Avery Ranch Golf Club
About
Avery Ranch Golf Club is a part of the Avery Ranch residential community, 20 minutes northwest of town, that was carved and blasted out of the rocky ranchlands along Brushy Creek. This historically significant area was once home to Indians and robbers, who were drawn to this beautiful setting thick with dense oaks, meandering creeks and abundant wildlife.
The golf course was designed by former Jack Nicklaus designer Andy Raugust, who literally had to use dynamite to blast rock out of the landscape for five holes. His design features two potential signature holes on each nine.
No. 7 doglegs left, and features two scenic carries -- one off the tee and another on the approach. The hole is rather short, providing the chance to be in good position for this most spectacular approach shot on the golf course. Staring at the multi-level green, you’ll notice the huge rock wall fronting the green, the large bunker to the right, and the native cacti to the rear.
Avery Ranch Golf Club's 13th is sure to be considered one of the best par 3s in the Austin area. The 161-yard par 3 features water on the right side, impressive, towering oaks in the back, and a unique ridge of rocks to the right of the green. The reasonable distance makes it a fun challenge, and the hole features a bail out area in case of a miss

Nice layout
Played in 5.5 hours starting at 2:15. Tournament went right before us. Pace of play was horrible with twosomes, threesomes, and foursomes staggered after the tournament.
perfect value
a wonderful course for the money! greens and fairways were perfect, only the bunkers are almost unplayable, but okay, there was a lot of rain!
course setup is really nice, i like the mixture of long and short holes!
the down point is the clubhouse, no people in there, closing very early (did not get a beer at 7.30pm...)
other than that this is a must play in austin!!!
Great shape, but....
Not sure what the problem was last Sunday. The course was in great shape but we waited on each hole and finally were stacked up 3 groups deep on #6. We paid for 18 holes but only played 9 because the pace was so slow.
PLAYER BEWARE!
On 6/5/16 a friend and I visited your Avery Ranch Golf Club, and were very disappointed by the overall level of service we experienced. Let me first preface this by saying this Sunday was abnormally busy for the course. It was a beautiful day after a week of rain. Unfortunately the value of this course is completely lost when you experience what I experienced.
I have never had to take another person’s cart to make a tee time despite my playing partner arriving 45 minutes prior to our tee time. They did not have enough carts for the tee times they booked by a long shot, and it created havoc. The starter was completely unprepared, overwhelmed, and unprofessional.
Once we were able to finally get on the course it took us over 3 hours to finish 9 holes! I have played golf in central Texas my whole life, and even Lions isn’t that slow on a beautiful Sunday. We did not stay for the second nine because honestly it wasn’t worth the frustration the management of the course provided despite the fantastic weather and paying for all 18.
It is my opinion that the overbooking of this course was done intentionally, and potential golfers should be aware of this before booking what they think is a good value weekend greens fee. I truly do hope this was a onetime anomaly, and we were just unlucky. Unfortunately I will not be back to find out despite really enjoying the course itself, and the affordable player packages you provide. It was that bad.
One of my favorite courses in the Austin area
I play a lot of courses in the area, but when it comes to taking clients out for a golf outing this is one of less than a handful of courses that I prefer to take them to.
Love this place
I am a very serious golfer who loves a course that will challenge me. I try and get out as much as I can but it works it self out to about once a week and if ion lucky twice here and there. The front nine at Avery Ranch is a lot of fun. There is so much character to each hole. I am always trying to battle the front nine knowing the back nine will give me a little relief from the tight fairways and perfect position play is required to play well. I love that 18 is not to easy from the golds. Long par 4 makes you work hard for a good finish. I had moved here to texas from buffalo NY, not knowing what to expect from Texas golf. I am so happy I live close to a great course .
Nice course with some challenges
The course has a nice layout and can be very challenging depending on wind direction. Well placed tee shots will help hold some of the sloping fairways and maximize rollout.
Good course but needs work
Good course but bunkers are unplayable. Most of them have too little sand. Golfers end up trying to hit out of the dirt. Same problem at Teravista. No accident that the same ownership group owns both courses?
Poor management
This would be 3rd time playing Avery Ranch. I play at least 3 days a week. I never write reviews but I just finished paying a green fee that is so overpriced for the condition of the course. The simplistic responsibilites of keeping the water cooler full to picking out the driving range balls that have no dimples to not seeing the cart girl for 13holes. The staff must have been directed my new managment not to care about customers. As I see more reviews on this Im happy to know that im not the only person that is concerned about the horrible new managment at Avery Ranch. We will never spend one more Dollar at this course.
Worst Course in North Austin!
This is by far one of the worst golf course to play up North. The green fees are so overpriced for the condition of the course. At $70 you can play Falconhead with a better course and by far better Staff. The range is so sandy with little to no grass. The range balls or horrible for the price point the course is trying to achieve. Every other ball is so bad you don't even want to hit them. The staff does not have ANY customer service skills nor do they understand player rettion. A happy golfer will always come back to friendly staff. Avery Ranch Golf Club new managment looks to be heading the wrong direction.
