About
Lakewood Golf Club is one of the South's premier golf destinations. Opened in 1961, the course has hosted the New Orleans Open 26 times over the years. Beautiful cypress and oak trees frame the golf course, providing a beautiful backdrop throughout the round. When Ron Garl renovated the course in 2009 he managed to obtain its original character while modernizing the layout with new fairways, tee boxes, and greens. Strategically placed bunkers and fairway contouring were also added. Lakewood Golf Club is owned by the New Orleans Firefighters Pension Fund and as a tribute to New Orleans Firefighters, the final hole was redesigned and renamed "Fire in the Hole." Called so because the traps are arranged in a set of flames against a backdrop of red sand. You won't find anything like the bunkering on this par 4.

Good not great
This course is right in the middle of okay and good. Nothing really stood out to make this a good course. Conditions were solid with some rough patches. This course is about as good as my golf game (15 handicap). From out of state, I’d for sure come back but not bc it was breathtaking. A great place to get some solid holes in.
The game is gone…currently
I played Lakewood in May and it was in great shape. As the summer has progressed they seem to have let it go. Lots of overgrowth on tee boxes and in fairways. Right now it’s comparable to Stonebridge or city park north.
Ups and Downs of Lakewood
I’ve played at Lakewood since they reopened with their new layout. It used to rival English Turn as the nicest course in NOLA. Now the course resembles a low level muni (no offense to munis). The staff is friendly and the layout is still nice but the tee boxes, fairways, bunkers and greens need help.
Conditions of course
Grass wasn't cut and the shrubbery wsnt taken care of. Could hardly see the cart path
Great course with great amenities!
Was very surprised with this course! Thought the course was in great condition, and the golf carts were set up with a towel, a cooler with ice, and some tees to use! Thought the practice facilities were great, and the snack shack in the middle of the course was a nice and convenient to stop for food and drink! Can’t wait to come back again, but with my regular group of 4 next time.
What has happen
From a course that we’d play daily with 3 years ago with no complaints to a course you can barely play. Looks like a golf course in a 3rd world country. The greens are horrendous literally bounces the ball each roll don’t know where it’s going then the tee boxes are even worse. The best thing at the course are the snacks/drinks and the new clubs they might sell in the store
Sad
Absolutely terrible…pace of play was horrendous and the course conditions were even worse…truely sad for what used to be an amazing course
Greens
Some of the greens has a type of weeds growing, same as last year around this time. The weather needs to be above 80 degrees for 48 hrs or so and they will be able to kill the weeds. So be patient, the greens are normally top notch after that.
Lakewood 2025
The staff were professional and friendly but the greens were in bad shape. Weeds growing on all the greens with the exception of 18. The conditions of the greens made putting unfair with the amount of weeds growing on them. My biggest issue was I paid $70.00 to play this course. If I had known the condition of the greens prior to booking my round I would have gone somewhere else.
Disappointed
These greens are 2nd/3rd worst in the GNO area. Especially considering the green fee.
