Extremely Unprofessional Treatment Toward New Golfer – Very Disappointing Experience
My wife and I visited Silverbell Golf Course hoping to enjoy a positive day together and introduce her to golf for the first time. Instead, we experienced some of the most unprofessional and discouraging treatment we’ve ever encountered at a golf course.
When we arrived at the first tee, a staff member immediately told my wife she couldn’t play because she didn’t have her own bag or clubs. I asked to see this rule in writing, and he couldn’t provide it. After checking both the Silverbell and Tucson City Golf websites myself, there is no policy stating that every golfer must have their own clubs. We had already paid over $130 for the round, and this “rule” seemed to be something made up on the spot.
Although they eventually allowed us to continue, the staff member followed us and watched us at multiple holes, making the experience extremely uncomfortable. Despite the slow group playing in front of us—and the players paired with us struggling—we kept pace the entire time.
After the 9th hole, the same staff member told my wife she could no longer play because she was “too slow,” even though the delays were clearly caused by the group ahead of us. Instead of managing the real issue, they singled out my wife, who was simply trying the sport for the first time. This behavior felt discriminatory and completely unnecessary.
What was supposed to be a fun and meaningful day turned into embarrassment, stress, and frustration because of poor staff judgment and nonexistent policies being enforced. Silverbell Golf Course failed to provide basic professionalism, courtesy, or consistency in their operations.
This course needs serious training and oversight, especially when it comes to how they treat beginners and new players. I will not be returning, and I hope management takes this type of behavior seriously so other guests don’t go through the same experience.
Disappointed
Fun course, but the experience was disappointing. Our group felt singled out by staff throughout the round, apparently just because we were playing with women. We were repeatedly approached and told that “people were complaining,” even though we were keeping pace and following etiquette. It killed the vibe and made the round uncomfortable. Golf should be welcoming for everyone, and this really missed the mark.
Sad it is now like this
Played this course many years ago and loved it then. The course was in poor shape now and dire need of care. Greens slow, lots of dirt in the fairways. Spend the extra 20 dollars and go to a better course. Would not play again. The staff though, was very nice and helpful.
Great Staff
As a newer golfer still finding my rhythm—typically shooting in the high 40's or low 50s for 9 holes—I found this course to be an ideal place to challenge myself and improve. The layout offered a great balance of playability for a new golfer, especially with the longer yardage shots, which gave me a chance to really work on my distance control and accuracy. I appreciated how the course design encouraged thoughtful shot selection without feeling overwhelming. It was probably helpful that it was a slower day on the course due to extreme hot weather in Arizona. The staff made sure to offer ice, extra water, a cold towel, and checking in on players.
One of the highlights of my round was hitting a clean par on a par 3 right in front of the course marshal. Their group of four had kindly let our threesome play through, and that moment felt like a small but meaningful win in my journey toward becoming a better golfer.
Beyond the course itself, the staff made the experience even more enjoyable. From the ranger to the maintenance crew and the food and beverage team, everyone was friendly, accommodating, and genuinely supportive. It’s clear they care about both the course and the players.
I will come back to this course.
Silverbell is a winner.
This is a very good public course.
The layout is fun and the course has some challenging hole that you have play strategically.
Nice people and fair pricing makes it a winner.
Watch out for maintenance workers
Great clubhouse staff and starters as always. Maintenance workers stayed on the fairway while we teed off with backs turned to us. Ball landed right of a maintenance gator and the guy just looked at me and kept walking and ignored my voice and my arm gestures with headphones in. Proceeded to weed wack the green side bunker while we chip and putt. Next hole when we got to the tee box they turned every sprinkler on the fairway and just stood there watching us waiting for us to hit. Of course we just stood there waiting for the water to stop but they didn’t turn it off. Whole time the sprinklers are on another maintenance worker was joy riding the gator over the sprinklers with the tire. A few holes later on a par 3 another worker is laying on the fairway where we could hit him and just didnt move. Again the clubhouse staff is awesome.
Great track
This course is a treasure. If you’re a beginner, it’s wide open - you won’t lose a lot of balls. Great place to stay in play if you’re not hitting fairways. Very nice short game practice area. The staff are always friendly and fun.
City course
Tucson does not provide the same quality and services to all their courses. They let this one slide and never let the public know when they do maintenance like punching the greens and still charging an overpriced green fee
Great municipal course
Course was in great shape, green fees reasonable, staff friendly, what else do you want?
