The course just the right amount of long holes and short holes
The fairways are very rough {ie} lots of pot holes. Its hard to get an even stance on flat ground. The tree lined fairways are very nice, and makes for forced accurate driving.
All in all it is a nice old golf course.
Dog Legs and Bunkers!
Super fun course with dogleg fairways and bunker protected greens! Cup location made the putting a challenge and insured we were on our game. All in all a very fun course to play.
Nice course for a quick round
This course is the oldest of the Tucson city courses. It was in excellent shape. The bunkers could use some work. The fairways and greens were excellent. Good value for the price.
I've played Pinehurst but I like El Rio better. The greens are challenging and the many trees add to the difficulty.
Course layout is impressive...sand, water and rolling fairways are pleasing to the eye. Easily one of the top three courses in the state of Arizona!
Decent value for a decent course
This is a typical city course that has the basics that you could need. Nothing really WOWs you but for a Friday morning tee time the price was very reasonable.
More Maintenance required
The course is in fairly good condition. The fairway have been clipped fairly well, but the edges are very penal and you can't even be sure you can find your ball unless you steip on it.
The greens need to be watered and don't really hold a good shot into them..
This is a shame since 2 weeks ago the rough was not as long and the greens were more receptive.
Nice course in the middle of town
The greens were in great shape and held the approach shots well.
Cart Girl was very attentive and courteous.
Best condition ever.
I have played this course intermittently for the past 6 years. It is currently in the best shape I have ever seen it. The greens were a bit slow. This is an old style golf course that is short by today's standards but with tiny greens and lots of hazards fronting most of the greens, you'd better bring a sharp short game or you will be writing down large numbers. Really fun course and imminently walkable.
Nice and shady tree lines to help keep you cool and straight.
It was a fun round today. The course was, to my amazement,in decent shape. The teeing grounds were spotty as you could tell they had just did some maintenance to the surfaces. Some fairways were dry in spots but, for the most part were very playable. I do love El Rio for its' trees. On a hot day in Tucson you can find shade relief on almost every hole as you move your way through the course. I will say this, stay out of the sand if possible, some of the traps I found were not properly prepared during the course setup. All in all, it was a nice experience.
Course was in fair condition, greens where in good condition, cart paths where in poor condition
If you want to play an easy course to practice on El Rio for the money is great. You must overlook some of the sloppy course work, grass trimmings left on course, mud 1" deep in some areas, tee boxes with huge grass plugs or no grass at all.
The course is green and lively.
El Rio golf course was a great shape. My only gripe was the the rock hard bunkers. Although it had rained the previous day, I can't seem to find a west side golf course with decent bunkers.
Always fun to play here.
I enjoy playing El Rio because it's a forgiving course. If you tend to hit drives off the fairway, the course is laid out such that you can still keep the ball in play in another fairway. The course was in good condition and reasonably priced.
fun city course.
course is nice and green. some tee box issues and bunkers are hard and compacted due to the rain. carts need work. great city course, and good price.
First Tucson course for me
Played El Rio on the "all you can play" so we squeezed in 27 holes for 18.00 each, great deal. Typical desert course and decently kept up. Carts have just about had it but still run and there are some areas that are pretty rough. Alot of these muni courses are going away and its too bad. Would come back.
The course was in great shape
The course was in great shape. Fairways were full. Most green I've seen. I will come back and play again soon. And hope that the course is in this same condition. Thank you.
best fairways in the city. did not overseed this winter
El Rio is a City of Tucson golf course and maintence is not a high priority. but now the fairways are lush and thick, greens good for this time of the year. summer transition from rye grass to bermuda is tough in this area. El Rio succeeded because they did not over seed this past winter. small greens are a real challenge.
Great course condition
Course nearly empty during middle of the day great time to play without waiting for next tee box
Wide open!!!!
This course was in great shape this round...
If you have any arrant shots its easy to play back into your fairway because its wide open. The only thing stopping you is the abundance of trees that line 80% of the holes. Course is very fun to play!!
It's a muni.
The greens still haven't fully recovered from aeriation and are bumpy but puttable. Need to fix before course is used for a competitive event. Bunkers were good but have to keep up on their maintenance so they don't get baked in this heat.
And, if you can't play this course in 3 hours you need to consider another activity. It's easy to get around quickly.
