Great Muni Course
Solid course for you money, a great place to come a see some different types of holes and warm up for the season.
Weather is a factor
We recently played Riverside, May 2014. The day before our play we had a few inches of rain in the area so the course was being cleaned up from debris and it was a cart path only day due to standing water and some muddy areas. Also, the rain brought out the ants, so watch where you step. The course was really well maintained and very challenging. There are some pretty long par 3 and par 4 holes that should be upgraded a level. The fairways and greens are in really great shape and most of the greens are generous. There is one large practice putting green but the driving range is a small area where you hit into the nets. Great for warm ups but not judging your shots. We would definitely return for an early morning round on a dry day.
Go for the deals
This is a great course to play if you can get a really good deal. Normally they charge $40 round. It's not worth $40. However I got a very good deal $16.55 per round including the cart. That was worth it. Anything under $20 it's worth playing Riverside
Fun, fast and easy
I played 36 holes in 4 hours on a Tuesday afternoon. Greens are slow, lots of bad lies. But fun layout and made lots of birdies!
Good pace of play
Never pushed or had to wait for the group in front of us. Perfect Spring day. The staff and cart girl were very friendly. The greens were fast... other than that can't complain. The course was in good shape.
great value
Riverside is a great value and a fun course at any skill level
Fine except group in front of us
There was hardly anyone on the course except a group of 7 guys that were playing together. They had 3 carts (3 guys in one cart) and only 1 bag per cart. We were playing as 3 and tried catching up to pass them, but they would basically run from green to tee and not give us any opportunity to approach them to pass. Finally we called the clubhouse. A marshall came out and asked them to split up. As soon as the Marshall left, the drunkest one of there group (they were all drinking) aggressively confronted us. One of his friends finally dragged him off. After 2 holes they had joined back up as a group of 7, but we had had enough of dealing. The Marshall passed by them one more time as they were still playing as 7, but didn't appear to say anything to them. Afterwards while we were loading our clubs into our cars we were confronted again. We just got in our cars and left.
this is a really good course
For the money...can't be beat.
Would be nice if staff would insist players repair ball marks on the greens.
It has gone down hill
I used to play riverside once a month or so a few years ago and I thought I would give it another shot. This has to be the worst conditions of any coarse I have played in 20 years. The fairways are non-existent and are really just hard dirt, any place there is grass has dead grass. I didn't see a single sprinkler head on the coarse so I am guessing it hasn't seen water in years, it was the equivalent of playing on a cow pasture. The greens had grass but not much. Many of the sand traps where just dirt or gravel. The tee boxes were missing markers and we're terribly uneven. There was never a cart girl or any other kind of beverage or food person. Hands down the worst coarse I have ever played, I won't be going back. Yes it is cheap to play on, but it is about the same price as all the other municipal around austin and if you go any where else you might actually enjoy your game, it's time to close this coarse down or spend some money on it.
Greens, fairways & tee boxes
Grass is thinning in various spots of the course. First time I see this course in this bad of a condition.
Riverside
I Love the fact this course has been open for so many years it is one of Austin's oldest courses and is in Great shape. I recommend this course to anyone especially if you have guest from out of town because it is the living history of golf in Austin. It is challenging even for advanced players but is doable for beginners as well.
Old Austin C.C. now an affordable muni-type
Riverside is most famous for being the home of the Austin Country Club before it moved out to a new course designed by Pete Dye Lake Austin. Today, the course is an affordable, centrally-located course that mirrors the munis in town in terms of what its facility offers. Unfortunately, it's surroundings have been so heavily developed that there is no driving range and the first hole has been shoe-horned in alongside a road and now often plays as a long par 3 to an elevated green.
That said, the back nine is really good. It's nicely walkable as most classic courses are. It's usually pretty easy to get on in the afternoon and pace tends to be a little better than out at Roy Kizer & Jimmy Clay, which pack the foursomes (and fivesomes!) in like sardines on weekends.
it was ok . just the usual riverside to me kinda of grew up on it , so i knew what to expect .
not the greatest , they dont even have a driving range , but not the worst.
Nice greens and rocky traps.
Overall the course needs some attention, and parts were under construction. The sand traps were void of sand and populated with stones. I also had a cordial homeless gentleman try to sell me golf balls on one of the holes, that was a first…..But, the greens were a real pleasure to putt on. They were fast and rolled very true, so for me this was it's saving grace. I also enjoyed the putting/chipping green next to the club house. The price I payed for the round made up for the imperfections of the course and there was no blaming extra stokes on the conditions of the greens.
the back nine is fun with 7 consecutive driver holes
Not much water but the rough is tough. Greens are soft and slow.
Excellent value for Seniors & Good First Time Challenge
As 60-somethings, my wife & I enjoyed playing Riverside. The red tees were challenging enough for a 36 handicap player but gave par rewards for a few consecutive good shots. My wife was elated to get par-par-birdie on the 3 par 5's on the back nine. Fairways were in pretty good shape for end of summer and the greens were true and fast. Red tee boxes were mostly in need of attention. Staff in the pro shop were super friendly.
Great for intermediate players
Wide fairways with moderate amount of bunkers. enjoyable course.
Golf course is convenient.
Course in pretty good shape. Staff could not find my booking in computer. Fortunately they gave us 9 hole rate. A bit of standing water and mud. Slow play today. Overall course was enjoyable.
Interesting course that is fun to play.
Several challenges mixed in with foregiving fairways. A good time was had by all.
Still a good value even though it needs work
A couple of the greens were in bad shape (parts of it appeared to be re-sodded). If you can get it cheap on golfnow, then it's still worth it.
It's a good course for someone that is trying to get better as it is not overly difficult.
