pleasant and the small practice area was adequate. Carts did not have GPS. Ice machine did not work well nor did the water dispenser-not great during a heat advisory.
The course was nice. My only complaint was the tee boxes needed attention. Did not see any coolers of water on the front nine, but several on the back.
Fairways are nice and greens roll on the quick side and are a bit tricky. Keep it in the narrow fairways to score here. Lots of OB on both sides. The fairways are not always flat so an otherwise great drive can kick OB if it’s dry.
I will play it again-fun, challenging course.
