Avery Ranch Golf Club
About
Avery Ranch Golf Club is a part of the Avery Ranch residential community, 20 minutes northwest of town, that was carved and blasted out of the rocky ranchlands along Brushy Creek. This historically significant area was once home to Indians and robbers, who were drawn to this beautiful setting thick with dense oaks, meandering creeks and abundant wildlife.
The golf course was designed by former Jack Nicklaus designer Andy Raugust, who literally had to use dynamite to blast rock out of the landscape for five holes. His design features two potential signature holes on each nine.
No. 7 doglegs left, and features two scenic carries -- one off the tee and another on the approach. The hole is rather short, providing the chance to be in good position for this most spectacular approach shot on the golf course. Staring at the multi-level green, you’ll notice the huge rock wall fronting the green, the large bunker to the right, and the native cacti to the rear.
Avery Ranch Golf Club's 13th is sure to be considered one of the best par 3s in the Austin area. The 161-yard par 3 features water on the right side, impressive, towering oaks in the back, and a unique ridge of rocks to the right of the green. The reasonable distance makes it a fun challenge, and the hole features a bail out area in case of a miss

Absurd members
The round was fine. The course was in good condition for winter play- tee boxes were a little sloshy but this wasn't a deal breaker. However I was playing alone and was stuck behind a foursome with two walkers. The refused to acknowledge my presence and refused to allow me to play through. In fact if they even happened to see my tee shot they would turn around, put my ball in their bag, and continue walking. One other time they finally looked at me, picked up my ball and threw it in the water. Another single had caught up to me- he was also a member- and ran up front after 3 holes to tell them to let us play though. They said 'no.' We played our shots, and when we reached the green one of the foursome began screaming at us, telling us we need to learn golf etiquette. Their member, and the single behind me continued yelling at each other for several minutes. We finally went past them and never encountered them again. If the members in front are any indication of the member base as a whole - which I am sure they arent- I would be hesitant to join.
Despite this encounter the round was enjoyable. Wind picked up on the back nine and both me and the other player had a very hard time finding balls in the fairway. Just need to be greened up a bit in the coming spring and this shouldn't be a problem.
Avery Ranch affordable and challenging
Great staff. Course was challenging but in good shape. Overall a beautiful course.
Thank you for coming out and playing Avery Ranch Golf Club! We appreciate you taking the time to leave just a positive review! Happy to see that our staff treated you well and you had a pleasant experience while golfing with us. Hope to have you back soon!
Good course
Course is always in good condition. A fun and at times challenging layout. You won't get in too much trouble being in the second cut on most holes but the elevation changes make for an interesting round.
Super fun and challenging!
this course is great! love the scenery, the way the holes are positioned throughout the Hill Country...beautiful! It will make you think about shot to shot which is great...Love playing here!
We are so glad to see that you love playing at Avery Ranch! There is nothing better than a round of golf with the Hill Country views. Hope to see you back out on the greens soon!
Not worth the money
The course conditions have really fallen off since the change in ownership. I would like to see the new owners invest in the course, specifically the fairways.
Hi Robert,
We appreciate you taking the time to leave feedback on your experience at Avery Ranch. We are constantly keeping the course in top condition, so we hope you will give us another shot and come back out soon.
Great course, very poor pratice facilities
Played here many times. Layout has variety and many interesting holes. staff are very friendly. Reason for this review though is practice facilities have always been poor and getting worse. range is usually off mats - putting green often closed. when open is tiny with 3 holes....chipping area is usually wet, crowded with rock hard grounds. for a course that has plenty of room, they planned very poorly.
Hi Ric,
Thank you for coming out and playing the course many times. We thank you for giving us feedback on the practice facilities.
Good course, terrible staff
I brought my father-in-law out for my second ever round at Avery Ranch and had a number of problems with the staff but the course was excellent.
Let me begin by the course review: The course was in great shape, bunkers well maintained, and the greens were fair and true. There were a few issues but overall very very happy with the course and it's conditions. The layout is challenging but enjoyable.
The staff:
When trying to book a tee time it took 5 calls to get anyone to answer the pro-shop phone. Once we got past that issue and arrived at the course they were perhaps distracted by a wedding being held at the site and a tournament finishing up in the morning. When rounding 9 and heading to 10 they had the clubhouse and path blocked off with no clear directions as to how to get to hole 10. We did eventually figure it out but were unable to use our drink vouchers as we were routed around the clubhouse. I get it, it's a wedding, but that doesn't excuse pushing aside every other customer you have and there are plenty of acceptable ways to handle this.
