Avery Ranch Golf Club
About
Avery Ranch Golf Club is a part of the Avery Ranch residential community, 20 minutes northwest of town, that was carved and blasted out of the rocky ranchlands along Brushy Creek. This historically significant area was once home to Indians and robbers, who were drawn to this beautiful setting thick with dense oaks, meandering creeks and abundant wildlife.
The golf course was designed by former Jack Nicklaus designer Andy Raugust, who literally had to use dynamite to blast rock out of the landscape for five holes. His design features two potential signature holes on each nine.
No. 7 doglegs left, and features two scenic carries -- one off the tee and another on the approach. The hole is rather short, providing the chance to be in good position for this most spectacular approach shot on the golf course. Staring at the multi-level green, you’ll notice the huge rock wall fronting the green, the large bunker to the right, and the native cacti to the rear.
Avery Ranch Golf Club's 13th is sure to be considered one of the best par 3s in the Austin area. The 161-yard par 3 features water on the right side, impressive, towering oaks in the back, and a unique ridge of rocks to the right of the green. The reasonable distance makes it a fun challenge, and the hole features a bail out area in case of a miss

Wow
Amazing course !! A must play !!! Beautiful views. Awesome water holes. Can't wait to play again soon
very good course
The course has a variety of very challenging holes . It is in very good shape.
Terrible Customer Service
No Scorecards given to us. We were told they were out even though I saw the pro shop staff printing and cutting them when we arrived. They did not tell us when we checked in that they were out of scorecards, we did not find out until we got to the starter. We then got pushed out 10 minutes early, and had a threesome and single behind us. The staff is terrible. The course is nice but there are lots of nice courses for that price and cheaper, I will not be going back to Avery Ranch.
First Time Player
I have heard good things about this course for years and finally had a chance to play. Very good condition and moderately difficult layout; I played from the Blue tees - about 6200 yards. My wife played ladies' tees, which were a little challenging for her. Playing companions were members and advised us on where to hit drives - very helpful. Greens were large and reasonably fast. They read easily and true - what I thought I saw was what I got. Only one or two forced carries. They focus on pace of play as 4 1/2 hours but for some reason we took nearly 5. Some slowdown due to group ahead but not painful. Nice facilities and benefits, including ice at two rest stops. Would definitely play again.
Really Nice Course
First time playing here. You definitely want to find the fairway of the tee if you plan on playing the Gold or Black tees. If not, makes for a long day. The greens were fabulous. Fairly fast, and pretty smooth and true. Almost too quick a pace of play if you've never played the course before. But I still preferred that over creeping around the course. Will definitely play here again.
Great Course and a Good Time!
The course is mature and provides a lot of challenge. It's laid out extremely well, with many holes requiring good placement in order to make the next shot work. Some holes you can go a little left or right and be OK. Some... not so much.
There's water, ravines, steep embankments with heavy brush -- and it's fairly long. Not the best course for the absolute beginner, but a good challenge for someone who has golfed a little.
Given the dry conditions in the area the course was in remarkable shape. Kudos to their grounds team! Could use a little work on the traps, though.
Must play course.
This is a very well kept course, excellent fairways and greens. It plays well and pace is great.
Great course
Avery is a great course to play that's greens and fairways are green year round. The greens keeper whoever he/she is does a very good job keeping everything looking great with the triple digit temps. The only thing I wish this course had was unlimited practice balls with you purchase of a round.... So to get around that I practice at a facility before going here....
Great Course
Good greens . Decently challenging and good pace of play. Drinking water availability on a 104 degree day can be slightly more frequent and the barrels full.
Neighborhood Play
The price was the main reason we chose to play there. It also helped that the course is 10 minutes from our house.
Short but tricky
Challenging course. Scenic holes. Played from the blues. Fairway are open but hazards are very well placed. Average drives of 240 to 260 in middle will find out that the fairway bottlenecks or have bunkers that are strategically placed. Boogie golfer and i shot a 98. I get off the tee box easily with straight drives but here i hit hazards often or trickled out of bounds. Some holes are 300 yard par 4s but no easy shot at the greens. Nice elevations.
Ok course
The greens were good but the sand trap were terrible. They were hard packed, wet and you were lucky if there was an 1" of sand in the traps.
Surprise Surprise on the First Green
I arrived for my round about 1.5 hours early and was looking to hit some balls and chip / putt. The range was pretty tight as they kept moving people tighter to make room for a clinic... This has nothing to do with the course, but when I went to get my driver off the cart some guy jacked my range balls. I've actually never had that happen before. He seemed like a regular so if this is indicative of the people that are here it is disheartening. Moving on...
The practice greens were in great shape, there was just a little but of diseased or dead grass around the edges but overall pretty good. Which leads to the surprise on the first green which I'll get to in a bit...
I had lunch before my round and I will say the burger and fries along with the service were amazing. The young lady working behind the bar was great, friendly and accommodating.
