This a nice course but the greens are tricky.
This is nice course, in good shape. An easy course with tough greens.
Good, not Great
My day did not start off so hot, as I walked in, and the guy at the cash register seemed almost offended that I interrupted whatever he was doing so that I could get my cart and pay for some range balls. Outside, there were two areas with carts, with little separation between the two, so it would have been nice if he had told me where I was supposed to get my cart from. Luckily, someone who had played there before told me that I was in the returned carts, or my cart probably would have ran out of juice.
Once I began to play, though, things went really well. I started off as a single, and played for first 8 holes like that before catching up with a threesome who immediately asked me if I would like to go ahead and join them. I did, and they were a fun group of guys to play with.
The fairways and rough are not bad at this course, but the greens are horrendous. Multiple divots not repaired, which only makes the greens that much tougher to putt on.
It cost me 20 bucks with a cart, so it's a good value, but the course has nothing on Rio Hondo. But if you desire a cheaper muni course, that's quite a bit less difficult, with some still fun holes, you'll enjoy Los Amigos.
good rates
interesting little track. good if your not a long hitter. gotta think off the tee a little. lotta slope on greens
This Course needs ambassador.
I was a single and had a five some in front of me, they didn't let me play through until the 10th hole , even that they had a attitude. if there was a players assist may be that would of helped.
calm and compotable
Well maintanaced course and staff are very kind and friendly.
I strongly recommend this course.
the course is in good condition after remodeling.
i haven't play this course for a while, but the course is in a better condition after the remodeling. i will definitely recommend it to my friends.
Course is in great condition.
I have never seen Los Amigos in better condition. Fairways and rough are in great shape.. Greens are very good ( a little slow though)...
Great course
Best in Downey!!! They're making very good changes to this course!!! Great range!!!
Great value
Took advantage of a Golfnow Hot Deal for $21 w/cart. Teed off at 11:45 with no wait at the first tee.
Course is in fine shape. My only complaints are the coffee shop literally took 20 minutes to prepare our hot dog and sandwich combos at the turn, hence, we lost our position. The other complaint is there always seems to be a backup at the 17th tee. After playing at a reasonable pace, we came upon 3 groups at the 17th tee. The course needs to encourage waving up on the par 3s.
Greenskeeper has my review now you do too!

For those of you who know me, this used to be one of favorite courses. It has always had good bones and character. This course was a pleasure to play. It's a short course but makes you use every club in your bag. The course has undergone some major improvement. A lot of the old landing spots have been replaced with bunkers tightening the landing area. The turf is lush with good coverage. Even the greens are completely different from what I remember. I mean this course is in GREAT shape tee to green.
Check out my post on golfing-guru dot com later. I also have a few photos up on Instagram @Ringworld. Be sure to LIKE them please and follow my golf meanderings.
Scorecard has been updated. Used to be a 70 par now it's 71. Hole 9 was lengthened a little to become a short par 4. You can try to bomb the ball past the bunkers that protect it but it's definitely a risk/reward scenario for the average golfer like myself.
Greens are perhaps the best I have seen on this course, period. They feel soft underfoot but roll true. The greens have good undulation so take a look at your ball from either side to get a good feel for the green. Fairways like I said earlier have good coverage. Lies may be on the thin side but very playable for this time of the year. Rough has been cut short as well and not as penalizing as you would think. Still the rough will take a lot out of your ball so stay away. Sand in the bunkers are white sandy beaches. If you don't mind the beach you won't mind hitting out of this fluffy white stuff.
Pace of play-- OK. We were a twosome stuck behind a foursome. They were two holes behind the group in front of them. One thing I should say about the greens and bunkers though is FIX your divots and RAKE your bunkers. For the love of Pete folks take care of your course. It took a year and a half to bring this course from life support and to have the lot of you NOT take care of this, shame on you.
Facilities have also been updated. Cafe is redesigned and seats large groups comfortably. Their bar is also updated as the banquet room as well. There was a copyright conference there and the facility shines.
Hats off to the staff and maintenance crew. You guys have done a heck of a job and dare I say give Rio Hondo a run for their money. At $18 to walk at twilight it's a deal especially with the long summer days. We finished with plenty of light teeing off at around 3pm.
One thing to mention is the practice area. Wowzers. Two chipping areas; one with a small bunker. Two large putting areas, and a range with a grass hitting area. Everything here seems a lot more inviting I also noticed a lot more business here.
My advice if you are questioning whether to play here or not. Do! You won't be disappointed.
Bad example
Have played there many times in the last 5years. Love the improvements and the upgrades. Had start time on 07/29/14 for 3 seniors. This day the starter told that due to many players we would have to play in a 5 some. That in it self would not have been a problem. We have 2 walkers and 1 due to health conditions has to ride. The starter said he would have to charge our single rider an extra 4 dollars because he was riding alone. Really!!! He did not give us a choice to play our usual group of 3. Our third man was the odd man out due to His ( the starter) decision and charged this SENIOR and extra fee, was outrageous . He told us that this course policy and he had been told to enforce it. I asked him about this policy and told him there was no mention of it when I booked this on line. He got very arrogant with me and asked to show him my proof, by providing him with my confirmation. Again REALLY. Love this course but this gentleman needs a course in customer relations. This not indicative of what we our used to experiencing at this very friendly venue.
good condition, but...
I had played Rio Hondo the day prior and the local guy I golfed with said Los Amigos was one of the better deals around. True, it was; golfnow deal of $22 to ride. He said ignore any reviews from more than 6 months ago because the course has improved dramatically, and the course is indeed in very good shape...but...
I would never play here again, primarily because they allow five-somes. It's an absolutely flat course and most people walk, or should i say stroll, so the round is PAINFULLY slow. If you want to stand around for every single shot, then by all means, this is the place. They could do a better job of pace of play.
Nice golf course.
the course is in good condition the greens are slow and the pace is slow, a very busy course or it was the day I played there, nice though.
Quite an Improvement
I played this course last year and the conditions were less than stellar. When I recently played this course, a lot of improvements were made. The conditions were much better which made for a great day playing at the course. The greens and fairways were excellent.
Beautiful Course
Picturesque settings, well-maintained course. Experienced a little problem on the 17th hole where wedding party guests went joy riding, circling the green 3 times as they picked up our golf balls. Management was apologetic and understood the potential danger in joy-riders on the course. Handled situation well.
Fun course
Nice little muni course...good for intermediate players. The length was nice and the greens were challenging bit with good speed. It was pretty wide open with some doglegs. My favorite part was that the rough around the fairway and greens didnt feel like hackin through lettuce which was nice. Btw i tee off at 1145 on a wednesday for pace of play review. I didnt have any food there and didnt have a ton of interaction with the staff. I will go play this couse again. Oh also for the value...i played for 22 bucks riding, so keep that in mind with my value rating haha
great fairways
The fairways are kept in great condition. However, the greens could use a little trimming. Overall, the course is worth the money.
Nice course
Los Amigos is in very good condition. The greens are still healing but the tee boxes, bunkers and fairways are in excellent condition. I played with some very friendly people and had a good time. There were a few holes we had to wait but we were conversing with the group in front of us so it was not bad at all. overall, this is a short course, the greens are not very big and the fairways are pretty generous. You will have a good time here.
Great greens
Fun course, not too difficult. There are a couple of dog legs, where you can cut the corner fairly easily, so you can make it on the green in two without much effort. The greens are truly beautiful, with some challenging undulations. A lot of fun to try to 2 putt. Overall a good experience, and one I would golf again, if given the opportunity.
I wouldn't say it's better than Rio Hondo, but Downey is blessed to have two good affordable courses!
