The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
They're doing so many good things at George Dunne. The course is really well manicured and the staff is some of the friendliest I've come across anywhere. The greens roll true and the course plays very fair. That's the good.
The bad is that I've played this course a few times this year and it is always just completely soaked. And I mean SOAKED. I can't remember the last time it rained and yet the fairways are just puddled and give zero roll. It's lift, clean and place depending on how early you play.
The ugly, they can't control too much and that is that there is some really really bad golf being played on this course. Like some other reviews have pointed out the pace of play can be slow. But in a time where courses are struggling to stay open, it's nice to see a course as busy as it is. Just keep that in mind if you're one of those guys who can't appreciate the game growing and insist on playing your 18 hole round in an 1:45 min.
Love Dunne !!
Good value. Staff great!!!
Some of the bunkers were hard packed.
It's a gem and always recommended.
Avoid at all costs!
This is a course for hacks who want to play six+ hour rounds. A great course ruined by poor conditions and an astoundingly horrible management team. I play here about three or four times each summer, but today was my last time ever. I was in the second group off this morning. We were barely playing nine in two hours and YET on the 8th hole we were told to SLOW DOWN by a ranger because the course had scheduled people going off the 10th tee until 8a! They anticipated the first group was going to play the front nine in 2:15! If you want your first group off to play in no less than 4:30, it's no wonder that six-hour rounds are the standard here. We had to leave after 16 holes when our round crossed the five-hour mark (for the second group off of the day!)! I'll never play here again.
South side Gem
Challenges all your skills. Lots of fun
Water water everywhere
I really enjoyed the course. You can take nothing for granted. Very crowed even though it was extremely hot outside. overall good day.
Water logged
Booked a $50 Golf Now rate as a single for a 5:56am start. There was a highway road closure from an accident and the staff was very friendly when I called and was able to get paired with a twosome when I arrived. Unfortunately the round was after a heavy night of raining so the course was very water logged. Lots of staff out pumping bunkers and getting rid of standing water.
Nice greens, rolled well. Lots of bunkers to defend approaches, in good shape on later holes as things started to dry out. Even with my standard heavy fade, the fairways were generous.
A nice challenging course, even from the white tees. Played in about 4 holes. Would definitely return of the price was right.
Hi Lonnie, we are really glad to hear you enjoyed your round and that our staff was helpful and didn't allow traffic to get in the way of your round. The course is clearing quickly from recent rains and we hope you come back to enjoy another round soon!
A must play!
This course is simply fantastic. Sand traps are overwhelmingly large. Some greens are massive also. Trick to this course is to not play from left or right of greens as all greens are narrow. Stay short and chip up hill. The golf boards seem to really speed up play and i will more than likely rent one next time.. had a great Replay deal.. played 36 holes. great time. Hole 6 is one of my favorite par 5s.
Its always great to hear that people enjoy the course and layout. We might be a little biased by we love George Dunne a lot as well. Hope to see you out here again soon!
Sporty and tough, the "Dunne" offers challenges for all!
On a muggy but not -too-oppressive summer day, my friend and I caught a GolfNow Hot Deal on the spur of the moment and dashed over the George Dunne, easily the best course in the near-to-Chicago south suburbs. Dunne has always been a fave tract, with lots of sporty, picturesque hole layouts, fair - but at the same time "tight" tree-lined - fairways, ginormous doglegs and strategically placed water with forced carries, and plenty of real estate available for the big hitters from the back tees.
As senior citizens, our group opted for the "whites" - although at a length of nearly 6200 yards is a supreme test for us elderly distance-challenged folk. One suggestion - the course needs to add a set of true "senior" tees - let's call them the "green" tees - and set a distance of 5800 or so - chop some length off the longer par 4s. The 3s and 5s are just fine from the whites as they are and could easily be used as "greens" also. The forward tees, are too short at 5400 for this purpose.
Condition-wise, we had a 90-degree cart rule due to almost an inch of rain the previous night and there was some standing water in the low spots and in the traps. Traps could use some attention, especially on the back 9. A new supply of sand would be very helpful. Otherwise, condition was great - except as mentioned for some softness in places of the fairways, which inhibited roll a bit. Rough still hard though, and contributed to stray drives rolling OB or into lateral hazards.