I was paired up with a fellow and we went off a little early as a twosome which was a great deal. When we got up to the first green we found a punched and sanded green which was very unfortunate that we were not made aware of. The pro shop, the starter any one could've mentioned it. As frustrating as that was we moved on.
Pace of play was a bit slow once we caught up to the group in front of us, we had plenty of time to look for the balls I hit into the weeds.
All of the water coolers we crossed where empty which was rather frustrating for a midday round at 100 degrees.
When the greens are in good shape this is a solid course. They need to get some additional help if they can't keep fresh water on the course. Hopefully the new ownership will make this equal to Teravista which is a completely different experience on the course. The two pro shop guys at Teravista hopefully will train the folks at Avery...
As long as you manage expectations going in that you are likely going to a $60/round course as it sits right now, you will be ok.
Opportunity Marshall
Played this course quite a bit last year and I have always loved it as its right down the road from where I live. Yesterday was the first time I played there this year and I was amazingly disappointed with the experience. Started off with getting there 30 mins early to hit a warm up bucket. So I got on the range with the two other guys I was with. None of us had hit 1/2 of our bucket when the guy in the starter house came yelling on the range that our group was late. So we jumped into our carts and hauled over to hole ten to start. Only to have 2 foursomes and a twosome in front of us... So we waited 28 minutes. Right as its about to clear up for us to hit. The Marshel drives up, I was trying to get the lay of the land and asked, "how busy is it up ahead?" He responded that your to tee off so it's not bad. I replied that we had been waiting for 30 mins, he shot back "I know that's not true, I know you have not been waiting 30 mins) and then drives off. The other guys in my group where like wow that guy just called you a lier... So we play on. Greats not in good shape(no surprise they tell you though) fairways are pretty good. Rough is the worst I have ever seen it. Anyways this Marshel proceeds to pass us at least 15 - 20 times. Then he pulls up to our carts and starts yelling at us from our carts(we are putting) that he is going to take one of the cards that they put on each of our carts so I am so upset from when he called me a lier that I don't even finish putting pick up my ball and walk over to see what's up. I ask why he needs the card, are they out of cards? He says no that he does not want us to get in trouble for playing slow(remember we started 30+ mins behind) and said that our times where different on the cards. I was like our times are the same and he was like no there different and I said no they are the same and I grabbed the one he took and had sitting on the cart set next to him and then I grabbed the one mounted on our other cart and showed him that they both showed 1:21pm.. Not a lot he could say so he just was mumbling, and then he was like what's the big deal? I responded that he called me a lirer on the first whole and he was like well I was kidding about the wait but I knew it hadn't been 30 minutes , and I said your right 28 mins was the exact time. Then he drove off without saying another thing. Then he passed by at least 15 - 20 more times. Always watching us. We where not playing slow since we where always hitting into the foursome in front of us. So it's not like we where playing slow. The round did take forever though as it took the FULL 4 1/2 hours to play. In my years of playing golf I have never seen a Marshel act this way, or seen a Marshel as much as this guy. IF I play here again and he is there I will turn around and leave right away. All the Marshels I have ever seen there where great in the past. Not this guy... He single handed will make me never play there again. And it's really sad since I live so close to it.
Great Course
Worth the money. Pace of play was very quick. Enjoyed it. Will do again.
First time player
My wife and I played the course for the first time. Fairways were in excellent condition although some low wet spots due to leaking irrigation valves made it a little wet. Bunkers were very firm and some wet. Greens had just been punched and sanded to putting was the expected challenge under the conditions. Some too long tee carries for my wife from the reds.I really liked the layout. Pace of play was 4.5 hours. Plan to play this course again after the greens heal.
I really enjoy playing Avery Ranch
I really like Avery Ranch. The fairways were excellent. I never had to even think about moving my ball when it was on the fairway. The greens had just been sanded, but I knew that before playing. The staff was great and very friendly. I played from the gold tees (6500 yards) and it was a very fair challenge. There are some holes that you can score on and some holes that can challenge your ball striking ability. Enjoy!
Wonderful experience!
Great golf course! Very well maintained! Great layout! Staff was exceptionally friendly! Wonderful experience!
A slow day at Avery
I was in town for a wedding, and I wanted to get one last round in with a friend. 5 and a half hours later we were able to complete 18 holes of golf. The course was not in great shape. The fairways were really shaggy. The greens were in horrible shape for the price they were charging. The bunkers were filled with rocks. We were partnered up with another single who quit after 9 holes because of the pace of play. There was 4 groups all day on holes. Marshal would ride around, but never really got groups to pick up the pace. They had a single playing infront of us( he ended up pairing up in our group) who actually works at the course. He said they had over 200 players schedule for tee times today. With that being said, it was a shame the starter was failing to do his job.
The track itself was fun. The back nine has 3 par 5s and 3 par 3s.
