About
Thorntree opened in 1984, and while it has changed ownership multiple times over the years,it remains one of the toughest courses in the DFW area. The course features six lakes and three spring-fed creeks that spice up the layout, as well as immaculate fairways and challenging bent-grass greens.
On the front, No. 5 stands out as one of the most difficult holes – a 400 yard-plus par 4 that runs through a chute of trees and doglegs right into a green sided by a pond.
The back is a bit more difficult, which you’ll realize quickly due to the 666-yard double dogleg No. 10. The next hole is only a 382- yard par 4, but the approach is dicey into the shallow green. No. 13 is another nice hole–only 338 yards with another challenging approach into a green that’s guarded by an old thorn tree.
Getting there : From I-35 south, take the Wintergreen Road exit and turn right. Drive 4 miles to the course, and the entrance is on the right side.

Get what you pay for - good value
Definition of average. Greens are always smooth and shockingly slow considering how hard and unreceptive to spin they are. Does not drain well, so keep recent weather in mind.
The course/facilities remind me of a 70’s country club that ran out of money for upkeep. That being said, they’re at least keeping the course playable.
Course is a 3.5 at best but factoring in value for price, given how overpriced DFW golf can be, it’s a 5/5 if you’re ok with it lacking quality.

Great Course
Course was is great shape. Greens were a bit slow but with all the rain lately that was not a surprise.

Great Weather for Golf
I guess the chance of rain made for an open course as we were able to tee off earlier than our 2:40 tee time. No one in front of us at all that we saw and just a couple of singles who came up behind us. Fairways, tee boxes and greens were great. Looks as if they have lost some trees due to the extremely cold temps in February but that might be a benefit to some players.

Don’t book an early tee time
Very irritating to book a 6:40am tee time just to have the pro shop manager open up at 6:35am. No time to hit balls before. Why list the tee time if your facilities aren’t even open?
Fairways were in good shape. Some tee boxes and greens were pretty bad. Cart parking brake didn’t work which is supremely annoying on a hilly course, and this is the second time thats happened here for me.

Horrible Customer Service in Pro Shop
I guess with golf gaining in popularity again you no longer have to provide good customer service. Never even tried to offer up a solution. Sad as I played this course many times when they were struggling to get people out. Because of their staff I’ll spend my money elsewhere.

Good condition for the recent weather
I have played Thorntree in the past when it was a private club and the conditions were always very good. Over the past couple years it has slipped into a subpar condition but I have to admit the course was in amazing shape despite the poor weather conditions we experienced a couple months back. Tee boxes, fairways and greens all looked really good. Greens were slow but rolled true. There was a beverage cart out even on a Monday. Pace of play was good, will definitely go back for another round.

Nice Place 20 year ago!!
This place used to be a country club.
It’s about a $35.00 course now. Trees overgrown. Fairways are beaten down, missing grass, tree roots growing above ground everywhere. Hit the ball in the fairway and it rolls 100 yards into trouble because the grass/hard pan fairway. Total junk course. Overgrown trees alone make it a total joke. Tee boxes so hard, dry and grass free that you can’t get a tee in the ground and you are standing on dirt/hard pan.

Could be a very nice course
Lay out nice, course could very nice. Majority of greens were in poor condition, all tee boxes were in bad condition, all of the Bunkers were dry pan very little sand if any, no ball washers. It was the end of winter early spring but my city course is not like this. Your course could be so nice if someone were to give it some TLC , fertilizer and weed spray. I would and my playing partner would love to come back and rewrite my review , you have so much potential. Thanks Craig
