Avery Ranch Golf Club

Pro shop dude was not friendly at all. Driving range balls were worn out and $7 for small bucket is nuts. Lay out is fine but fairways very tight. Pace of play was terrible. Marshal kept apologizing but some groups were really bogging down the pace. Star Ranch better conditioned and better value overall.

Took three hours to complete front nine, no site of a marshal. By 4:15 our group sat at the 12 tee box for 15 minutes, knowing we would not complete the round called it quits.

Had not been to Avery since May 16 because the staff is rude and something always goes wrong. Decided to run by at lunch today and hit a bucket and try out my new mizuno irons. Went to get a bucket, counter guy acted like I disturbed him tossed the slip with the code said nothing. Got the balls and was shocked they had 1/2 of em the old Wilson yellow, hardly any dimples. Dumped the bucket out and absolutely no grass on this poor excuse for a range. Sandy mud!! Hit 3 balls and left. This place has no idea how to give customer service or put a decent product out. We have a Wednesday league starting up in March and even though Avery is close rest assured it'll go somewhere else. Horrible place

This was my 5th time at Avery Ranch, so I am beginning to know the layout better. This is a beautiful course in a hilly area of NW Austin with some holes bordering on Brushy Creek. There are many elevation changes and sloping lies. Fairways are fairly wide and will hold a good drive, but several do have a slope to one side that you must take into account in your aim. Trees line the fairways to challenge the second shot if your drive strays, and houses line many holes beyond the line of trees. The greens are large with significant contours, very smooth and nice. The course has 5 sets of tees that help with the forced carries on quite a few holes. Most people ride carts on this course, although they do allow walking (there is one long green-tee walk when you cross under Parmer Lane in each direction). Practice facility is very good, ample parking, gas powered carts, nice bar and grille, drinks cart. Only amenity missing that might be expected at this level is a GPS display in carts, so bring your phone GPS app or buy one of their great $3 course books. This course has been voted the best upscale course in Austin several times, and I would agree on that. They also have a great Player's Club that gets you one free round a month plus unlimited use of the driving range for little more than the cost of a weekend round of golf. One of my favorites.

Great course. I joined a group playing the white tees so it was a banner day coming in at 78. I look forward to trying it again a little further back.

Beautiful course layed out in a great neighborhood. This course is somewhat challenging and very well layed out.

Very nice facility and friendly staff. The only negative is one hole (tee boxes and fairway) is currently shut down making a par four into a par 3.

booked this on November 4, played nov 8. Wasn't told during booking tee time or when checking in that the course was virtually undr water. Three holes were shortened an one closed plus a tournament going on. Played the front nine in three hours, lost six balls in flooded bunkers.

Wrote a letter to Mr. Brown who is noted as the general manager, and finally got a response that was very dismissive. From other reviews you can tell they had no intention of telling us of the problems before taking our $85 per person.

Not a way to run any organization - though it seems like a great layout we won't be back simply because of management actions!!

Good value from Golfnow at $44 for the round, although half of #9 is under water so it has been changed into a 150 yard par 3. There is also a par 3 on the back that is completely closed. I was a bit surprised that neither the golfnow system nor the check in staff, nor the starter mentioned anything about these areas. Greens are in great shape, very soft and smooth. Fairways are a bit soggy but in good shape. This is a great course but would be worth calling ahead to see if the holes have been re-opened, especially if you are coming in from out of town, or paying more than $44. Lots of deer on the course which is interesting. Many of the bunkers had significant standing water and were unplayable.

Pace of play was terrible. It was a 5 hour round on a week day afternoon. On several holes there were two groups on the hole and 3 groups waiting on the tee. After 4 holes I called the clubhouse & they said they would send a marshall, who never showed up. We saw the marshall 6 holes (and 1.5 hours) later, and he was clueless. Clubhouse personnel & starter were indifferent to the problem, and not especially congenial in general. The course was in great shape. Too bad the pace of play wasn't managed properly.

Great challenge, expecially when you play from the tips

Would have been nice to have been informed that there was a tournament taking place that day. Mentioned this to the pro shop and they insisted it would still play to no more than 4 1/2 hours, played 5 1/2.

The course has a variety of very challenging holes . It is in very good shape.

No Scorecards given to us. We were told they were out even though I saw the pro shop staff printing and cutting them when we arrived. They did not tell us when we checked in that they were out of scorecards, we did not find out until we got to the starter. We then got pushed out 10 minutes early, and had a threesome and single behind us. The staff is terrible. The course is nice but there are lots of nice courses for that price and cheaper, I will not be going back to Avery Ranch.

I have heard good things about this course for years and finally had a chance to play. Very good condition and moderately difficult layout; I played from the Blue tees - about 6200 yards. My wife played ladies' tees, which were a little challenging for her. Playing companions were members and advised us on where to hit drives - very helpful. Greens were large and reasonably fast. They read easily and true - what I thought I saw was what I got. Only one or two forced carries. They focus on pace of play as 4 1/2 hours but for some reason we took nearly 5. Some slowdown due to group ahead but not painful. Nice facilities and benefits, including ice at two rest stops. Would definitely play again.

First time playing here. You definitely want to find the fairway of the tee if you plan on playing the Gold or Black tees. If not, makes for a long day. The greens were fabulous. Fairly fast, and pretty smooth and true. Almost too quick a pace of play if you've never played the course before. But I still preferred that over creeping around the course. Will definitely play here again.

The course is mature and provides a lot of challenge. It's laid out extremely well, with many holes requiring good placement in order to make the next shot work. Some holes you can go a little left or right and be OK. Some... not so much.

There's water, ravines, steep embankments with heavy brush -- and it's fairly long. Not the best course for the absolute beginner, but a good challenge for someone who has golfed a little.

Given the dry conditions in the area the course was in remarkable shape. Kudos to their grounds team! Could use a little work on the traps, though.

This is a very well kept course, excellent fairways and greens. It plays well and pace is great.