Overall, a great day on the links. Very friendly and helpful starter. Started 15-minutes late, but no real hold ups once out there. The course difficulty often triggers some lengthy rounds at Dunne - although this one was finished in about 4 and 20. Tasty, large hot dogs at the clubhouse for a reasonable $4. Dunne also started offering solo electric carts for the single player that wants something between a sitting cart and walking.
George Dunne is a good value, especially as a $30 Hot Deal. If you see it - snatch it up! Be sure to allow enough time though - there's always a fully booked tee-sheet and it's not a course you can rush thru. Take your time, shoot accurately, and enjoy the setting. Most days you can spot some wildlife, especially deer, along the way.
Great course
Took my son with me who plays on his college golf team. We played very early on Saturday. Course was in perfect shape. Play was exactly 4 hrs as we were paired with another twosome that were good players. At over 7200 yards this is one of the fairest but tough tests you can play. Great variety of holes. Used every club in my bag.
Excellent course for a forest preserve park course
The title speak for itself it is an excellent course for a forest preserve park course, well maintain, and a challenge course. Bring lots of balls and your good sand wedge cause there are a lot of them and also water than somehow magnitize your ball.
Excellent course
Really an excellent course with well designed holes, and the conditions were quite good for a course owned and maintained by the Forest Preserve. The classic, un-cramped parkland setting greatly enhanced the experience. Only downside was the pace of play (5+ hours), although that was somewhat understandable given it was a clear, comfortable Saturday.
Baby steps
The course has always been a superior layout with
Fluctuating conditions. I have played it at least once a month during golf season since it opened. I love the course but hate to wait for those who are overmatched and then play the back tees. 5+ hour rounds suck. The staff is always courteous and helpful. Wish they would push the pace a bit more.
4.5 hours should not be a pipe dream.
Geo Dunne Great Course
The course was in great shape We really enjoyed our round and are looking forward to coming back
Great track!
The course was in fabulous condition! Had a great time!
First time
Teed off at 916 and played in a 4.5 hours on the 4th of July. Course is is pretty good shape overall. Rough is not watered and pretty dried out. Overall course layout is great. Have some cool holes with good risk/reward option. Lots of bunkers on this course, most were in pretty good shape. Lots of trees, but fairly forgiving / wide fairways make it playable. No houses on this course, and the holes are spaced out, really nice, many holes you cannot see any other golfers unless they are in front or behind you. Gives it a country club feel. They have Golf Surf Boards which are pretty cool. Greens not overly fast but seemed to roll pretty true. Range had mats - not the best
This is a great course and great layout
Have played here many times over the years and love the course. Course conditions were okay, bunkers have improved but could still use some more work and cart paths need work. Staff very friendly and helpful and I enjoyed the course as always. Great layout.
Fun time
My friend and I wanted to try the new golf boards. They were fun and a different golfing experience. This is not the easiest corse but I always enjoy playing here. Employees are great and on a crowded day we had good movement on the course.
Great round.
The GOOD:
The place was in great shape. Greens were amazing, the sand was well-raked, the pro shop attendant was extremely nice. They have a grass hitting area on the range. They have surf board carts (next time I'll try one.)
Course is quite challenging. A few holes require some thought.
The bad:
A big storm rolled through the night before only left a few fairways wet.
Poison ivy/oak just off the course. I lost half a dozen balls during my round, only one ball was thirsty. Two of the other five were deep in the trees. The other three errant shots were right off the fairway, normal punch outs. After being warned at the pro shop and seeing the signs, I dropped and took the penalties.
I didn't rent a surf-cart! (But that's my fault not theirs.)
Will definitely be back.
The course is in AMAZING shape and it's awesome to hear that you enjoyed your round. We definitely recommend trying out a golfboard next time they are at ton of fun!
Hi John, we had quite a bit of rain in the past week or so and did see some water on the course. Our team is working around the clock and behind the scenes to get the water moving as fast as possible off the course. We understand it is frustrating, but hope you will be back to play with us when things dry up a bit more.
