I may stop playing at this course..New Staff is rude, and now they require all carts be in at 6:15..7:30 for a twilight player who plays because I need a cart..With pace of play at best 9 holes..everyone is disappointed New counter staff needs Training
Won't be returning
The last time I played here was over 15 years ago, and I remember it being a decent course, but after playing here again last weekend… I will not be returning.
The Fairways are full of bare areas with squirrel everywhere burrowing hundreds of holes. There were also hundreds of Canadian Geese everywhere making a mess. Many of the holes look similar, and there is only 2 or 3 holes where you can see the bay,. The only parts of the course that seemed acceptable were the bunkers and greens. The bunkers had a decent amount of soft sand in them, and the greens did not have many bare areas, but were often bumpy.
I'd probably play here if it was free, but only after thinking it over for a bit.
For the sake of my fellow golfers, I have to be honest: Shoreline has absolutely the worst course conditions I have experienced in 15+ years of playing golf. And the worst pace of play I have ever experienced. In case you're counting, that's two all time worsts on the same course and in the same round.
There are some negative reviews of Shoreline golf links on this site, but I don't think any of those accurately depict just how painful it can be to play at Shoreline.
Course Conditions: It is truly debatable whether there is more green grass vs dirt/dead grass on this course - I'm being completely serious. I understand things might not always get the care or resources they need on a muni course, but when you begin to have visions of being on the moon or Mars instead of a golf course, you know it's pretty bad. Gopher holes - it is real folks, our furry friends have created a colony on Shoreline golf links, and there are many, many, many on every hole. Think twice before you put that $4 Pro V1x into play! Goose droppings - be forewarned, there is a ton of poop pretty much everywhere on this course. Even if you didn't hit your Pro V1x into a gopher hole, it might end up covered in goose poop. Perhaps the most surprising thing was that all the greens were actually...green. They were also very bumpy and slow, but they were green, I said green!
Pace of play: We had the misfortune of being being a foursome that apparently were competing in the "World's Ugliest Swing" and "World's Worst Comedian" contests simultaneously. Although tempted to hit up on them (or actually over them), it became clear after a few holes that the group in front of them were also contestants in the same contests and the backup was several holes deep. As you can imagine, being forced to wait at nearly every tee box regardless of it was a par 3, 4 or 5, meant that despite trying to keep a reasonable distance, we heard these folks with their foul mouthed tirades 18 times that day - just wonderful.
So it sounds like all doom and gloom, but maybe a few bright spots:
The range has grass tees - yeah I know, after reading the comments above it must sound like I'm joking. I am not. A bit misleading if you hit the range before teeing off, because you will realize after a few holes that the most green grass you will see today was during warmup.
Staff/Restaurant - to be honest, we didn't really have the need to talk to any staff except during check-in and the restaurant looked quite legit. A nice setup that is very conducive for grab and go at the turn. Due to the pace of play, by the time we got to the turn, the grill was cleaning up and only drinks were available. Nothing like a little dehydration while you play the longest round of your life.
Anyways, if you've read this far, I hope you found this brutally honest review useful. For the price Shoreline charges, or actually at any cost, the course conditions and pace of play make it a horrible value. Save yourself and go play anywhere else.
Challenging course with good conditions overall
Well maintained course with good greens and fairways. Challenging holes that make you work for your shots. The bunkers could use some sand though.
Can Improve
Too much goose droppings all over. Course has some degree of challenges, which is good.
This course has a nice layout, however:
Nice layout, however, a lot of ground squirrels and holes in Fairway one person in our party lost their ball down a gopher hole.
If you got off the fairway the cart traveling was rough terrain.
I would probably play the course again if I could get a hot deal.
Squirel haven
The course has not been watered and has is patchy on most all fairways. The greens are green and fuzzy (unmowed). The squirrels have taken over so that you will lose a ball down one of the hundreds of holes on each fairway.
Not a bad course, but no course management and terrible pace of play
Welcome to a 6 hour round of golf! Too many back to back tee times, and no marshal on the course to keep people moving. We had two foursomes in front of us, both groups older and were taking almost 15 minutes to get to the green on the average par 4. It was the most frustrating round of golf I have ever played. Ten strokes for each player before they reached the 150 marker. No one to push them forward, and no chance to play through. This is the 7th time I've played this course, and 5 out of 7 times were exactly like this. Such a shame for a decent course, and pretty fun layout.
Course Etiquettes
Need to have course marshall police those players with poor etiquettes and have them warned. We had two walking players hitting the balls onto the green while we were still on the green .
Disappointing round
The start time was somewhat mixed up with groups going before and after us causing a delay. Things went downhill from there. The course seems to be quite dried out on the grass and riddled with gopher holes and swampy mud puddles. Also if you are not familiar with the course, you can get crossed up with no layout of the holes shown on scorecard.
Fun Day of Golf
Had a great time golfing with my visitor/friend. Course was a little backed up. With all the rain this year thought the course would be greener.
Fun course. good price, bumpy greens
Fun course at a good value. The greens were bumpy and made putting very challenging.
1st time here but hopefully not the last..!
This course was much better than expected! I travel a lot for work and try to take advantage of various golfing all over the US and, for being a public allowed course, this was pretty great! It re-instilled the thought that not all great courses are private; being a links course, I found the layout and scenery refreshing and beautiful to play on. Some other reviews commented on the amount of goose feces on and around the course, but I didn't notice some over-abundance of it. The thing I ran into most were squirrels and gofers; that said, there were thousands of gofer holes on the courses edge, but it's fine. Overall, the scenery was great, the fairways were great and the only variance that was a bit difficult to read were the greens- they were very bumpy, but still enjoyable. I'd play here again anytime.
Shoreline
Small hard to read greens, well bunkered-only surface raked-hard packed under so your SW will bounce and skull. Heavy dew mornings-very windy afternoons. If you go low here you got some serious game.
Shoreline conditions
I have played this track many times ime. While it can be very windy. Robert Trent Jr has
taken that into account.. it is very playable with the Wind coming at you, or coming from behind most of the holes which I enjoy as opposed to Poplar Creek in San Mateo With the Wind comes directly across the fairways and can play five to six Strokes more.
Lenny in the bar is a hysterical he has been there a long time and is a seasoned professional.
very playable greens are great. Fairways always need work a good value for the money
No info on course conditions
I normally play this course because for an average golfer like myself, it is competitive, challenging yet fun. However, all the greens were aerated 2-4 days before, plus they had approx 6 temporary tees due to course maintenance. While this is normal, it would have been good to see this announcement on golf now or somehow in advance to allow the golfer the option to find somewhere else to play until the maintenance is complete. Or at least only have to pay a fraction of the cost, not at full price!
