Morris Williams Golf Course
About
The “Mo Willie,” Austin’s third municipal course, has some character: it served as the home of Harvey Penick’s legendary golf teams, two of which won NCAA Championships back when Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw graced the fairways. And it’s named after Morris Williams, Jr., one of the best golfers to ever come out of the city. Now Austin’s airport has moved south, and this difficult Leon Howard design is a bit more peaceful.
Howard’s layout requires all types of shots, and is known for its small, slightly elevated greens. The best hole on the front is the dogleg left, 540-yard No. 2, even though some would argue that the 187-yard No. 3 is one of Austin’s all-time best. It drops 50 feet from tee to green over a pond. The back side is highlighted by water holes 11-14, with both 11 and 12 requiring approaches over the wet stuff.
Getting there : From the Austin Airport, turn left on Manor Road and the clubhouse is 100 yards down the street. The entrance is on the right.

Mo Willie Green trouble
Like this course a lot but they are having some real greens issues right not, too bad because their greens have been really good. Looks like a number of City of Austin courses are having trouble.
Very good course if you want to spend six hours playing 18 holes.
The City of Austin spent millions of dollars and a year and a half to redo this course. They did a great job.
The problem with this course is that it is too crowded on weekends. As a result, we spent almost 4 hours on the front nine and a total of six hours for 18 holes.
The front desk staff is wonderful, but the marshals are useless. They just drive around in a cart watching what you're doing. But they don't do anything to speed the pace of play.
This is the course that's worth playing on weekdays only.
decent course, Terrible staffs
The course is decent condition, but the staffs are some of the worst city employees you can find. Sadly, there isn't much you can do about with their job security. The assistance manager thinks he is above everyone and can do and talk to any customer anyway he likes it.
Exceeded my expectations
Great course, very well kept for a muni. The greens rolled nicely and the fairways were surprisingly soft compared to other courses that are hard as a rock. The pace of play was pretty slow. Only down side is that the staff member in the clubhouse was a total jerk. Customer service is key to getting people to come back, so even though Mo Willy is a great course, I might think twice about coming back.
The new Mo Willy is Awesome
Since the course was renovated, it is my favorite public course in the area. It test all areas of your game. Although the greens were shaggy and sandy, the weather was perfect and I had a wonderful time.
MoWilly, Most Improved Course in Austin
The city of Austin has invested well into Morris Williams. The greens were in good condition as was the fairway. The course is fairly open, with exception there are a few trees that could hinder you if you miss the fairway. Overall, for the Hot deal price of $20 it was a great price for a much improved course.
good beginner course
good course for the weekend golfer. nice pace of play and course in descent shape. last week of rain helped out. greens in good condition.
Great relaxed round
I always enjoy playing Mo-Willie. I love the changes they made to the course and clubhouse. One of the best places to go with a buddy for a friendly relaxed round of golf.
Tee times double booked on golfnow.com
I booked a tee time online with golfnow.com Tuesday before Wednesday tee time. Showed up to golf course only to find out tee time was double booked and had to tee off at a later time. Staff was courteous and responsive to problem. Golf Now needs to review tee times available hourly to ensure this does not happen again.
and..........
the greens and tee box of the next hole are way to close together. Someone who isn't a good player can easier hit people teeing off at the next whole.
2nd worst course ever.
1.) Wasn't offered information about the course or practice balls.
2.) Couldn't tell you the difference between the Fairway and the rough.
3.) Tee boxes are so hard you almost need a hammer to plant your tee.
4.) Greens were extremely fast, bumpy, and had several bald spots.
5.) Was bombarded by bugs, they are obviously not taking care to prevent mosquito.
6.) Didn't see the Marshall until the 8th hole, never saw a refreshment cart.
7.) The group ahead of us slow us down so bad it took 2hours and 45 minutes to play the front 9.
8.) One of our group got hit by the 5 some behind us.
9.) The fairway was so hard it made my irons bounce.
10.) The price at 2:30 was 30 bucks. Way to high for that course.
11.) The carts are extremely old and bag slots are extremely small.
I will never play this course again. I quite after the front 9.
Lovely old-style course.
For a near-city muni this is a lovely old-style course, very reasonably priced, challenging enough for most of us and a bit bearish when the wind is up, which it was when we played. Condition was good for mid-winter and staff were friendly and welcoming. We'll go back.
Nice course
Booked a hot deal and the staff gave us no static and sent us out early. The weather was cool and cart path only. Enjoyed the round except for a foursome behind us was in a big rush so we let them play through.
Austin Tx
Good course, great condition, greens a little slow
Good Value, but underwhelmed by re-design
My first go round since the course was revamped/renovated. I had hoped for more structural/meaningful changes to the design. Can't remember how much money was spent, but it was relatively large and the results were largely unnoticeable. Furthermore we are in a drought here and in front of and beside many of the greens were mud bogs! Guess that missed that part? Or already broken? either way...fail. The greens were very slow...like 2 on the stimp...not kidding. But enough with the constructive criticism. It's a fair course and you get what you pay for. Just a shame the renovation didn't make a fair course into a gem.
BEST MUNI IN ATX
Played a round with a buddy over the weekend at Morris WIlliams and I have to say I was very happy with the course and it's facilities. Fairways were green and in good condition, the greens were well kept and rolled nicely short of the standard municipal pitch marks, tee boxes were littered with tees but i did play in the afternoon so its to be expected. Noticed a few patches of mud here and there on a few holes. The large leaves that are beginning to fall make finding your ball in the fringe a task as times. Pace of play was good. Practice facilities are as nice as a municipal can get. The food and drinks are your standard sandwiches and whatnot nothing extravagant. All the employees are very courteous and the clubhouse is brand new. Overall a great deal for a $30 dollar weekend round.
Great course
Very friendly staff.. Well kept course, I am definitely playing there again! Didn't eat food so I can't rate that
Best Muny greens I've seen.
I can't speak for everyone, but I think a 3 1/2 hour round is a pretty good Pace of Play. There are a couple of long Par 3's (when playing from the tips) over water. The greens have some nice undulatios, and are generally faster and far smoother than your average Muny greens. Well maintained.
Slow!
Played a 5 hour round on Sunday before noon as a twosome. Tee times are always behind and weekends are always overbooked. Played behind a group wearing tee shirts, jeans, and had to complain on one guy who was dragging his cleats on every green in front of us. Waited on every tee box. Marshalls and management here need to get their stuff together. One of my favorite muni courses in Austin but going down hill if this continues..
Best condition since it opened 50 yrs ago. They finally got it right. Lots of grass, smooth greens.
It took a long time; but this course has finally reached its potential. Lots of grass, very good, smooth greens. If yuo haven't played it in a while give it another chance.
