Great course, great staff
Super friendly staff, great layout and course is in really nice shape. Not super difficult but enough challenge for any level of golfer.
Great day on the course
Always a pleasure to play at SG. The scenery is stunning, the course is in very good condition. The greens roll nicely, the tee boxes are OK, the fairways well-tended, the bunkers filled in, the lakes & ponds full. The staff is always courteous, the carts are new, the regulars are friendly. This is an unpretentious, fun, challenging place to play.
Good course at a good price
For the area and price San Geronimo competes against Peacock Gap, Indian Valley, and perhaps Stonetree. I like San G more than Peacock and Indian, slightly worse than Stonetree but much cheaper. It's a good course for the money and really a nice play to play. Front 9 is flat, back 9 gets a bit hilly.
Staff was rude to people who book online.
The pro shop made it clear that if you book online they won't let you out early. This course played short I hit 3 wood off the tee all day, green in good shape. I can't say that I would like to play again. The guy in the pro-shop was lame and the restaurant.
We had a great time--the weather was great and the course conditions were fantastic-would recommend to all.
great course--the green were in great shape--the staff were very helpful--would go and play again.
Brutal round
I was paired with the tournament director for the first 9 holes and after many putts missed the cup and JUST KEPT ROLLING, he told me they had measured the speed at 25 going downslope and 14 going up. Yikes! The pin placements were the toughest I've seen and my score reflected it. Never the less I can't wait to play there again.
Its a great course in a beautiful setting.
As usual it was a challenging and very interesting course. Its a little more crowded than it was when it was American golf and more expensive. So I dont play there as much.
Pace of play way too long.
Five and a half hours to play is way too long. No marshal was seen. As far as the course goes, the greens are fast and sloped and bumpy making putting the most difficult aspect. If greens were slower it'd compensate for the sloped greens. There are some fun holes and some difficult ones, overall it's a good layout. Fairways are in good shape.
I always enjoy San G
Though I play all over the north bay, I consider this my home course as I live close by. I've played it hundreds of times over the last 9 years. It's a thoroughly enjoyable track. Every hole is unique and understandable, there are clear risk/reward opportunities, and there is only one hole you could argue forces a carry onto the green (#11).
Like virtually all courses in the area, the soil is clay, so winter play after extended heavy rains like we had Dec. 2012 can be very soggy. I stay away in those times. (StoneTree is the only local course built to weather those situations.) There has been significant drainage work done in the last 3-4 years that has improved winter play around average rains.
The greens are usually excellent by public course standards--I think they're the best public greens in the area. They are relatively smooth and true, faster than most, and nicely contoured. Several were hit by a fungus recently, but are back in shape now. My only complaint about the greens are the more than seldom poor pin locations.
In summer the fairways can get a little thin. These are tough times for golf courses. It's understandable that with the exorbitant cost of water, they just can't afford to keep them in pristine country club condition.
It's a very walkable course--I always carry my bag. It has a nice practice area (putting green, chipping/pitching green with bunker), but unfortunately does not have a range. They built a one-man hitting net for plastic balls which is a little better than nothing.
Give it a try. The setting is beautiful.
Quality track in amongst the trees and hills
This is a nice change of pace course from where I regularly play. Instead of seeing the ball go into the blue/gray sky, here the back drop on a lot of the course is actually green trees. The front nice is like being in the Pacific Northwest.
Like that part of the world, the course seems to be a bit wet and shaggy. The shoes and trousers definitely get wet. It is an easily walkable course, although there is a bit of a hike from 9 to 10, but since golfnow deals typically include carts, for those who prefer that option it's still good value.
Most of the routing is laid out plainly infront of you, but there are some tricky local knowledge holes, with shots over gullies that require some forethought. The 18th finishes up with a nice crescent hole and overall the greens have been in decent shape, even while the course might have been a bit mucky.
This is a solid 3/3.5 level course and is worth a round or two a year for those that have a bit of a hike out to it and could be a quality local for those in the neighbourhood.
Course does not drain well after rain storms
Played the golf course after a few rainy days which resulted in thoroughly saturated and muddy fairways with standing water. Fortunately, the greens drained well. The only saving grace was the price was right for the conditions of the golf course and there were less than 25 golfers playing at the time I teed off in the late morning. If you are a mudder, this is the place to play after a few days of rain.
Beautiful setting, and a good challenge
Played after several days of heavy rain, so the rough was quite high (a ball one foot off the fairway was difficult to find), but that was a unique circumstance. In general, it is in great shape and a real pleasure to play. Was paired with 2 members who were pleasant and helpful, and also good golfers. It was a very good value..
Great Conditions
THE COURSE WAS IN GREAT CONDITIONS. THE ONLY BAD GREEN WAS ON HOLE NUMBER 14.
Challenging and fun
The back 9 is much more difficult than the front. Greens were recently sanded, but have nice shapes and they don't seem to put the pins in ridiculous positions. Fairways are very well kept.
Not much going for it
Interesting layout. Could be fun to play but the horrendous pace of play ruins the experience - 5 + hrs on a Monday am! Course could use some major TLC - scruffy t-boxes, very thin and muddy fairways, greens just ok. Look elsewhere for a good golf experience.
Fun Times
Over all a nice course. Fairways are in great shape, hazards are mature and well maintained, and the greens are semi decent. We played on a holiday so the course was naturally packed, however we finished in about five hours. Even though we did wait frequently, the back nine was quiet and lots of fun to play.
Nice Track
Front Nine is pretty straight forward back nine is really challenging and fun! I played recently after rain and is drains really well, only a few soggy spots where your drives shouldnt be placed anyway.
Nice course and well maintained
The course is in good shape. Greens are fast and fairways are clean. Be sure to give yourself enough time to get to the GC. It takes awhile to get there from the freeway.
Ups and Downs
San Geronimo is one of the most beatiful courses in the bay area. The course is usually in good shape, but suffers when the rains come. The wind can come up but thats golf. Front nine is the warm up for the much more challenging back nine. Get out before 9:00 in the summer and you'll have a perfect day.
There are better options for your money.
Overall its a solid C.
The course conditions on the day that we played was very windy and it got colder as the day went on, to the point that we were freezing coming off the course at the end of the night. The greens were not great, which is my ultimate deciding factor when judging a course. The course was a challenge but not challenging. It was above-average scenicly.
Overall, I wouldn't go back.