Then, when driving between hole 13 and 14 our cart simply quit working. The battery light was flickering. I called the pro-shop and once again got no answer. It took 4 tries to reach anyone and once I did he insinuated that perhaps I don't know how golf carts work and to try wiggling the forward / reverse handle. After assuring him that I can tried all possible remedies, he promised they were sending staff out to bring us a new cart. We waited for 40 minutes for that cart to arrive. At that point is was beginning to get dark so we gave up and simply walked back to our vehicle. I saw the pro-shop employee on the way out and he assured me that he had sent staff out and they claimed to not be able to find us. I am not sure how you are unable to find a stalled golf cart or how we could have possibly missed them; but alas it was pointless.
This was perhaps the most frustrating golfing outing I have ever been a part of. As good as the golf course itself was, I had to placate my father-in-law who is not a young man and was forced to walk the entire distance from 14 to the clubhouse. Not a word of apology was issued, just an excuse.
We deeply apologize for your experience at our course. We can promise you this is not a common occurrence at Avery Ranch. Please let us know what we can do to make it up to you. Our deepest apologies once again.
Slow play on Sunday
5 hr round of golf on a Sunday other than that Awesome
Hi Vincent,
First off we would like to apologize for the slow pace of play you experienced when playing a few weeks ago. We hope that did not ruin your round! Hope to have you back at Avery Ranch soon!
Avoid
This course used to be a great place to go. Conditions have deteriorated despite the high fees. I also made a tee time, cancelled it according to their guidelines and they still charged my card. After respectfully calling the shop for 2 weeks they still refused to refund my money. The poor course conditions and lack of ethical behavior of the staff will keep me away from this course from now on. It's a shame the place is so poorly managed as it is a good layout. If you play there, don't give them a credit card number. They will charge you either way!
Great course
Great course and layout. Excellent condition. With 5 set of tees a challenge for all golfers.
Thank you so much for the 5 Stars. Glad to see you found the course to be in top condition. We hope you will be back to see us again soon!
Slow play ruined this round
This was the slowest round of golf I ever played at this course. They sold the golf now tee times behind a tournament and didn't do anything to speed up the pace of play. Basically the tournament was more important than any other groups playing that day! Next time I book a time at that course I will be sure to call them and make sure there is no tournament scheduled that day!
We apologize for the slow pace of play that you experienced a few months back when golfing at Avery Ranch.
Beautiful xourse
Avery Ranch was in pristine shape. Every green was near perfect. There had been a couple of days of rain prior so we were on cart path only which slowed the pace of play considerably. Other than that I thought the round was super. The course was in the best condition of any course I've played in the Austin area.
Thank you for the 5 Stars! We appreciate all the great feedback. We apologize that the pace of play was a bit slow, but the rain got us that day! Hoping to have you back soon!
Perfect Greens, Fun Course
The course is beautiful. The neighborhood does not interfere. All cuts are done well and the greens are immaculate. Even the deer roaming around the front 9 patiently wait to snack on berry bushes as you pass. Other the the overtly, rude starter which made for an odd start to the round, we were treated to a special noon rate with a swift pace of play. The back 9 plays faster. The 19th hole has very reasonable pricing on food and drinks. I will be back.
Great condition
It was great weather and course but my score was terrible.
Good course, but very slow pace of play
The Avery Ranch course is a fun, challenging but fair layout. It's normally in good condition, expect any big rain storms the course does not drain fast and there's tons of concrete around the area. I love the location in North Austin. The reason I cannot rate this course higher is because I have not played under 5 hours the last 10 times I've played it. One round was 5 hours, 40 minutes. The management gives me the impression it's all about the money. They do a lot of rounds and need stricter marshals pushing people along to play ready golf. I personally hate slow golf (maybe unless I'm playing Pebble Beach or a course like that) so I'd rather play at a city course for a third the price and expect slow golf. I'd recommend trying the course on a week day morning and maybe it's not as bad.
Beautiful Course - hot day
Great looking course - right price
Good value...
Good test of golf skills on a well designed and picturesque layout. Must ride due to length between greens and tees is long. Excellent condition of the course. Will certainly play again.
AVR
Tee boxes were excellent, fairways were all good as well. Only one or two greens had dirt showing. Overall very well maintained course. The could use more water juggs around the course.
Poor Greens
I have played Avery Ranch over 20 times. Love the layout of the course (many dog leg lefts). I understand that we have had a bunch of rain over the past few months, but other golf courses have done a much much better job with course maintenance.
The last time I played here the greens had just been punched. Disappointed that I was not alerted of this before paying and playing, I came back out months later thinking they would be in impeccable shape. They were not even close. The greens were very bumpy, still had water on some greens, and every cup looked as if they had been punched months ago. Every lip was worn out.
I may not be coming back for awhile.
We deeply apologize for the experience you had while playing at Avery Ranch. We would love to get more information regarding your round, such as the day you played and your tee time. Please email lyzet.aguilar@averyranch.com to further discuss this issue. Thank you!