I have to agree with this review. The staff is horrible, course conditions and range are not good for the price point and they billed my credit card after properly cancelling a tee time. Much better choices in the area.
Never make your problem into your customers problem.
645am tee time today, and as you might expect, caught the ground crew. Patiently waited for them to complete their task on each hole. As a 2.2, played quickly, was stopped by the ranger on 13 tee, and harassed for playing too fast. Asked if they always harassed their customers, especially since I was waiting on the ground crew on each hole, they replied "when I am told to." After a few unsuccessful attempts to reach the pro shop, I let them know that I would play somewhere else from now on. As a CEO of a local company, I will take this opportunity to share one thought with course management. Don't care if you are running a bank or a golf course. Never make your problem into your customers problem. You wont keep them very long.
A solid test of golf.
The course was in good shape. You better bring your game when you play here. This course is not for golfer trying to find his or her game. I look forward to playing here again.
Home of the 5 hour round
We were members here for six years. Pace of play is one of the reasons we dropped membership. Just expect a five hour round any time you play. Other than that, everything else is great
Great Course convenient to Austin!
I played Avery Ranch while in Austin for a conference. Avery Ranch was extremely accomodating for me offering me a tee time at 6:45am (just as the sun came up) so that I could get out on the course and be back downtown by noon that day.
I paired this course with a round at Wolfdancer the previous day. Wolfdancer is a resort course out in the hills outside of Austin. Definitely worth a play (see my other review). Avery Ranch is built in a suburb outside of Austin and is what I would call a "neighborhood" course (even though I say a number of deer in the fairways during the early morning hours).
Avery I would classify as an "everyday" course, and I mean that in the best sense of the word. I would play this course everyday and enjoy it every time I play. There are tons of different ways to play each hole and you can use every club in your bag (unlike Wolfdancer which is very difficult and you have to be more selective and deliberate in your shotmaking). On the back I even played two balls, trying to use two different strategies on each hole. This is what I do at my home course, so it shows how much I liked the course, and how comfortable I felt playing it.
Challenging par 3's. A couple of gettable par 5's all make for a extremely FUN round! I would put this course right up there with The Quarry in San Antonio as my favorites I have played in Texas.
Nice layout and good conditions
First time playing Avery Ranch and it was everything and more than I had expected. Pace of play was great and I was paired up with very nice people. Conditions were what I was expecting from a course of this caliber. Fairways were tight, traps were groomed well and the green were moderately fast. Driving range and practice greens were kept up nicely and placed within walking distance of the 1st tee. The starter was pleasant and called us to our tee time on time. No complaints at all and will look forward to playing here in the future.
Bang for your buck
Living in Austin, I love Avery Ranch. Best bang for your buck course. Green fee's are under $90 and the course is always in excellent condition. You can usually find a good deal on Golf Now as well if you are looking to play for cheaper.
Front 9: Tough with scenic driving holes
Back 9: 3 par 3's, 3 par 4's and 3 par 5's. A lot of fun and scoreable
Great round
Course is in good shape. Weather was perfect after frost delay. Staff is very friendly.
Poor Experience
We won't be back to Avery, and it's too bad b/c it's one of the closer courses to my house. Arrived 40 minutes before my round to warm up, but it took over 20 minutes to get a drink from the bar, and it wasn't even that busy. The "bartender" clearly had no clue what she was doing, and there wasn't any food ready to go either. No breakfast tacos??? At the end of the front 9, the marshall told us we needed to pick up the pace, even though there was nobody behind us. Our foursome played the front 9 in 2 hours... We waited to tee off upon arriving at the #10 tee. While the greens were in good condition, the bunkers had beach sand and large rocks in them. We didn't see a cart girl until the back 9, and she didn't have anything except chips to eat. Carts had no gps either. For $90, there are so many other better places to go in Austin that have their act together. It had been 5 years since I played Avery. We gave them another shot b/c they were one of the only courses with any openings when we booked on Wed. Now I know why they had openings... this place is terrible. In the words of George W., "Fool me can't get fooled again." Adios, Avery Ranch.
Avery Ranch golf outing
Pro shop dude was not friendly at all. Driving range balls were worn out and $7 for small bucket is nuts. Lay out is fine but fairways very tight. Pace of play was terrible. Marshal kept apologizing but some groups were really bogging down the pace. Star Ranch better conditioned and better value overall.
Oh this is by design, their intention is to get your money and the you know what with you once you are on the course. Upscale courses do not smash tee times 7.5 minutes apart I have played courses that are way more upscale and I will be taking the drive to those courses from now on. 5 1/2 hours is a good pace on sat or sun, had the nerve to try and sell me a private membership as well dont think so!!!!
