When Timberlane Golf & Recreation opened in 1959 as Timerlane Country Club, it was the first private golf club on the west bank of the Mississippi. The oaks planted at that time have beautifully matured, adding to both the scenery and difficulty of the golf course. Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed the course, crafting a challenging test that has been ranked as one of the most difficult golf courses in the country. You'll have to contend with 80 strategically placed sand bunkers and 17 different water hazards. While the course is not overly punishing, you'll have to be prepared to have every aspect of your game tested. Before tackling Timberlane''s golf course you may find it helpful to warm up using the club's all-grass driving range and you can use the large putting green to practice with putting, chipping, and sand play.

Not the best place for your money

I just played this course last weekend. To be fair, I do live in the Chicago area and am used to the grass here. I have golfed most of the US. The fairways were not great and beat up. The maintenance people were out on the fairways mowing and holding us up a lot of the time. The greens were like craters and beat up. The grass that was cut up was loose and all over everything that we used. The back 9 was the best part but still not the greatest. I don't typically rate anything but the maintenance people really were in the way alot of the time.

Good morning, we are sorry you had a less than perfect experience. I will forward your concerns over to our Golf Course superintendent.

As far as the greens go... they were aerated a few days prior and we let everyone know this when checking in. We also gave 20% off because of this. Hope you try us again if you are back in town!

NOLA local - never played this course - pleasantly surprised

I’m a local and have been playing avidly for 4 years. I always play Lakewood, CP, TPC, English Turn, etc and got a tee time here.

I was pleasantly surprised with the course. The new clubhouse is beautiful, and the course is in pretty dang good shape, I’d say.

The mossy oaks and cypress trees are gorgeous and there are parts where you can really tell it’s a RTJ designed course.

You guys have done a good job bringing it back. Keep up the good work.

I had a 10:50 time I drove up to the tee box at 10:40 the ranger told me I had to wait until 10:50 ( of course the course was WIDE OPEN) so I chilled then another single rode up with a 11:05 Tee time and the ranger let him Tee Off before me. I've been discriminated against before but cmon man it's just golf. I'll never go back there

Getting Better

Fairways need some work. Greens weren't bad. Lots of weeds but looks like they performed some irrigation work.

Getting better

Staff friendliness depends on if they know you or not. I play here often, the greens have gotten better. They are rolling fairly consistent. Fairways need TLC, patchy grass in most areas. Marshall needs to enforce a 90* rule, as several carts are riding down the center of the fairway and parked 2 feet off the green. There’s not much to speak of on amenities. Yardage markings in the fairway are non-existent. Bunkers need to be re-worked, packed sand beneath 1” fluff. Challenging course with plenty of water to navigate along with a few tight fairways. Worth a look…….they are improving!

Stay away!

The golf pro, Richie Tomblin, is an a-hole.

First time playing here, I followed the cart path toward the first tee, looking for a chipping/putting green. Looked to my left, saw the green, then looked to see if I could drive the cart there. Didn’t see any signs saying otherwise.

After being there for 5 minutes, the pro (Richie), steps outside the door from the pro shop with a cell phone up to his ear and yells, “get that cart off the grass”, then said to the person on the phone, “there’s a guy parked on the grass with a f-ing golf cart”. But he didn’t say f-ing

His approach is very unprofessional and very rude. I felt like I was walking on eggshells afterwards.

The course, if you’re an experienced golfer, spend your money and time somewhere else. The starter even suggested going to Stonebridge if we were staying longer.

The fairways are dirt, weeds and a little grass. The greens look nice but are very slooooooow. The back nine has some greens that were scalped by the mower.

The tee boxes are pretty tore up, needing a lot of attention. No ball washers on the course.

After completing my round, I drove past the building that was about 30 feet from the clubhouse. There were some old timers hanging out having a drink, a couple guys walked around the side to take a leak. Seriously, the club house was 30’ away! The club pro should worry more about this than a cart parking on the grass!

The staff, in the pro shop, couldn’t care less if you’re there. Not friendly at all.

The starter said they only had 50 players scheduled to play for the day. Tells you a little something about the course and staff.

Sir we are sorry that you felt offended that we corrected you for not adhering to the signage posted directly in-front of the grass that states "No carts beyond this point". Not only did you ignore the signage posted but went around the fence area and rope.

Our starter suggesting to try another golf course in the area while you are in town is in our opinion polite.

As far as our fairways and greens go we just had a major drought and are in the process of repairing them. - Richie Tomblin, PGA

Terrible course terrain - WAY TO LONG

Just finished my 1st round at this course, and I will not be back unless the prices become sub $40! The holes were way too long on the par 4 holes. You can tell they attempted to shorten it, but still not enough. Pace of was ok considering it was later in the day.

The worse part about this experience was the terrain! The cart path AND the fairways was SUPER rough and bumpy & the grass was so long it was hard to find a ball even if you were just a foot or two in the rough

Long Holes with Terrible Conditions

Played this course for the first time with a buddy. We paid $40 which during one of the hot deals which seems normal for a public course in New Orleans. But the fairway was almost all dirt with some sand and a few blades of grass mixed in. The rough was so unkempt that you can’t find half of the balls that miss the dirt in the fairway.

The only saving grace of this course seemed to be the greens which looked pristine. But they rolled in such a way that they were almost impossible to read, and unpredictable. Overall, not worth half the money to play here. Only fun part was getting to swing true with a driver on all the par 4’s and 5’s.

Food at the turn is good and reasonably priced. And the cook was very nice. All other employees seemed to not care.
